About Mechanical Science and Technology

Mechanical Science and Technology

Mechanical Science and Technology, known in Chinese as Jixie Kexue yu Jishu, is a Chinese-language mechanical engineering journal published in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, by Northwestern Polytechnical University. It carries ISSN 1003-8728 and has been published since 1981. In its current series its English rendering is given more fully as Mechanical Science and Technology for Aerospace Engineering, a name that signals the character of its host institution. Northwestern Polytechnical University — NPU — is listed on its own research pages as the publisher of the journal, alongside the Journal of Northwestern Polytechnical University. The journal publishes research in mechanical design, dynamics, manufacturing and mechatronics, and it is a Chinese core journal. Its Xi'an university base and its aerospace colouring distinguish it from the Wuhan-published China Mechanical Engineering and from the other general mechanical titles in Chinese publishing.

A necessary warning about a similar Korean title

The English name of this journal is easily confused with a completely different publication, and the distinction should be made at the outset. The Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology published in South Korea carries print ISSN 1738-494X and online ISSN 1976-3824, is the journal of the Korean mechanical engineering community, and is published internationally in English. It has no connection with the Xi'an title. The Chinese journal described here is Jixie Kexue yu Jishu, ISSN 1003-8728, published by Northwestern Polytechnical University since 1981 and written primarily in Chinese for China's mechanical engineering community. Whenever a citation, catalogue record or database entry gives only the English words Mechanical Science and Technology, the ISSN is the reliable discriminator: 1003-8728 identifies the Xi'an journal, while 1738-494X identifies the Korean one. Librarians and researchers searching for either title should search by ISSN as well as by name to avoid retrieving the wrong journal's articles.

Northwestern Polytechnical University: the host institution

Understanding this journal means understanding its university. Northwestern Polytechnical University is a public science and engineering university in Xi'an affiliated with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Its own introduction describes it as a national Double First-Class university characterised by talent cultivation and scientific research in aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology engineering. It traces its origins to three academic streams: the National Northwestern Institute of Engineering, formed in Hanzhong in 1938 from engineering institutions evacuated westward during the war; the East China Institute of Aeronautics, formed in Nanjing in 1952 from the aeronautical engineering departments of several universities and moved to Xi'an in 1956 as the Xi'an Aeronautics Institute; and the aeronautics department of the Harbin military engineering academy, which joined in 1970. The Northwestern Engineering Institute and the Xi'an Aeronautics Institute merged in Xi'an in 1957 to form NPU, concentrating research on defence technology for aeronautics, astronautics and marine engineering. A mechanical journal published by such a university inevitably reflects that heritage.

The 'Three A' character and the mechanical disciplines at NPU

NPU's own description says it has formed a coordinated disciplinary system led by what it calls the Three A cluster — aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology — complemented by a cluster it abbreviates as 3M: materials, mechanics and mechanical engineering, alongside computing, communication and control, the basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. Mechanical Engineering is named by the university as one of its three national Double First-Class construction disciplines, together with Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology and Materials Science and Engineering. The university comprises more than twenty professional schools and colleges, including schools of Aeronautics, Astronautics and Marine Science and Technology. For Mechanical Science and Technology, this setting matters in two ways. First, mechanical research at NPU is rarely generic: it is pursued in the service of aircraft, spacecraft and marine systems. Second, the journal's potential authorship sits inside one of China's strongest concentrations of aerospace mechanical research, giving it a distinctive contributor base compared with mechanical journals at general engineering universities.

Scope: design, dynamics, manufacturing and mechatronics

The journal's recorded scope covers mechanical design, dynamics, manufacturing and mechatronics. Mechanical design includes the design theory and methods for machines, mechanisms and components, including the structural and strength questions that aerospace applications make especially demanding. Dynamics covers vibration, rotor and structural dynamics and the behaviour of moving mechanical systems — central concerns for aero-engines, spacecraft mechanisms and marine propulsion. Manufacturing covers the machining, forming and assembly processes by which mechanical and aerospace components are made, a field in which NPU maintains major research strength, including national-level work on forging and on ceramic matrix composite manufacture recorded among the university's engineering research centres. Mechatronics covers the integration of mechanical systems with electronics, sensing and control, the combination on which modern flight control, robotics and unmanned systems depend. The journal's English rendering in its current series, Mechanical Science and Technology for Aerospace Engineering, makes explicit what the scope implies: these four areas are treated with aerospace engineering as the characteristic application.

Why the aerospace and defence colouring is real, not decorative

The aerospace colouring attributed to this journal is grounded in the university's documented record rather than in branding. NPU states that it is deeply rooted in western China and dedicated to national defence, and its history includes contributions to programmes the university itself names, including large aircraft, manned space flight and lunar exploration work, and models for the carrier, fighter aircraft, navigation satellite and crewed spacecraft programmes for which it has been commended. Its research infrastructure, as listed by the university, includes state key laboratories for solidification processing, unmanned aerial vehicle special technology, space flight dynamics, aerodynamic design and research, underwater information and control, combustion and thermal structures, and thermostructural composite materials, together with national engineering research centres for unmanned aircraft systems and ceramic matrix composites manufacture. Mechanical research published from this environment — on structures, dynamics, manufacturing processes and mechanisms for flight and marine vehicles — naturally differs in emphasis from the output of a civilian general-machinery institute, and the journal carries that emphasis into the wider Chinese mechanical literature.

Publication history since 1981 and core-journal standing

The journal has been published since 1981, giving it more than four decades of continuous presence in Chinese mechanical publishing by the mid-2020s. A 1981 start places its founding in the period when China's universities were rebuilding research publication after the late 1970s, and when NPU's own mechanical disciplines were expanding alongside its aeronautics and astronautics programmes. The journal is recorded as a Chinese core journal, the national core tier that Chinese universities and research institutes use in evaluating publication venues. Core status is significant context for a university-published title: it indicates that the journal is recognised beyond its own institution, which is the standing a journal needs to attract submissions from outside its home university. Its listing by NPU itself among the university's journals, on the same research pages that present its state key laboratories and engineering centres, confirms its place in the university's formal publishing portfolio rather than as an informal departmental bulletin.

Readership and place among China's mechanical journals

China publishes several general mechanical engineering journals, and each has a distinct institutional anchor. China Mechanical Engineering is the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society's transactions, edited in Wuhan. The Journal of Mechanical Engineering is the society's Beijing-based research title. Mechanical Science and Technology is the Xi'an representative of this family in spirit, anchored in a single, very distinctive university. Its natural readers are mechanical researchers and engineers who work at the boundary between mechanical engineering and aerospace: designers of aircraft and spacecraft mechanisms, specialists in dynamics and vibration of flight vehicles, manufacturing engineers working on difficult aerospace materials and components, and mechatronics researchers building actuated and unmanned systems. Graduate students at aerospace universities form another core readership, since the journal offers a Chinese-language, core-listed venue whose subject fit for aerospace mechanical work is closer than that of a general manufacturing journal.

Xi'an as a publishing location

Xi'an, the journal's home city, is one of China's principal aerospace and defence research centres as well as its historic ancient capital. In addition to NPU, the city hosts the national flight test establishment at Yanliang and a concentration of aviation, astronautics and ordnance research institutes, alongside other major universities. That concentration gives a locally edited journal access to a deep pool of specialist reviewers and authors within a short distance of the editorial office, while its subject matter travels nationally. The university's two Xi'an campuses — the Youyi campus in Beilin District and the Chang'an campus — place the journal's publisher in the centre of that research community. For a directory reader, the practical summary is simple: Mechanical Science and Technology (ISSN 1003-8728) is the Chinese-language, core-listed mechanical journal of Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an, published since 1981, covering design, dynamics, manufacturing and mechatronics with the aerospace and defence character of its host, and entirely distinct from the Korean Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology despite the near-identical English name.
