About Laser World of Photonics China

Laser World of Photonics China

Laser World of Photonics China is China's leading trade fair for lasers, photonics and optoelectronics, held annually in March at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Organised by Messe München with the Chinese Optical Society's Laser Processing Committee and the China Society of Image and Graphics, it is the Chinese edition of Munich's Laser World of Photonics, the world's leading photonics trade fair founded in 1973. The Shanghai show's growth has been dramatic: introduced in 2006 with 163 exhibitors, 6,000 square metres and 8,557 visitors, it reached 715 exhibitors, 36,960 square metres and 40,291 visitors by its 10th anniversary in 2015, and in 2019 it welcomed 1,177 exhibitors from 26 countries on 60,750 square metres with 65,705 professional visitors — described by Messe München as Asia's leading trade show for lasers and photonics. The fair is traditionally co-located with SEMICON China, electronica China and productronica China in Shanghai's March electronics-manufacturing week, and its concurrent Photonics Congress China gives it a scientific weight unusual among trade fairs.

Origins in 2006 and the Munich Parent Fair

Laser World of Photonics China was introduced to Shanghai in 2006 as the Chinese edition of the Munich flagship, which Messe München had founded in 1973 and built into the world's leading trade fair for photonics components, systems and applications. The launch edition was modest by later standards — 163 exhibitors, 6,000 square metres and 8,557 visitors — but it planted the brand in the market that would become the world's largest consumer and, increasingly, producer of laser systems. The concept was to showcase the full range of innovative laser and photonic products, new solutions and technologies reflecting international trends, and the organisers' early ambition was explicit: by 2011, with the sixth annual edition attracting more than 275 exhibitors from 17 countries and 25,243 professional visitors from 57 countries in 2010, the show was described as on track to become not only the leading laser and photonics show in China but in the whole of Asia. The annual March timing and the SNIEC venue were fixed from the start, giving the young fair the continuity on which exhibitor loyalty and visitor habits depend.

Organisers and Chinese Partners

The fair is organised by Messe München, working with Chinese scientific and industry partners whose involvement gives the event its technical credibility: the Laser Processing Committee of the Chinese Optical Society and the China Society of Image and Graphics are the named Chinese partners in the fair's established presentation. This partnership model — a German fair organiser allied with Chinese learned societies — shapes both halves of the event. Messe München brings the global Laser World of Photonics network, international exhibitor recruitment and the Munich brand; the Chinese societies anchor the Photonics Congress China and connect the fair to China's research community, including figures such as Professor Youliang Wang of the Chinese Optical Society's Laser Processing Committee, who addressed market-development sessions. Messe München's leadership has publicly credited the partnership structure for the fair's trajectory: at the 10th anniversary in 2015, Deputy CEO Reinhard Pfeiffer praised the achievement of a decade of growth and pointed to a 22 percent increase in international exhibitors as evidence of the Chinese market's pull, while in 2019 Managing Director Falk Senger declared that the show had “impressively proved that photonics is a key technology in China.”

A Decade of Growth: 2006 to 2015

The fair's first decade provides one of the cleanest growth records in Chinese exhibitions. From 163 exhibitors and 8,557 visitors in 2006, it expanded through the global financial crisis without losing momentum: the 2010 edition attracted more than 275 exhibitors from 17 countries and districts and 25,243 professional visitors from 57 countries and districts, roughly doubling its audience within five years. In 2012 the show attracted 475 exhibitors from 19 countries — an increase of about 32 percent over 2011 — and 34,300 visitors, up 19 percent, on 23,000 square metres, up 33 percent; most major North American and European manufacturers of lasers, optics and cameras exhibited, alongside a rapidly strengthening Chinese contingent including Han's Laser, Wuhan Huagong Laser Engineering, Wuhan Raycus Fiber Laser Technologies, Castech and FocusLight. The 10th anniversary edition, held from 17 to 19 March 2015, gathered exhibitors from 20 countries: 715 exhibitors, a record 36,960 square metres and 40,291 visitors, with 117 companies in machine-vision technology complementing the laser-processing value chain. Photonics Congress China sessions that year covered industrial laser processing, advanced lasers, optics, infrared imaging, laser safety and light-beam analysis, attracting approximately 2,300 conference participants.

Record Editions: 2018, 2019 and Beyond

Growth accelerated in the late 2010s. The 2018 edition (14–16 March) hosted 977 exhibitors from 25 countries and 55,872 visitors. In 2019 the fair crossed a threshold: for the first time in its history it welcomed more than 1,000 exhibitors — 1,177 companies from 26 countries and regions on 60,750 square metres — and visitor numbers reached a new peak of 65,705 professional visitors, an increase of 17.6 percent on the previous year. The 2019 exhibition featured eight national pavilions — Germany, Japan, Lithuania, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United States and a Chinese pavilion among them — and nearly 1,200 new products were released in areas including new energy vehicles, LiDAR, biophotonics, 5G, foldable screens and smart processing. The fair continued through the pandemic years in adjusted form, with editions in July 2020 (819 exhibitors, 57,135 visitors in available listings) and March 2021, and by July 2023 it had reached 1,160 exhibitors and 94,648 visitors according to trade-fair listings — figures that reflect China's post-pandemic manufacturing rebound and the fair's entrenched position. March editions followed in 2024, 2025 and 2026, with the cycle continuing annually at SNIEC, confirming the show's recovery to its established rhythm.

Venue and Shanghai's March Electronics Week

The fair is held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in Pudong, and its calendar position is a strategic asset: it is traditionally co-located with SEMICON China, electronica China and productronica China in Shanghai's March electronics-manufacturing week. That clustering means a single trip to SNIEC in March covers semiconductors, electronics production and photonics — three interlocking segments of the same industrial ecosystem, since lasers and machine vision are production technologies for electronics and photonics components are inputs to it. Exhibitors and visitors routinely work across the co-located shows. SNIEC's hall complex accommodates the fair's growth from 6,000 square metres to over 60,000, and its Pudong location serves Shanghai's concentration of photonics users and producers in the Yangtze River Delta. The fair's organisers also operate within a wider World of Photonics network that includes the Munich flagship and a South China laser event in Shenzhen, giving exhibitors a multi-city Chinese and global circuit; the Shanghai edition remains the network's largest Chinese platform and its principal Asian showcase.

Exhibition Sectors: The Photonics Value Chain

The fair's sectors cover the complete photonics value chain. Its established areas are lasers and laser systems for production engineering, laser processing, optics and optical manufacturing, imaging and machine vision, sensors, testing and measurement, and optical communications; the 2019 edition organised its presentation into five major areas — Lasers and Optoelectronics; Optics and Manufacturing Technology for Optics; Lasers and Laser Systems for Production Engineering; Imaging and Machine Vision; and Optical Metrology and Quality Control, including infrared technology and applications — presented as a platform for the entire industrial chain with a focus on smart manufacturing. Machine vision has grown into a substantial component: 117 machine-vision companies exhibited in 2015, complementing laser processing with vision-guided solutions, and the Vision China conference sits within the congress programme. The exhibitor mix spans global leaders — Trumpf, Coherent, IPG, JDSU (in earlier editions), Panasonic and Newport–MKS Instruments among those recorded — and China's own champions such as Han's Laser and Raycus, whose rise the fair has documented edition by edition. Nearly 1,200 new product releases at a single edition (2019) illustrate the show's function as the industry's Chinese launch platform.

Photonics Congress China

Running concurrently with the exhibition, Photonics Congress China gives the fair a scientific programme of unusual depth. Its established components include the International Conference on Laser Processes and Components (LPC), the National Conference on Laser Technology and Optoelectronics, the Chinese Laser Market Summit and laser-safety workshops, together with sessions on industrial laser processing, advanced lasers, optics, infrared imaging and light-beam analysis. In 2019 the congress attracted 3,826 delegates including Vision China conference attendees, with speakers such as Professor Lu Yongfeng of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Professor Zhang Zhigang of Peking University's Institute of Quantum Electronics. The technical conference is organised in conjunction with research institutes, industry associations and media partners from China and abroad, and its market summit — where Chinese Optical Society figures assess the state of China's laser industry — is closely watched because China is the world's largest laser market. For exhibitors, the congress guarantees an audience of researchers and engineers alongside purchasing visitors; for academics, it provides an industry-facing venue that purely scientific conferences lack. This dual character — trade fair plus congress — is inherited from the Munich model and is central to the brand's authority in China.

Visitors, Exhibitors and Market Significance

The fair's audience is professional and international. Visitor numbers rose from 8,557 in 2006 to 25,243 in 2010, 34,300 in 2012, 40,291 in 2015, 55,872 in 2018 and 65,705 in 2019, with trade visitors drawn from dozens of countries — 57 countries and districts already in 2010. Exhibitor internationality has been a point of emphasis: a 22 percent increase in international exhibitors in 2015, exhibitors from 26 countries in 2019, and eight national pavilions that year. Yet the majority of exhibitors are Chinese, and the fair's history charts the Chinese industry's ascent — from a floor once dominated by visiting Western brands such as Trumpf, Rofin and Coherent to one where Han's Laser, Raycus and Huagong rank among the headline names and Chinese fibre-laser makers export worldwide. Exhibitor testimony captures the show's commercial role: Newport–MKS Instruments' Shanghai leadership called it “a fantastic show” and “a great platform to meet our current partners and to expand our business.” For the global photonics industry, the Shanghai fair is the indispensable annual point of contact with its largest market; for China's industry, it is both mirror and shop window.

Significance: Asia's Photonics Marketplace

Laser World of Photonics China's significance is summarised by its organiser's assessment that three days of innovations, solutions and full halls made it Asia's leading trade show for lasers and photonics. Founded in Shanghai in 2006 as the Chinese edition of a Munich fair dating to 1973, it has grown more than sevenfold in exhibitors and more than tenfold in space within thirteen years, reaching 1,177 exhibitors and 60,750 square metres in 2019 and continuing annually thereafter. It documents, in its own statistics, China's transformation from photonics importer to photonics power: the technologies displayed — laser production systems, machine vision, LiDAR and biophotonics components — are those of China's smart-manufacturing strategy, and the 2019 focus areas of new energy vehicles, 5G and foldable screens map directly onto Chinese industrial priorities. As a WorldNM event profile, the fair represents the most successful localisation model in technical exhibitions: a global brand, Chinese learned-society partners, a fixed annual date inside a co-located industry week, and a congress that keeps the scientific community inside the tent. Its trajectory remains the benchmark against which other photonics events in Asia are measured.
