The Yinchuan Evening News (银川晚报, Yinchuan Wanbao) is a Chinese-language evening newspaper published in Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China. It is produced by the Yinchuan Daily media group alongside the group's flagship title, the Yinchuan Daily, the organ of the Yinchuan Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Where the morning party paper speaks first to officials and institutions, the Evening News is the group's city-life title: an evening paper written for the capital's general readers, covering municipal news, livelihood and consumer stories, culture and sport.
Evening newspapers occupy a distinctive niche in Chinese journalism. From the 1980s onward, almost every large and medium-sized Chinese city developed an evening title alongside its party daily — a paper timed for readers finishing work, written in a livelier register, and weighted toward the city news, services and human stories that the morning organ handled more formally. The Yinchuan Evening News is Ningxia's capital-city example of the genre. Academic listings of China's local mainstream press include it among the country's principal local newspapers, and local press listings class it, with the Yinchuan Daily, as one of Yinchuan's two municipal-level newspapers.
The Evening News belongs to the Yinchuan Daily media group, the municipal press organisation built around the CCP Yinchuan Municipal Committee's organ. The pairing is a standard arrangement in Chinese municipal media: the party daily carries the committee's authoritative voice, while the evening title is allowed a more commercial and reader-facing character, selling on newsstands and subscriptions to households across the capital. The two papers draw on the same group's reporting resources and distribution network, and the group's journalists work across its titles and its converged news operation — bylines from the Yinchuan news media group appear, for example, on the group's audio and digital city features such as its "Yinchuan Night Reading" programme.
True to its brief as the capital's evening title, the paper covers municipal news through the lens of daily life: livelihood questions such as prices, housing, heating, transport and public services; consumer stories and rights protection; community and neighbourhood reporting from Yinchuan's districts; and culture and sport, from the city's theatres and exhibitions to its football and fitness life. Official notices and discipline-inspection circulars from the municipal authorities are also carried and cited under the paper's name, reflecting its status as a recognised mainstream outlet within the municipal media system, but its centre of gravity is the city as its residents experience it.
Yinchuan is a prefecture-level city of about 6,946 square kilometres on the Yellow River plain, with 2,859,074 residents at the 2020 census and roughly 2.91 million by the end of 2024. Sheltered by the Helan Mountains to the west, it is an irrigated oasis city in arid northwest China — its name means "silver river" — and the political, economic and cultural centre of Ningxia. The Evening News's city pages follow the life that geography produces: a capital of broad streets and lakes, of wine production along the Helan foothills, of energy and light industry, and of a large Hui Muslim community whose mosques, markets and food culture give the city a character unlike any other Chinese capital.
The capital's past gives its evening paper rich feature material. Yinchuan was the imperial capital of the Tangut-led Western Xia kingdom from 1038 to 1227, and the Western Xia imperial tombs, the Helan Mountain rock paintings, the Haibao Pagoda and the early Palaeolithic site at Shuidonggou all lie within its territory. The city also hosts the biennial China–Arab States Expo. An evening paper lives on such stories: heritage features, exhibition and festival coverage, and reporting on how a small northwestern capital presents its Western Xia and Hui heritage to visitors from across China and the Arab world.
The defining work of a Chinese evening paper is livelihood journalism — the patient reporting of the services and costs that shape ordinary life. In Yinchuan that means winter heating in a cold northern city, water and irrigation in a dry region, school places and hospital queues, bus routes and roadworks, market prices and food safety. The Yinchuan Evening News performs this function for the capital's households, translating municipal policy into its practical consequences for readers and carrying residents' concerns back into print. Its consumer and community coverage is the part of the municipal group's output that general readers most directly use.
Like other licensed Chinese newspapers, the Evening News carries the formal small print of city life. As a municipal-level paper with an official publication number, it accepts legally recognised announcements — lost-document declarations, corporate notices and similar statutory advertisements — a service Chinese residents and businesses routinely need when replacing documents or registering changes. Local listings place its announcement rates and recognition at the municipal tier, alongside the Yinchuan Daily and below the region-wide provincial papers, a hierarchy that reflects its city-focused circulation.
An evening paper also chronicles how its city spends its free time, and Yinchuan offers distinctive material. The Helan foothills wine country west of the city has made Ningxia a fixture of China's wine calendar, and international wine events in the capital bring growers, judges and tourists whose visits fill the paper's culture and business pages. Around them runs the ordinary round of city leisure: performances and exhibitions, the Shahu Lake and desert-edge excursions that are the region's weekend escapes, night markets and halal food streets, and the festivals of the Hui community. In a city where winter is long and cold and spring can bring dust from the deserts beyond the Helan range, the paper's weather, heating and travel service journalism is part of the same leisure-and-livelihood brief.
The Yinchuan Evening News has lived through the same transformation as every Chinese evening paper: the migration of readers to mobile news, and the reorganisation of municipal press groups into converged media operations in which a single newsroom feeds print, web, social and audio products. The group's "Yinchuan Night Reading" audio feature — a nightly voiced reading produced by the municipal news media group's reporters and editors — is an example of the form that adaptation takes in Yinchuan: the evening paper's traditional promise, a companionable digest at the end of the working day, rebuilt for the phone. The print title continues within that converged structure as the group's established city-life brand.
The paper's readers are the capital's households: commuters, families, small businesses and retirees across Xingqing, Xixia and Jinfeng districts and the city's counties. Ningxia's media market is one of China's smallest — the province-level tier is occupied by the Ningxia Daily group and its commercial Xin Xiaoxi Bao — so the Yinchuan Evening News competes at the municipal tier chiefly on closeness to city life. Within the Yinchuan Daily media group it is the popular face of the municipal press: the title through which the party group's journalism reaches readers who would never subscribe to an official organ, and the everyday chronicle of the capital's streets, markets and neighbourhoods.
