About Jiamusi News Net

Jiamusi News Net

Jiamusi News Net is the official online news portal serving Jiamusi, a prefecture-level city in eastern Heilongjiang Province, China. Published in Chinese, it carries local government, economy, society, livelihood and culture news for Jiamusi and its subordinate districts, counties and county-level cities, and it is the city's dedicated local news website, produced by Jiamusi's converged media centre, the merged municipal newspaper and broadcasting group. It is distinct from the print Jiamusi Daily newspaper, whose reporting it carries alongside online-first local coverage and local government service information.

Jiamusi is China's eastern gateway: the city of the three rivers, where the Songhua, the Heilongjiang — the Amur — and the Ussuri meet on the Sanjiang Plain, and the prefecture that contains the easternmost point of China, where the country's day begins. Its portal serves a great agricultural frontier — one of the world's three great black-soil plains — that is also a border-trade corridor facing the Russian Far East, and its news runs from grain tonnage and wetland cranes to customs clearances at Fuyuan.

The portal and its place in Jiamusi media

Jiamusi News Net is the web flagship of the city's converged media centre, the merged municipal newspaper and broadcasting organisation. It publishes the newsroom's reporting continuously online, with official announcements and public-service information, as Jiamusi's dedicated local news website and the standing digital record of the prefecture's affairs.

The portal is distinct from Jiamusi Daily, the centre's print newspaper, whose reporting it carries and extends. A prefecture of Jiamusi's scale — over thirty thousand square kilometres of plain, river and border — cannot be served by a daily edition alone, and the website's district, county and farm-belt news streams, together with its service pages, are how municipal information reaches reclamation-area towns and border counties between editions. It operates as a licensed internet news information service under the framework administered by the Cyberspace Administration of China, staffed by local journalists whose beat is the Sanjiang Plain.

The plain of the three rivers

Jiamusi lies along the middle and lower reaches of the Songhua River in eastern Heilongjiang, covering some 32,460 square kilometres and recording a population of 2,552,097 at the 2010 census. It faces Russia's Khabarovsk Krai across the Ussuri and the Amur, and its territory includes Fuyuan, the easternmost county-level city in China, at the confluence of the Amur and the Ussuri — the place promoted, accurately, as the first in China to meet the sunrise.

The Sanjiang Plain — the plain of the three rivers — was formed by the alluvium of the Songhua, Amur and Ussuri, and it is one of the three remaining great black-soil plains on earth. Its wetlands, of which more than a million hectares survive in marsh and reserve, hold hundreds of vertebrate and plant species and serve the East Asian flyways. The prefecture's terrain is low and flat in the northeast, rising to low mountains in the south and west, under a monsoon-influenced continental climate of long, bitter, dry winters and warm, humid summers. For the news net, this is a landscape brief: rivers, wetlands, black soil and a hard border, all in one prefecture.

From bridle road to Sanjiang capital

Historical records remember the site of Jiamusi as a staging post — its Manchu name, Giyamusi, means a station or inn — on the route along the Songhua toward the Heilongjiang estuary, in country inhabited in early times by the Sushen, ancestors of the Manchu peoples. Harsh climate and a short growing season kept the region largely unsettled until the late Qing, when the court opened Manchuria to farming against Russian pressure. A trading post called Dongxingzhen grew from 1886; in 1910 the area became the seat of Huachuan county administration, though floods later moved the county seat north to Heli.

The modern city is a twentieth-century creation. Under the Japanese occupation, Jiamusi became an administrative centre of Manchukuo and the capital of its Sanjiang province, and a major military base; the city was formally established in 1937, and railways to Suihua and Harbin and to Mudanjiang, completed in 1937–38 and after, made it the distribution centre for the agricultural northeast of Manchuria. After 1949 it grew further as the transport, communications and service centre of the Sanjiang region — the role, enlarged, that it still holds, and that its portal documents.

The granary: black soil agriculture

Agriculture is Jiamusi's commanding industry. The prefecture is a core production zone of the Sanjiang Plain's state-farm and county farm systems, with annual grain output reported in the billions of kilograms — rice the largest single share — alongside soybeans and maize grown on the black soil at a scale that makes the harvest a national statistic. The portal's agriculture coverage is correspondingly heavyweight: spring planting and irrigation, summer flood and drought watch on the three rivers, mechanisation, the great autumn harvest, grain procurement and the economics of the farm towns.

With production comes the conservation argument that now runs through all black-soil reporting: protecting the soil layer, returning straw, managing the wetlands that farming reclaimed, and balancing output against the plain's ecology. The Sanjiang wetlands and their reserves — habitat for cranes, storks and hundreds of other species — give the portal an environmental beat of national significance, reported from inside the granary itself.

River ports and the Russian trade

Jiamusi has long been a transit port and distribution centre, the largest harbour city on the lower Songhua, with river navigation in the ice-free months linking it upstream to Harbin and down the Amur system toward Khabarovsk. Its Fuyuan port, at the meeting of the Amur and Ussuri, is the outlet through which the waterways of the prefecture reach the lower river and, seasonally, the sea routes of the Russian Far East.

Border trade is the second economy the portal reports: customs and port operations at Fuyuan and Tongjiang, cross-border tourism, Russian-market commerce, and the infrastructure — bridges, ports and rail — by which the Chinese northeast trades with the Russian Far East. In a prefecture that contains China's easternmost point, foreign trade is not an abstraction; it is the traffic on the river, and it fills the economy pages alongside the grain figures.

Government, society and livelihood coverage

The portal's daily core is municipal government and livelihood reporting across the urban districts, counties and county-level cities and the farm-belt towns: policy and budgets, river and flood management, heating through one of China's coldest winters, schools, hospitals and social services, and the administration of a border prefecture, including the affairs of its Hezhen, Korean, Manchu and other minority communities — the Hezhen fishing culture of the lower rivers is one of the prefecture's signature heritages.

Culture coverage follows the wetlands and the rivers: the Sanjiang marshlands, winter fishing and ice tourism, the eastern-pole sunrise at Fuyuan that draws travellers to be first in China to see the New Year sun, and the university city life around Jiamusi University. Society pages carry the farm towns and border ports through their seasons — planting, navigation, harvest, freeze-up — in a rhythm set by latitude.

Reading Jiamusi through its portal

For outside readers, Jiamusi News Net is a window on China's agricultural frontier at its most productive and most easterly. National coverage notices the sunrise point and the grain totals; the portal records the system behind them — the farm administrations, the river ports, the wetland reserves, the border posts — as the everyday news of the 2.5 million people who run it. It is the fullest continuous account available of life where the three rivers meet.

Why Jiamusi News Net matters

Jiamusi News Net matters as the official online voice of the gateway prefecture of the Sanjiang Plain — China's easternmost city region, a granary on black soil and a trading post facing Russia across two great rivers. It is the primary local news source for Jiamusi's residents and the web flagship of its converged media centre, and it stands in the WorldNM directory as the online news entry for Jiamusi, Heilongjiang: the daily record of the city where China's day begins.
