About Decoration

Decoration

Decoration (Chinese title: 装饰, Zhuangshi) is a Chinese-language monthly journal of art and design published in Beijing by the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University. Founded in 1958, it is China's flagship academic journal for design, covering design history and theory, industrial and visual design, craft art and design education, and it is a CSSCI source journal in art studies. Its founding institution, the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts — founded in 1956 as China's first craft and design school and merged into Tsinghua University in 1999 — created the journal just two years after its own establishment, and it has been published from that academic home ever since.

Founding in 1958 and the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts

The journal was founded in 1958 by the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, which had itself been established in 1956 — the State Council formally approved the academy on 21 May 1956 — as China's first higher institution devoted to arts and crafts, the field that later became modern Chinese design. The academy set up China's first interior decoration department, and Decoration was, at the time of its founding, the only academic publication of arts and crafts in China. Its Chinese title, Zhuangshi, literally means decoration or adornment, reflecting the vocabulary of its founding era, when the modern concept of design (sheji) had not yet displaced the older language of craft and decoration. Design historians writing in the Journal of Design History list the journal — rendered there as the Journal of Decoration — among the major formal arts and design journals of the People's Republic, noting that such journals served as excellent informational sources recording the country's major events in arts and design. A journal founded in 1958 that still publishes monthly today carries an archive spanning the entire history of design in the People's Republic of China.

From craft academy to Tsinghua University

The journal's institutional history follows that of its academy. The Central Academy of Arts and Crafts was founded in 1956 through the Ministry of Light Industry's deployment, moved to premises on Beijing's East Third Ring Road in 1957, and built the disciplines of Chinese craft and design education over the following decades. In November 1999, under the national reform of higher education approved by the Ministry of Education, the academy was merged into Tsinghua University and renamed the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University — joining one of China's leading science and engineering universities to its oldest design school. The journal moved with it, and is today published by the Tsinghua academy. That merger gave the journal a distinctive setting: a design journal housed in a comprehensive research university famous for engineering, where design rubs shoulders with materials science, computer science and architecture. The academy's own profile — holder of a national key design discipline and a state-level art design laboratory, with doctoral programmes in art and design — underwrites the journal's academic weight.

Scope: design history, theory and practice

Decoration covers design history and theory, industrial and visual design, craft art and design education. In practice its pages range wider: interior and environmental design, product design, graphic and information design, fashion and textile design, ceramic and craft arts, design management and design criticism all fall within its remit. The historical coverage is a particular strength. Because the journal has published since 1958, it both prints new historical research and embodies history itself: studies of Chinese traditional revival in interior design, for example, draw on Decoration alongside the Journal of Architecture as one of the periodicals with a continuous publishing history that shaped and recorded China's interior design development. Its theoretical coverage tracks the discipline's self-understanding — from the era of gongyi meishu (arts and crafts), formally endorsed with the founding of its parent academy in 1956, through the adoption of modern design terminology in the reform era, to today's debates on design for sustainability, digital fabrication and artificial intelligence. Few design journals anywhere can document their own discipline's terminological and conceptual transformation from inside, over six decades.

Craft art and traditional arts

Craft art (工艺美术) is not a historical footnote for this journal but a continuing commitment inherited from its founding academy, which was created to modernise China's craft industries and design education together. The journal publishes on traditional crafts and their contemporary transformation: ceramics, lacquer, metalwork, textiles, folk art and the design of everyday objects. This coverage connects the journal to China's intangible cultural heritage debates, since many craft traditions it documents are now formally protected as heritage. It also connects the journal to industry: the academy was deployed through the Ministry of Light Industry, and the journal has always addressed readers in manufacturing and craft production as well as in universities. In an era when Chinese design discourse often centres on digital products, Decoration's sustained attention to material craft — its techniques, its masters, its regional traditions and its modern redesign — preserves a strand of Chinese design identity that the journal itself helped to create in 1958.

Design education

Design education is one of the journal's named fields, and it writes from the centre of the system it studies. Its parent academy was China's first craft and design school; it set up the country's first interior decoration department; and Chinese design education expanded from that single institution in 1956 to hundreds of programmes nationwide. The journal publishes on curricula, studio teaching, disciplinary construction and the history of design pedagogy, serving the enormous community of Chinese design teachers and students. Its role here parallels its historical role: just as it recorded the founding generation's debates about what arts and crafts education should be, it now records debates about design education in the age of interdisciplinary study, digital tools and global exchange. For researchers of design pedagogy in China, the journal is a first source — both for current research and for the primary record of how the field's educational institutions were built.

Standing and indexing

Decoration is a CSSCI source journal in art studies. The Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index, developed by Nanjing University and established in 2000, is the authoritative citation index for Chinese humanities and social sciences journals, and source-journal status places Decoration among the recognised leading titles of its discipline. The clean-file description for this directory calls it China's flagship academic journal for design, and the external record supports that standing: design historians treat it as one of the two major formal arts and design journals of the People's Republic era alongside the fine-art journal Meishu; interior-design scholarship treats it as one of the periodicals that most influenced the industry's development; and Chinese design media histories describe it as a must-read publication among professional designers and college students. Longevity reinforces standing: a monthly journal published continuously from a national academy since 1958 accumulates an authority that newer titles cannot replicate.

Readership and influence

The journal's readership spans academia and practice. University teachers and researchers in design, art history and craft studies form its core scholarly audience; postgraduate students use it as a standard source; and professional designers — in interior, product, graphic and environmental design — read it as a professional journal of record. Its monthly frequency, unusual among academic art journals, supports that dual audience: scholarly articles appear alongside coverage of outstanding contemporary architecture and interior works and in-depth reports on innovative architects and designers. Chinese design-media histories credit Decoration as the country's first professional design magazine and a formative influence on the professionalisation of Chinese design in the reform era. Through citations in English-language design scholarship — including the Journal of Design History's surveys of design study in Greater China — its contents and its archive inform international understanding of Chinese design history.

Publication pattern

The journal is published monthly, in Chinese, in Beijing, by the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University. It has been published since 1958. Monthly issues are distributed through China's academic journal system and major Chinese databases, and its back run is held by art and design libraries across China. The continuity of publication — through periods when many Chinese periodicals were suspended or transformed — gives the journal an unusually complete archive: researchers can follow Chinese design discourse from the arts-and-crafts campaigns of the late 1950s, through the reform-era encounter with international design, to the mature, globally connected design culture of contemporary China, within a single title.

Significance

Decoration is significant less as one journal among many than as an institution of Chinese design itself. Founded in 1958 by the school that founded Chinese design education, published today by that school within Tsinghua University, recognised as a CSSCI source journal and described as China's flagship design journal, it has defined what design scholarship in Chinese looks like for more than six decades. Its coverage of design history and theory, industrial and visual design, craft art and design education maps exactly onto the discipline its parent academy created. WorldNM lists it as the essential Chinese-language source for the history and current state of design in China, and as a primary archive for any researcher tracing how Chinese design moved from craft to modern profession.
