About Journal of Changji University

Journal of Changji University

Overview and identity

The Journal of Changji University is the Chinese-language academic journal of Changji University — formally Changji College in its Chinese institutional name — in Changji, Xinjiang. A directory of north-west China university journals lists it as a quarterly general journal, and its articles are attested in citations from 2023, issue 3, and from 2025, issue 2, the latter including research on college English teaching models. No ISSN was attested in the sources consulted for this profile, and none is claimed here; the journal's identity rests on its institutional home, its quarterly listing and its live citation record.

Changji University is the undergraduate institution of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, seated in Changji City some forty kilometres west of Urumqi, east of the regional capital along the northern foot of the Tianshan mountains. Its journal is the scholarly record of a university with more than sixty years of history, founded as a normal school in 1959 and raised to an undergraduate college in May 2001.

The sponsoring university: from Changji Normal School, 1959

The university's predecessor was Changji Normal School, established in 1959. In 1985 it was upgraded to Changji Teachers College. In May 2001, approved by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, it was raised to an ordinary undergraduate college — Changji College, rendered in English as Changji University. Institutional profiles describe a school-running history of more than sixty years, located at the centre of the economic belt on the northern slope of the Tianshan.

The modern institution teaches on two campuses covering some 1,209 mu in its 2022 admissions profile, through sixteen secondary teaching units, among them schools of humanities and communication, economics and management, foreign languages, mathematics and data science, physics and materials science, energy and control engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering, information engineering, educational science and an aviation school. Its seventy-four junior-college and undergraduate programmes in that profile included forty-nine undergraduate majors, and its full-time enrolment exceeded 31,000 students, with master's students among them. The journal publishes for that institution.

Changji: prefecture seat beside Urumqi

Changji City is the seat of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, the autonomous prefecture for the Hui people in the mid-north of Xinjiang, with an area of some 77,129 square kilometres, controlling two county-level cities, four counties and one autonomous county. The city itself, about forty kilometres — twenty-five miles — west of Urumqi, holds some 390,000 inhabitants, and at its north-east corner stand the walls and archaeological remains of the Tang dynasty city known as Ancient Changji.

The prefecture's deeper history runs through the Western Regions: in the Han dynasty the region belonged to the Rear Cheshi kingdom, the Han Protectorate of the Western Regions was headquartered at Beiting in modern Jimsar County from 60 BCE, and the Tang created Ting Prefecture in 640 and the Beiting Protectorate in 702. A university journal in Changji is published in one of the oldest continuously significant places on the northern Silk Road, at the throat of the route west — context that gives its humanities pages a local antiquity to work with, and its social-science pages a prefecture of farms, industries and cities in rapid development.

A quarterly general journal

The north-west university-journal directory classifies the Journal of Changji University as a general — comprehensive — journal published quarterly, an ordinary journal in the directory's typology, with submissions directed to its editorial address. Quarterly general journals of this kind are the standard scholarly organs of China's prefectural undergraduate colleges: each issue gathers the institution's research across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering in a single volume sequence, and the year's four issues form the college's annual record of scholarship.

The attested citations fit that profile. The journal was being cited from its 2023 third issue and its 2025 second issue, and the 2025 example recorded in the clean file — research on college English teaching models — is education-facing applied scholarship of exactly the kind a former normal school's journal carries: research on how the university's own central activity, teaching, should be done.

Scope and the education-research direction

The directory's listing for the journal associates it with education research and with innovation and entrepreneurship research among its directions — the fields under which it is recommended to university counsellors and education scholars submitting work. That orientation is consistent with the institution's history: founded to train teachers in 1959, raised through a teachers college, and still home to an educational science school and to programmes in preschool, primary and special education, Changji University produces education research as a structural feature of its academic life.

Around that core, a general journal's scope is the university's scope. With faculties spanning law, education, literature, science, engineering, economics, management and art, the journal's pages can range from mathematics and materials physics to Hui and Silk Road history, from chemical engineering to the management of the northern Tianshan economic belt. The breadth is not a lack of focus; it is the definition of a comprehensive college学报, whose task is to represent the whole scholarship of its institution.

Counterpart support and the university's networks

Changji University has built long-term counterpart-support relationships with Shandong University, Shaanxi Normal University, Jilin University, Xiamen University, Beijing Forestry University, Lanzhou University and China University of Petroleum (East China). Such partnerships, part of the national system of assistance to Xinjiang education, bring visiting scholars, joint training and research collaboration to a prefectural college, and they raise the scholarly traffic that a college journal exists to record.

The university has also founded research institutes of its own, including institutes for Chinese excellent traditional culture, applied mathematics, public economics, computer applications and sports culture, named in its admissions profiles. Institute-based research of that kind — applied mathematics, regional public economics, traditional culture of the prefecture — is precisely the material from which a quarterly general journal fills its issues.

The northern Tianshan economic belt

Both the university and its city define themselves by the economic belt on the northern slope of the Tianshan, the corridor running west from Urumqi through Changji, Manas and beyond, which is the industrial and agricultural heartland of northern Xinjiang and a core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt. Changji prefecture combines irrigated agriculture on the Junggar Basin's southern edge with the industry of the Urumqi–Changji conurbation, and its university was raised to undergraduate status in 2001 to serve that development.

A journal in such a place publishes the scholarship of development at close range: applied engineering for local industry, agricultural and ecological research for an oasis economy at the desert's edge, and social research for a multi-ethnic prefecture whose seat lies within commuting distance of the regional capital. The Journal of Changji University, quarterly and general, is the standing record of that work.

Changji University in the present day

The institution behind the journal has continued to grow beyond its normal-school origins. Its 2022 profile counted more than 31,000 full-time students, of whom over 22,000 were undergraduates, and listed new units that no teachers college of 1985 would have contained — an aviation school, an energy and control engineering school, a school of mathematics and data science. Its research output appears in international indexes across applied sciences and chemistry, and its collaborations include the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xiamen University.

Each stage of that growth enlarges the journal's remit. The quarterly founded for a prefectural teachers college now serves a multi-disciplinary university of tens of thousands, and its general scope — once simply the shape of a small college's scholarship — has become the deliberate mirror of a comprehensive institution.

Readership and role

The journal's readers are researchers and teachers in education, the humanities and social sciences, and the sciences and engineering, in Xinjiang and nationally, together with the university's own staff and students and the education community of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture. Its Chinese-language quarterly issues form part of the national record of scholarship at China's prefectural undergraduate colleges.

Catalogued as the Journal of Changji University, listed as a quarterly general journal and attested in citations from 2023 and 2025, published in Changji by a university founded as Changji Normal School in 1959, raised to a teachers college in 1985 and to an undergraduate college in May 2001, the journal stands as the scholarly voice of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture's own university — a comprehensive quarterly whose education research and general scholarship record academic life on the northern Silk Road, forty kilometres from Urumqi.
