About Guizhou Business Daily

Guizhou Business Daily

Guizhou Business Daily (贵州商报, Guizhou Shangbao) is a Chinese-language business newspaper published in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province in southwest China. It belongs to the Guizhou Daily newspaper group — the provincial press group whose titles also include the Guizhou Daily, the provincial party committee's organ and the province's largest newspaper by readership, and the Guizhou Metropolitan Daily. Within that stable, the Business Daily is the group's commercial-economy title: a paper for business readers that covers markets, companies, property, consumption and investment in Guizhou, complementing the group's party and metropolitan papers.

Publisher and group

The Guizhou Daily group is one of China's substantial provincial press organisations. Its flagship, the Guizhou Daily, was launched on 28 November 1949 under the name Xinqian Daily and renamed to its present title on 1 January 1957; it is the official newspaper of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and, after decades of development, the most widely circulated and influential comprehensive party newspaper in the province. Around that flagship, the group built a portfolio of subsidiary titles for distinct readerships — among them the Guizhou Metropolitan Daily for city readers, the Guizhou Business Daily for the business community, and other specialised publications — a structure the group later carried into a converged all-media operation encompassing newspapers, periodicals, websites and mobile clients. In March 2018 the Guizhou Daily won a place in the Third National Top 100 Newspapers in China, a marker of the standing of the group to which the Business Daily belongs.

The business paper's brief

The Guizhou Business Daily exists to serve readers who follow Guizhou's economy as participants: company managers and entrepreneurs, investors, property buyers and sellers, retailers and consumers with money at stake. Its coverage, as befits a commercial-economy title, centres on markets and prices, the fortunes of Guizhou companies large and small, the property market of Guiyang and the province's other cities, consumption trends, and investment conditions and opportunities in the province. Where the party daily reports economic policy as governance, the Business Daily reports it as business environment — what a new rule, road, industrial park or credit policy means for firms and households operating in Guizhou's markets.

Guizhou's economic story

The paper has had a remarkable economy to chronicle. Long one of China's poorest and most mountainous provinces, Guizhou became in the 2010s one of the country's faster-growing inland provinces, building expressways and bridges across its karst terrain at extraordinary pace and positioning its capital, Guiyang, as a centre of the big-data industry. The Guizhou Daily group's own studies of the period describe the provincial push to build an "innovation-centred city led by big data", and the province's later industrial stories — from matcha production and tyres to battery materials — have continued to draw national attention. For the Business Daily's readers, that growth story is the paper's raw material: new industrial parks and data centres, incoming investment, expanding consumer markets, and the opportunities and risks of doing business in a province catching up with coastal China.

Guiyang, the home market

Published in Guiyang, the paper's centre of gravity is the provincial capital — Guizhou's political, financial and commercial hub, a city built in a basin among the hills of the province's centre. Guiyang concentrates the province's banks, company headquarters, shopping districts and property development, and it is where the Business Daily's core readership of executives, professionals and investors is thickest. From that base the paper addresses business readers in Guizhou's other cities — Zunyi, Anshun, Bijie, Tongren and the prefectural capitals — covering a province-wide commercial community that the party daily reaches as citizens but the Business Daily reaches as economic actors.

Property, markets and consumption

Three beats define a Chinese business paper's daily usefulness, and all three are prominent in the Guizhou title's remit. Property coverage tracks housing prices, new developments and land sales in Guiyang's expanding districts and the province's growing cities — information its readers buy and sell by. Market coverage follows Guizhou's distinctive industries, from its famous baijiu sector around Maotai to tea, tobacco, mining and the newer data and manufacturing industries. Consumption coverage — retail, vehicles, tourism and services — maps the spending power of a province whose urban middle class has grown rapidly with its economy. Together these beats make the paper a practical instrument for its readers as well as a chronicle of the provincial economy.

Signature industries: baijiu and beyond

No Guizhou business beat is more distinctive than baijiu, the sorghum spirit whose heartland is the Chishui River valley around Maotai town in Renhuai, under Zunyi. The industry's weight in the provincial economy — and its evolution from production and sales toward tourism and lifestyle experiences, formalised in a provincial action plan issued in June 2026 — makes it a standing subject for the province's business press. Reporting in the valley in 2026 counted 27 star-rated liquor chateaux and 14 liquor-tourism scenic areas in Zunyi, and more than ten million visits to Renhuai in the first ten months of 2025. Around baijiu sit the province's other signature sectors — tea, tobacco, coal and phosphates, and the newer industries that have drawn national attention, from the world's matcha production concentrated in Jiangkou County to tyre manufacture and lithium-battery materials in Tongren — each of them a regular subject for a paper whose readers invest in, supply and work for Guizhou companies.

Serving enterprises and investors

A provincial business paper also performs a connective function. Its pages carry the announcements, results and plans through which Guizhou's companies present themselves to partners and regulators; its reporting on provincial policy — industrial support programmes, infrastructure openings, investment-promotion campaigns — is read by firms deciding where to place factories and money; and its market coverage gives outside investors a local window on an economy whose speed of change can outrun national reporting. In a province that spent decades as one of China's least accessible, that window has practical value: the Business Daily is part of the information infrastructure through which Guizhou's catch-up growth has been financed and staffed.

Convergence and the group's all-media turn

The Business Daily publishes today within the group's converged structure. In early 2017 the Guizhou Daily group reformed its organisation to promote media convergence, establishing a Guizhou Daily All-Media Editorial Department with an all-media command and dispatch centre, an all-media interview centre, a newspaper editing and publishing centre and a new-media operations centre; on 1 January 2017 it launched a revamped flagship with restructured theory pages and a prominent commentary section. The group developed WeChat and Weibo accounts and digital brands across its titles. For a subsidiary business paper, convergence means its reporting now lives as much in the group's digital channels as on its own printed pages, reaching Guizhou's business readers on the phones where they increasingly follow markets.

Position among Guizhou's newspapers

Guizhou's press is headed by the provincial party organ, served at the popular level by metropolitan titles, and anchored in each prefecture by a local party paper. The Guizhou Business Daily occupies the specialist economic tier of that system at provincial level: the Guizhou Daily group's designated voice on commerce, published for the province's business community from its capital. Its value to that community — and its claim on a place in any directory of Chinese newspapers — is as the standing business chronicle of one of China's most dramatically changing provincial economies.
