About Nimo TV

Nimo TV

Nimo TV is a global game live streaming platform operated as the overseas brand and wholly owned subsidiary of HUYA Inc., China's leading game live streaming company headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong. Launched in May 2018, Nimo TV was created to take HUYA's domestic live streaming model into international markets, with an initial focus on Southeast Asia and Latin America where mobile gaming was growing rapidly. The platform offers live streaming of video games, esports tournaments and creative content on the web, iOS and Android, and later broadened into wider pan-entertainment categories including music, dancing, idol live shows and outdoor content. Outside mainland China, HUYA's service operates in selected overseas markets under the Nimo TV name, while the domestic service continues as Huya Live.

Origins within HUYA and Huya Live

Nimo TV cannot be understood apart from its parent. Huya Live began operating independently on 24 November 2014, when YY.com's video streaming service was spun out as a separate operation. HUYA Inc. listed its American Depositary Shares on the New York Stock Exchange on 11 May 2018 under the symbol HUYA, becoming, in the company's own description at the time, the first publicly listed Chinese game live streaming company in the United States. Huya had 150 million monthly active users at the start of 2019, according to figures reported for the platform, and grew into one of China's two largest game live streaming services alongside DouYu. Both services have collectively been described as the Twitch of China. That domestic scale, a catalogue covering thousands of games, official esports broadcasts and user-generated streams provided the content model, technology and streamer system that Nimo TV carried overseas.

Launch in May 2018 and early international expansion

HUYA launched Nimo TV in May 2018, entering markets in Southeast Asia and Latin America. By December 2018, only months after launch, the service reported 11.5 million monthly active users and 20 million Android app downloads globally, and it had entered 10 countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico and Brazil. The strategy was deliberately mobile-first. Company material issued for the Brazil launch described Nimo TV as a mobile-focused product building a leading mobile game live streaming platform, reflecting the fact that in its target markets most gamers played and watched on phones rather than personal computers. Streamers broadcast from mobile devices, viewers watched on mobile apps, and popular mobile titles rather than PC titles drove much of the early audience.

Arrival in Brazil and Latin America

On 6 June 2019 Nimo TV officially arrived in Brazil, announcing partnerships with top local influencers in mobile game streaming. The launch announcement named Piuzinho, Elgato and Crusher among the Brazilian influencers with whom Nimo TV had secured exclusive content arrangements. Brazil mattered disproportionately to the platform's future: by 2020, according to viewership analysis by Streams Charts, Brazil accounted for about 60 percent of Nimo TV's audience. Latin America more broadly, including Mexico, formed the second pillar of the expansion alongside Southeast Asia. The combination gave Nimo TV a footprint very different from its Chinese parent, whose audience was domestic, and made Portuguese- and Spanish-language mobile esports central to the brand.

Content, categories and esports

Games and esports were the core of Nimo TV from the start, and the platform focused on live streaming games, creative content and esports across its web, iOS and Android apps. Streams Charts, which tracks live streaming viewership, describes Nimo TV as firmly grounded in the Southeast Asian market, where mobile gaming is very popular, and notes that it actively collaborates with many esports teams. Beyond gameplay, the catalogue widened considerably. Categories tracked on the platform have included Liveshow, Voice Room and Just Chatting alongside individual game titles, and HUYA itself described Nimo TV as having broadened from games into pan-entertainment live streaming such as music, dancing, idol live and outdoor broadcasts. In the first quarter of 2022, according to Streams Charts, Liveshow alone generated 625.4 million hours watched on Nimo TV, well ahead of Voice Room at 44.7 million hours and Just Chatting at 39.3 million hours, showing how far the service had moved beyond pure gameplay in its biggest markets.

Audience scale and viewership records

Growth after the first year was rapid. Academic and industry summaries of HUYA's reporting state that by 31 March 2020 Nimo TV's overseas monthly active users had surpassed 24 million, more than double the December 2018 figure. Viewership data compiled by Streams Charts gives a sense of the platform's peak scale. In the first quarter of 2022 Nimo TV audiences generated 1.9 billion hours watched, only 3 percent fewer than in the last quarter of 2021. December 2021 was the platform's most successful month in that period, with almost 700 million hours watched and average viewers exceeding 946,000. In March 2022 average viewers stood at 818,700. The most popular individual streamer in Streams Charts' analysis was the Vietnamese creator MixiGaming, who accumulated more than 213 million hours watched between August and March and drew almost 985,000 peak viewers, while also holding more than 6.2 million subscribers on YouTube. The leading PUBG Mobile streamer identified in the same analysis was Baris G from Turkey, with 51.46 million hours watched, and the leading Mobile Legends: Bang Bang channel was the official Indonesian MPL channel, with 48 million hours watched.

Entry into India

In May 2020 Nimo TV formally launched in India, describing itself on arrival as a leading live streaming platform for games and esports and setting out to capture a large part of the Indian esports market. The company said it was hiring professional streamers from across India and building a community of esports streamers, clans and clubs. Its India business development and marketing manager Ahmad Mukhtiyar was quoted at launch saying the company already had a good pool of Indian gamers working with it. Launch coverage profiled early Indian streamers earning through the platform's monetisation policy, including a streamer known as Vivek, from Simdega in Jharkhand, who had built more than 79,000 followers and was reported to earn about 1,000 US dollars a month from Nimo TV. The India push illustrated the platform's streamer-recruitment model: sign local creators early, support them through an agency system and build local-language audiences around mobile titles.

Ownership, Tencent and the blocked merger

Nimo TV's corporate story is tied to HUYA's ownership. In April 2020 Tencent became the largest shareholder of HUYA, increasing its voting power to 50.1 percent and reducing JOYY's voting stake from 55.5 percent to 43 percent. As of 31 March 2025 Tencent beneficially owned 67.3 percent of HUYA's total issued and outstanding share capital and held 95.4 percent voting power, according to figures summarised from company filings. Tencent had planned to merge HUYA and DouYu into a single video game streaming business, but in July 2021 Chinese regulators blocked the proposed merger on antitrust grounds. That decision, and the wider regulatory tightening around gaming and live streaming that followed, changed the environment in which Nimo TV operated and reduced the strategic certainty behind its overseas expansion.

Retrenchment in 2022

In April 2022 Nimo TV limited or stopped broadcasting in many countries, including major markets such as Brazil, Indonesia and Thailand. Streams Charts reported that the platform stopped broadcasting in 14 countries in total, with other reporting putting the number of affected regions at around 12. The retrenchment followed new Chinese rules limiting broadcast time for underage viewers and a reduction in funding from Tencent for HUYA and Nimo TV. Reuters reported in April 2022 that HUYA had begun laying off hundreds of staff as Chinese technology companies scaled back after a regulatory crackdown, and that the Nimo TV unit, launched in 2018 as the international version of HUYA, was the most heavily affected, with large staff cuts already implemented. One industry report put the cut at about 70 percent of the division's employees. HUYA had 2,075 employees in 2020, according to its annual report as cited by Reuters. The effect on audiences was steep: between April 2022 and April 2023 Nimo TV accumulated 2.1 billion hours watched, a 62 percent decrease from the period before the regional restrictions, while daily average viewers fell by 73 percent.

Continuing presence and the Global Gala

The 2022 cuts did not end Nimo TV. Streams Charts noted that despite the shutdown in some countries, the platform remained popular in Southeast Asia and North Africa, especially in Vietnam, Morocco and Tunisia. On 8 April 2023 the company held the Nimo TV Global Gala at the White Palace in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, presenting awards to top streamers and setting out plans for the markets of China and Southeast Asia. Google Play data also shows the durability of the app's installed base: the Android application passed 1 million installs in September 2018, 5 million in January 2019, 10 million in May 2019 and 50 million in November 2020, accumulating more than one million ratings. The service that remains is smaller and more regionally concentrated than the 10-country, 24-million-user operation of early 2020, but it continues as HUYA's international face.

Position in global live streaming

Nimo TV's significance lies in the experiment it represented: the first large-scale attempt by a Chinese game live streaming leader to build a separate, localised brand for overseas mobile audiences rather than simply exporting its domestic app. At its peak it combined verifiable scale, with 24 million overseas monthly active users by March 2020 and 1.9 billion hours watched in a single quarter in early 2022, with deep localisation through exclusive influencer deals in Brazil, agency recruitment in India and esports partnerships in Southeast Asia. Its contraction in 2022, driven by regulation in China and reduced funding from its controlling shareholder's ecosystem, equally illustrates how dependent that model was on decisions taken in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. For viewers in Vietnam and parts of North Africa and Southeast Asia, however, Nimo TV remained a working platform with an active streamer community well after the headlines about its shutdown, a more nuanced ending than a simple closure.
