Times Union

The Times Union is the daily newspaper of Albany and New York's Capital Region — founded in 1856 as the Morning Times, purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1924, and owned by Hearst Communications ever since.

About Times Union

The paper was founded in 1856 as the Morning Times, went through a series of name changes and mergers, and had become the Times-Union by 1891. In 1924 it was purchased by William Randolph Hearst, bringing Albany's morning paper into the Hearst newspaper empire. Its longtime evening sister paper, the Knickerbocker News, merged with the Times Union in 1988, and the newspaper has been online since 1996.

Today the Times Union is owned by Hearst Communications, with George Randolph Hearst III as publisher and Casey Seiler as editor (in the post since February 1, 2020). The paper is printed at its headquarters at 645 Albany Shaker Road in Colonie, New York, by the Hearst Corporation's Capital Newspapers Division.

The Times Union serves the Capital Region's four-county core — Albany, Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs — and in 2021 expanded its coverage into the Hudson Valley. It is known for watchdog reporting on New York state government and politics. In 2006 the paper paid $3.5 million over ten years for the naming rights to downtown Albany's arena, which became the Times Union Center in 2007 (renamed MVP Arena in 2022). Its digital home is timesunion.com.
