About Gujarat Samachar

Gujarat Samachar is the leading Gujarati-language daily newspaper of India, published from Ahmedabad by Lok Prakashan Limited. Founded in 1932 in the wake of the Dandi March and the civil disobedience movement, with its first issue appearing on 16 January 1932, it is among the oldest Gujarati dailies in continuous publication and commands the highest readership of any Gujarati newspaper. Headquartered at Gujarat Samachar Bhavan in Khanpur, Ahmedabad, the paper is published from multiple centres across Gujarat as well as Mumbai and New York, serving the vast Gujarati diaspora. Under the stewardship of the Shah family, with Shreyans Shah as editor, the newspaper has combined deep Gujarati roots with modern multi-platform operations, including the Gujarati news channel GSTV launched in December 2012.

Founding in the nationalist era

Gujarat Samachar was founded by Chhabilbhai M. Patel in 1932, emerging from the ferment of the Dandi March and the civil disobedience movement that had electrified Gujarat. Its first issue was published on 16 January 1932, placing it among the nationalist-era newspapers that gave voice to the freedom struggle in western India. In the early 1950s the newspaper was acquired by Shantilal Shah, who had joined it in 1947 when it was owned by different promoters; after buying the paper he became its founding editor in the paper's modern incarnation and built it into Gujarat's dominant daily. Some accounts associate the publishing company, Lok Prakashan Limited, with luminaries of the freedom movement such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Morarji Desai and G. V. Mavlankar, reflecting the paper's nationalist lineage.

Ownership and leadership

The newspaper is owned and published by Lok Prakashan Limited, controlled by the Shah family. Shantilal Shah, who acquired the paper in the early 1950s and ran the Deepak Advertising Agency in Ahmedabad before taking over the newspaper, is regarded as the founding editor of the modern Gujarat Samachar. The current generation of the family leads the enterprise: Shreyans Shah serves as editor, while Bahubali Shantilal Shah is among the directors of Lok Prakashan Limited. The family's stewardship across three generations has kept the newspaper independent and family-owned, reinvesting in editions, technology and diversification while preserving its Gujarati editorial character.

Editions and circulation

Gujarat Samachar is published from Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Bhuj and Mehsana in Gujarat, as well as from Mumbai and New York City, giving it an unmatched footprint among Gujarati dailies. The New York edition serves the large Gujarati diaspora in the United States, while the Mumbai edition covers the city's substantial Gujarati community. The Indian Readership Survey of 2017 credited the newspaper with a readership of 11.78 million, making it the world's highest-read Gujarati newspaper. Its editions blanket Gujarat's cities and towns, with deep penetration into the Saurashtra, central Gujarat and south Gujarat regions.

Editorial character and coverage

Gujarat Samachar's journalism combines comprehensive coverage of Gujarat — its politics, business, agriculture, diamond and textile industries, education and culture — with national and international news tailored for Gujarati readers. The paper is known for its strong city editions with hyperlocal reporting, its business pages serving Gujarat's trading and entrepreneurial communities, and its cultural coverage reflecting the state's rich literary tradition. Its editorials engage vigorously with state politics and development issues. The newspaper's independence and willingness to publish reports critical of governments have been noted by political observers, and its credibility with Gujarati readers spans generations.

Columnists and literary pages

A distinctive strength of Gujarat Samachar is its celebrated roster of columnists, who have made its opinion and literary pages among the most-read in Gujarati journalism. Its notable columnists have included the writer and speaker Jay Vasavada, the author and critic Kumarpal Desai, the historian Makrand Mehta, the poet Anil Chavda, the humour essayist Bakul Tripathi, the poet Hardwar Goswami, the folklorist Joravarsinh Jadav, the writer Pravin Darji, the poet Rajesh Vyas, the novelist Vinodini Nilkanth and the science writer Harshal Pushkarna. This constellation of writers gives the paper an intellectual depth that complements its news coverage and has cultivated a loyal readership among Gujarat's educated classes.

Television: GSTV

In December 2012 the group launched GSTV, a 24-hour Gujarati news channel, extending the Gujarat Samachar brand into television. The channel covers breaking news, Gujarat politics, business, and current affairs in Gujarati, competing in the state's growing regional news-television market. The print-television combination allows the group to leverage its vast reporting network across Gujarat for both platforms and to offer advertisers integrated packages. GSTV's digital services further extend the brand onto streaming and social platforms, part of the group's adaptation to changing news consumption habits.

Digital presence

Gujarat Samachar operates a comprehensive digital presence through gujaratsamachar.com, offering breaking news, e-paper editions, videos and archives in Gujarati. The website and mobile applications serve Gujarati readers across India and the global diaspora, particularly in the United States, United Kingdom, East Africa and the Gulf. The e-paper replicates the print editions page for page, while the digital newsroom provides continuous updates. As with all major Indian dailies, digital readership has become an increasingly important complement to the print franchise, especially among younger Gujaratis and the diaspora.

Role in Gujarat's public life

For more than nine decades, Gujarat Samachar has been the newspaper of record for the Gujarati people, chronicling the state's journey from the freedom movement through the Mahagujarat movement and the creation of Gujarat state in 1960, the Navnirman movement, economic liberalisation and the state's emergence as an industrial powerhouse. Its pages have documented the rise of Gujarati entrepreneurship, the cooperative movement, and the cultural renaissance of the language. The newspaper's sustained attention to civic issues in Ahmedabad and other cities has repeatedly influenced municipal governance, and its voice carries weight in the state's political and business establishments alike.

The newspaper is widely noted for publishing reports critical of governments, and opposition leaders have publicly defended its independent editorial stance when its owners faced official scrutiny. This reputation for speaking truth to power, sustained over nine decades from the civil disobedience era to the present, is central to the trust Gujarati readers place in the paper — a trust reflected in its standing as the world's most-read Gujarati newspaper.

Market position

Gujarat Samachar is the undisputed leader of Gujarati print media by readership, far ahead of its historic rival Sandesh and newer competitors. Its readership of nearly 12 million represents extraordinary reach into Gujarati-speaking households in India and abroad. The paper's dominance in Gujarat's advertising market — particularly in retail, real estate, education and government advertising — reflects its mass reach. Its New York edition and digital platforms give it a transnational dimension unusual among Indian-language dailies, serving a diaspora that remains deeply connected to Gujarat.

Legacy and the road ahead

From its birth in the civil disobedience era of 1932 to its position as the world's most-read Gujarati newspaper, Gujarat Samachar's journey mirrors the Gujarati people's own transformation. The Shah family's three generations of stewardship built a single-city daily into a multi-edition, multi-platform media house without diluting its Gujarati soul. As print navigates digital disruption, the group's investments in GSTV, its website and e-paper position it to serve Gujarati audiences across platforms. Its enduring challenge is the one it has met for ninety years: to remain the trusted morning companion of Gujarati households in a changing media world.
