About Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics
Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics
Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (AAMM) is an international journal of applied mathematics and mechanics published by Global Science Press of Hong Kong in print and electronic forms. It carries print ISSN 2070-0733 and electronic ISSN 2075-1354, published its first volume in 2009, and appears six times a year. Its stated purpose is to provide a fast communication platform for researchers using mathematics as a tool for solving problems in mechanics and engineering, with particular emphasis on the integration of theory and applications, and it is distributed internationally through Cambridge University Press, on whose Cambridge Core platform its volumes are hosted.
AAMM belongs to a recognisable category of modern mathematics journal: Hong Kong-published, English-language, internationally authored, indexed in both Scopus and the Science Citation Index Expanded, and built around computational and analytical methods for physical problems. Its archive, which by 2024 had reached volume 16, is dominated by work on fluid mechanics, numerical schemes for conservation laws and the mathematical modelling of engineering systems.
Publisher: Global Science Press of Hong Kong
Global Science Press is an academic publishing company based in Hong Kong for the advancement of mathematical, physical and computational sciences, as it was described when its partnership with Cambridge University Press was announced. The Web of Science Master Journal List gives the publisher's address for this journal as Office B, 9/F, Kings Wing Plaza 2, No. 1 On Kwan Street, Shek Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong.
Global Science Press publishes a portfolio of mathematics journals from that Hong Kong base, and AAMM is one of its established titles rather than a one-off venture. The journal's own articles carry DOIs in the 10.4208/aamm series, the prefix and title abbreviation that identify Global Science Press as the registrant and AAMM as the journal, and its articles are also published through its own site at global-sci.com.
History from 2009
The journal's history begins in 2009. Its first volume appeared that year; a representative early article, "A Parameter-Free Generalized Moment Limiter for High-Order Methods on Unstructured Grids" by Michael Yang and Z. J. Wang, was published in volume 1, number 4, in August 2009, at pages 451–480, having been received in January 2009 and made available online in June 2009. Scopus coverage of the journal is likewise recorded from 2009 onward.
Publication has been continuous since then. Volume 6 appeared in 2014, volume 9 in 2017, volume 15 in 2023 and volume 16 in 2024, a sequence consistent with one volume a year and six issues per volume. Journal reference works record its frequency as six issues a year and its coverage as running from 2009 to the present.
Aims and scope
The journal's own description of its scope is precise, and it is worth quoting in substance. AAMM publishes as rapidly as possible manuscripts of high standard, through electronic submission and reviewing. It provides a fast communication platform among researchers using mathematics as a tool for solving problems in mechanics and engineering, with particular emphasis on the integration of theory and applications. The mathematical tools it covers include analytical, semi-analytical, numerical and artificial intelligence tools. Abstract or axiomatic mathematics is not encouraged.
That last sentence defines the journal as clearly as the first. AAMM is not a general mathematics journal: it wants mathematics that does work in mechanics and engineering, whether the tool is a classical analytical method, a numerical scheme, or a machine-learning technique applied to a physical problem. Its subject scope is correspondingly recorded in journal directories as engineering and mathematics, and in applied mathematics and mechanical engineering categories.
What the journal publishes: evidence from its archive
The most-cited and most-read articles listed by Cambridge Core illustrate the scope concretely. "A Brief Review of Elasticity and Viscoelasticity for Solids" is listed by Cambridge as the journal's most cited article, followed by work on the development of a lattice Boltzmann flux solver for the simulation of incompressible flows, a simplified lattice Boltzmann method without evolution of the distribution function, and a hybrid lattice Boltzmann flux solver for viscous compressible flows. Computational fluid dynamics, and the lattice Boltzmann family of methods in particular, is plainly one of the journal's centres of gravity.
Individual articles fill out the picture. Volume 16, number 2 (April 2024) carried a new finite volume mapped unequal-sized WENO scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws, from authors at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Volume 15, number 5 (October 2023) carried a study of the impacts of a down-up hill segment on the threshold of shock formation in ring-road vehicular flow, by authors from the University of Science and Technology of China and Lomonosov Moscow State University — an example of mechanics mathematics applied to traffic. Articles state their AMS subject classifications and keywords, give received and accepted dates, and record institutional affiliations across China and internationally.
The Cambridge University Press partnership
In November 2014 Global Science Press and Cambridge University Press announced that they had formed a science publishing partnership. The journals, which span the fields of mathematical, physical and computational sciences, were to be hosted on Cambridge's online platform to deliver functionality to a global audience. Simon Ross, managing director for journals at Cambridge University Press, said the Press was delighted to be working with Professor Tang and his team, who had developed an impressive portfolio of journals, and that the partnership increased its ability to serve researchers in the markets of greater China and Asia generally. Global Science Press said its journals were well known across Asia and featured articles from highly respected researchers, and that it looked forward to working with Cambridge to widen the distribution of its content.
For AAMM the practical result is visible today: its volumes, issues, most-cited and most-read lists are presented on Cambridge Core, with articles published online by Cambridge University Press, while the journal remains a Global Science Press title with its own site and DOI series. The catalogue entry in the clean file for this profile likewise records that the journal is published by Global Science Press and distributed internationally through Cambridge University Press.
Indexing and standing
The journal is indexed in Scopus, with coverage recorded as active from 2009 onward. The Web of Science Master Journal List records Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics in the Science Citation Index Expanded, with additional Web of Science indexes listed as Current Contents in Engineering, Computing and Technology, Current Contents in Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences, and Essential Science Indicators. Its ISSN and eISSN are given there as 2070-0733 and 2075-1354, and its publisher as Global Science Press at the Shek Mun address in Hong Kong.
Secondary journal directories that draw on Scopus data place the journal in the second quartile in applied mathematics and mechanical engineering categories. Such rankings change from year to year and should be read as a snapshot rather than a permanent property, but together with SCIE and Scopus inclusion they establish the essential point: AAMM is a fully indexed international journal, not a regional or unindexed title, and work published in it is visible in the databases that universities use for evaluation.
Editorial and scholarly connections
The journal's editorial community is international. Brown University's page for Professor Chi-Wang Shu, the Theodore B. Stowell University Professor of Applied Mathematics, lists Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics among the journals on whose editorial boards he serves — one of a long list of computational mathematics journals associated with his name. The presence of editors of that standing is consistent with the journal's content: high-order schemes for conservation laws, of the kind Shu's own research group helped to develop, recur throughout its archive, and its articles cite that literature extensively.
Authorship is similarly international, though with a strong base in Chinese universities, as the examples from Nanjing, Hefei and elsewhere show, alongside authors from institutions in the United States, Russia and other countries. That pattern — a Hong Kong publisher, a largely China-based but international author pool, and distribution through a British university press — is characteristic of the journal and of its publisher's wider list.
Format and article conventions
AAMM is published in printed and electronic forms, six issues a year, in English. Articles are cited in the form Adv. Appl. Math. Mech., volume, number and pages, with a DOI in the 10.4208/aamm series, and they carry the standard apparatus of the field: an abstract, keywords, AMS subject classifications, author affiliations, and received and accepted-in-revised-version dates that make the speed of its review process visible. The journal's emphasis on rapid publication through electronic submission and reviewing is thus reflected in the printed record of each article, not merely asserted in its aims.
Readers can approach the journal through two doors: Cambridge Core, where its volumes are hosted as part of the Cambridge list, and Global Science Press's own journal site, where articles are presented with their DOIs. Libraries and researchers who need to verify the title should use its ISSNs, 2070-0733 in print and 2075-1354 online, which distinguish it from similarly named journals such as Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and Advances in Applied Mechanics — different titles, from different publishers, with which it is sometimes confused.
