About Melolo

Melolo

Melolo is a free short-drama app launched by ByteDance for overseas markets, developed by its subsidiary Poligon — store publisher POLIGON PTE. LTD. of Singapore — and staffed by ByteDance's overseas short-drama team, whose recruitment in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen was reported by Pandaily in January 2025. Released in mid-November 2024 in Indonesia and the Philippines, it was ByteDance's first short-drama product to go abroad and its first to launch overseas without a paywall, offering vertical dramas of a few minutes per episode free of charge. By October 2026 it had passed 50 million downloads on Google Play, and AppBrain's rankings listed "Melolo - Short Dramas & Reels" as the number-one free entertainment app in Indonesia, with about 65 million installs and a 4.6 rating.

ByteDance's first step abroad

Melolo's historical importance is out of proportion to its size. When it launched in November 2024, the overseas micro-drama market belonged to paid apps — ReelShort, DramaBox, GoodShort and their rivals — built on coin unlocks and expensive social-media advertising. ByteDance, whose domestic Hongguo app was proving that free, advertising-funded drama could reach a far larger audience in China, had not yet tested that model outside China. Melolo was the test. KrASIA described it as ByteDance's first short-drama platform outside China, modelled on Hongguo, and managed by Poligon, the Singapore-based subsidiary that also oversees other international-facing ByteDance apps.

Pandaily reported the organisational build-out behind the launch: ByteDance established a dedicated overseas short-drama business team and recruited in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen for roles including short-drama product managers, operations staff and scriptwriters, with other reporting adding user-product and Europe-and-America copywriting roles based in Beijing and Shanghai. That recruitment footprint is the China operational base of the product: the publishing entity is Singaporean, but the team that built and ran the service was hired in mainland Chinese cities, which is why the app is catalogued here under Beijing.

Launch markets and the free model

The person in charge of the app told Chinese media at launch that Melolo went live in mid-November 2024 in markets such as Indonesia and the Philippines, providing free short-drama resources to meet overseas viewing demand, with the business then in an exploration and expansion stage. Southeast Asia was a deliberate choice: a mobile-first audience, high short-video consumption through TikTok, and price sensitivity that made the paid coin model a hard sell at scale. Melolo offered its dramas free from the start — ByteDance's first overseas short-drama product to launch without an initial paywall — at a moment when, as Pandaily noted, leading overseas short-drama apps were reporting daily revenues above one million dollars from paying users.

The app was initially absent from the North American Apple App Store while searchable on Google Play, reflecting a staged, Android-first rollout in its Southeast Asian markets. Store listings later showed subscription options alongside the free tier — weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual auto-renewing plans appeared in its App Store information — but the positioning that trade press consistently attached to Melolo remained the free model, in contrast to the coin economies of the Dianzhong and COL-backed rivals.

What the app offers

Melolo — full store name "Melolo - Short Dramas & Reels" — delivers vertically formatted short dramas with built-in subtitles and personalised recommendations. Its catalogue spans romance, revenge, fantasy, suspense and tragedy, mixing curated selections with exclusive original content and regular updates of new titles. Episodes typically last a few minutes, designed, as its store descriptions put it, for commutes, breaks and other short viewing sessions; the app supports HD playback and automatic full-screen viewing. The service's languages on the App Store were listed as English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish, reflecting its Southeast Asian base and later Latin American reach. Its Android package name, com.worldance.drama, and its publisher identity, POLIGON, are consistent across store trackers; the app had reached version 5.5.0 by late October 2026, an actively maintained cadence two years after launch.

Audience and rankings

Indonesia became Melolo's stronghold. AppBrain's Google Play ranking for Indonesia, updated 31 October 2026, placed Melolo first among free entertainment apps in the country, with about 65 million installs and a 4.6 rating; the same service listed it fourth among top-grossing entertainment apps in Indonesia at the end of October 2026 — a notable combination for a nominally free product, reflecting advertising and subscription revenue at scale. App Figures' Malaysia chart likewise placed Melolo at number one among Android entertainment apps. Google Play's own milestone reporting put the app past 50 million downloads, and TechNode's October 2026 market review, citing Sensor Tower, singled out Melolo as building an audience in Indonesia while paid rivals DramaBox and ReelShort each generated close to 140 million dollars of first-quarter in-app purchase revenue globally.

The testbed role: from Melolo to PineDrama

Melolo's strategic function became clear in 2026. ByteDance used the Southeast Asian service to prove that the Hongguo formula — free viewing, algorithmic recommendation, advertising monetisation — worked outside China, then scaled the same model globally with PineDrama, launched through TikTok in the United States and Brazil in January 2026 and past 100 million downloads within nine months. Analysts writing in October 2026 explicitly describe Melolo as the testbed: Robonomics' Hongguo review notes ByteDance "operates Melolo, a short-drama app focused on Southeast Asia" alongside the PineDrama launch, and ownership trackers list the two apps together under ByteDance's China-origin portfolio, with Hongguo inside China and Melolo and PineDrama outside it.

The lineage runs through Hongguo itself. Hongguo reached 168 million daily active users in July 2026 with users spending about 125 minutes a day in the app, and ByteDance's share of time across China's top fifty mobile apps rose from 34.2 percent in August 2025 to 41.8 percent a year later — growth in which Hongguo was a principal driver. Melolo was the bridge between that domestic phenomenon and ByteDance's global short-drama ambitions.

Market context

Melolo entered a format that was already enormous at home. The China Micro Short Drama Industry Development White Paper (2024) put China's micro-drama user base at 576 million as of June 2024, 52.4 percent of all internet users, and industry estimates expected the domestic market to surpass mainland box-office revenue for the first time in 2024, at about 50.44 billion yuan. TikTok for Business published its own 2024 white paper on marketing short dramas overseas, and a Cinda Securities count found more than one hundred short-drama apps active in overseas markets between November 2022 and October 2024. ByteDance's move was therefore defensive as well as opportunistic: Chinese rivals — Pandaily named Dianzhong, Jiuzhou, Shanhai and Maiya — were already abroad, and Melolo ensured the format's largest domestic platform owner had its own product in the field.

Position today

Two years after launch, Melolo remains ByteDance's Southeast Asia short-drama service: the top free entertainment app in Indonesia on late-October 2026 rankings, still updated, still free-led, and now operating in the shadow of its faster-growing sibling PineDrama. Its place in the record is as the experiment that came first — the app through which ByteDance learned, in public and at regional scale, that Chinese micro-drama could travel without a paywall.

Availability and access

Melolo is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store in its Southeast Asian markets and beyond; at launch it could be found on Google Play while not yet listed in the North American Apple store, and its store presence later broadened. The app is free to install. Its App Store information lists subscription plans — weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual auto-renewing tiers — alongside the free service, and its interface languages include English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish. Its sister Portuguese-language listing, "Melolo - Curtas e Reels", appears in store trackers under the same POLIGON publisher, reflecting the service's extension toward Latin American audiences.
