About Dalton Daily Citizen

The Daily Citizen is a daily newspaper published in Dalton, Georgia, serving Dalton and Whitfield County in the northwestern part of the state. Founded in 1847 as the North Georgia Citizen, it is one of the oldest newspapers in Georgia, with a publishing history that predates the Civil War and spans the rise of Dalton as the Carpet Capital of the World. Published as a broadsheet, the paper covers local government, education, business, sports, and community life in the Dalton area. It is currently owned by Carpenter Media Group, which acquired it from Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. in May 2024. The paper's website is daltoncitizen.com. As the flagship newspaper of the North Georgia Newspaper Group, the Daily Citizen anchors a family of publications that includes magazines and a Spanish-language weekly serving one of the most industrially distinctive small cities in the American South.

Founding as the North Georgia Citizen

The newspaper was founded in 1847 as the North Georgia Citizen, in the years when northwest Georgia was still a frontier region recently opened to settlement. The paper began publishing more than a decade before the Civil War, making it one of a small number of Georgia newspapers with antebellum origins that have published continuously into the twenty-first century.

The early paper served a mountain-region readership of farmers and merchants in what was then a sparsely settled part of the state. Its survival through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the economic upheavals of the late nineteenth century established it as a durable institution in a region where many early papers failed within a few years of founding.

Dalton and the carpet industry

The paper's modern identity is inseparable from Dalton's transformation into the Carpet Capital of the World. Beginning in the mid-twentieth century, the tufted textile industry concentrated in and around Dalton, drawing on the region's history of hand-tufted bedspread production and turning Whitfield County into the center of the American carpet and flooring industry.

The Daily Citizen has chronicled every phase of that industrial story: the postwar boom that made Dalton synonymous with carpet manufacturing, the consolidation of the industry into global flooring companies, the economic cycles that have buffeted the region, and the diversification of the local economy. The paper's business coverage has long treated the flooring industry as its signature beat, reporting on plant openings and closings, labor markets, and the industry's adaptation to global competition.

A changing community

Alongside the carpet industry, the paper has documented Dalton's demographic transformation. Beginning in the 1990s, the region's manufacturing economy drew large numbers of Latino workers and their families, making Dalton and Whitfield County one of the most heavily Latino communities in the Southeast. The Daily Citizen's coverage has followed the growth of Latino businesses, churches, and civic life in the area.

The paper's publishing group responded to this demographic shift by launching El Informador, a Spanish-language weekly newspaper distributed in and around Dalton. The publication serves the region's Spanish-speaking residents with local news and community information, reflecting the bilingual reality of modern Dalton.

Community Newspaper Holdings ownership

For much of its recent history, the Daily Citizen was owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., the Montgomery, Alabama-based company known as CNHI. Under CNHI, the paper was the flagship newspaper of the North Georgia Newspaper Group, a division of the company, and it operated from headquarters on South Thornton Avenue in Dalton.

CNHI ownership placed the paper within one of the largest publishers of community newspapers in the United States. During this period, the paper's leadership included publisher William H. Bronson III and later Keith Barlow, a veteran CNHI publisher who took over the Dalton paper while continuing to oversee other company properties in the region. The paper maintained daily publication with a focus on intensely local coverage of Whitfield County.

Sale to Carpenter Media Group

In May 2024, CNHI sold the Daily Citizen to Carpenter Media Group as part of a transaction in which the growing publisher acquired ten newspapers in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. The sale was reported by the Associated Press and marked the paper's entry into a new corporate chapter.

Carpenter Media Group, a Mississippi-based publisher, has expanded rapidly through acquisitions of community newspapers across the South. Under its ownership, the Daily Citizen continues to publish from its Dalton headquarters, now listed at 610 South Glenwood Avenue, with Jessica Waters serving as editor. The paper's website remains daltoncitizen.com.

Sister publications

Beyond the daily newspaper, the publishing group produces a family of magazines and specialty publications. These include the monthly Dalton Magazine, Calhoun Magazine, Catoosa Life Magazine, and Health, Mind and Body magazine, all distributed in and around Dalton and neighboring communities in Georgia and Tennessee.

The Spanish-language weekly El Informador rounds out the portfolio, serving the area's Latino population. Together, the publications give the group a multi-platform presence in the Dalton market, combining daily news reporting with lifestyle, health, and community magazine content tailored to the region's distinct audiences.

Coverage areas and beats

The Daily Citizen covers Dalton and Whitfield County government, including the city council, county commission, and the Dalton and Whitfield County school systems. Its reporters cover the courts, law enforcement, and public safety, along with business and economic development in a region where the flooring industry remains the dominant economic force.

High school sports are a staple of the paper's coverage, reflecting the intense local interest in athletics in northwest Georgia. The paper also covers community events, churches, and civic organizations, maintaining the community-newspaper tradition of recording the daily life of its readership in detail.

Circulation and market role

The paper's circulation was reported at about 10,294 in the 2013 Georgia Newspaper Directory, with earlier figures placing daily circulation above 11,000. Like community dailies across the country, it has faced the pressures of declining print readership and the migration of advertising to digital platforms.

Within its market, the Daily Citizen remains the primary daily news source for Dalton and Whitfield County, a region of roughly 100,000 residents. Its role as the community's paper of record gives it a central place in local civic life, from covering elections and government meetings to publishing the obituaries, announcements, and school news that bind a small city together.

Digital presence and publication rhythm

The paper's website, daltoncitizen.com, carries the daily report online alongside e-edition access for subscribers, extending the paper's reach to readers across northwest Georgia and to former residents following Dalton news from elsewhere. As the flagship of the North Georgia Newspaper Group, the Daily Citizen's digital operation supports the group's magazines and the El Informador weekly, giving the company a combined print and online footprint in the Dalton market.

The paper publishes on weekdays, Monday through Friday, concentrating its reporting resources on the days when local government meets and the region's business week unfolds. Within the Chattanooga media market, which spans the Tennessee-Georgia line, the Daily Citizen holds a distinct position as the daily newspaper of record for the Georgia side of the market, covering Whitfield County with a depth that the larger Tennessee-based outlets do not attempt.

Historical significance

A newspaper founded in 1847 that is still publishing daily in the twenty-first century is a rarity in American journalism, and the Daily Citizen's longevity places it among the oldest continuously published papers in Georgia. Its archives span the antebellum era, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the railroad age, the Great Depression, and the rise of the carpet industry that defined modern Dalton.

Through changes in name, ownership, and technology, from the North Georgia Citizen of 1847 to the Carpenter Media Group daily of today, the paper has maintained an unbroken connection to its community. Its history is, in large measure, the history of Dalton itself, recorded day by day for more than 175 years.
