About Star Vijay

Star Vijay is an Indian Tamil-language general entertainment television channel owned by JioStar, the joint venture formed by the merger of Viacom18 and Disney India, and based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Launched on 24 November 1994 as Golden Eagle Communication, it was acquired by Rupert Murdoch's Star TV in 2001 and rebranded as Star Vijay, growing into one of the two dominant Tamil entertainment channels alongside Sun TV. The channel is known for its big-budget reality franchises, most notably Bigg Boss Tamil hosted by Kamal Haasan, the singing competition Super Singer, and the comedy-cooking phenomenon Cooku with Comali, as well as popular fiction serials such as Pandian Stores and Baakiyalakshmi. It broadcasts on all major Indian cable and direct-to-home platforms and streams on JioHotstar.

Origins as Golden Eagle Communication

The channel began life on 24 November 1994 as Golden Eagle Communication, a Tamil satellite channel promoted by local entrepreneurs. In its early years it operated as an independent regional broadcaster, competing in a market that Sun TV, launched the previous year, was beginning to dominate. The channel's fortunes changed dramatically in 2001 when Star TV, then part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, acquired a controlling stake and rebranded the service as Star Vijay. The acquisition gave the channel the financial backing, programming expertise and brand power of the Star network, and it marked Star's first major move into South Indian regional television, a strategy that would later extend to Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu through further acquisitions.

Growth under Star India

Under Star India's ownership, Vijay transformed from a distant second player into a genuine challenger to Sun TV. The network invested in original Tamil programming, improved production values and imported successful format ideas from the Hindi Star Plus playbook. Key to the turnaround was a focus on youth-oriented and reality programming that differentiated the channel from Sun TV's serial-heavy schedule. By the late 2000s, Vijay had established a distinct identity as the edgier, more contemporary Tamil channel, with strong appeal among urban viewers and younger demographics. The channel launched its high-definition feed in 2016, becoming one of the first Tamil channels to broadcast in HD, and continued to expand its original programming hours, including weekend movie premieres that rank among the most-watched Tamil film telecasts.

Bigg Boss Tamil

The channel's biggest breakthrough came in 2017 with the launch of Bigg Boss Tamil, the Tamil adaptation of the global Big Brother format, hosted by cinema legend Kamal Haasan. The reality show, in which celebrity contestants live together under constant surveillance, became a cultural sensation in Tamil Nadu, dominating ratings, social media conversation and press coverage during each season. Haasan's charismatic hosting, combining moral commentary with star power, was central to the show's appeal. Season after season, Bigg Boss Tamil has delivered the channel's highest ratings of the year and demonstrated Star Vijay's ability to mount event television on a scale previously associated only with Hindi networks. The franchise firmly established Vijay as Sun TV's equal in appointment viewing.

Super Singer and music programming

Before Bigg Boss, the channel's signature reality property was Super Singer, the Tamil singing competition that premiered in 2006 and became one of the longest-running reality shows on Tamil television. Airing across multiple seasons with junior and senior editions, Super Singer discovered and launched the careers of numerous playback singers who went on to work in Tamil cinema. The show's judging panels, featuring prominent music directors and singers, and its emotional contestant journeys made it a family favourite for over a decade. Vijay's investment in music reality reflected the centrality of film music to Tamil popular culture, and Super Singer remains one of the most respected talent platforms in the South Indian television industry.

Cooku with Comali and comedy formats

In 2019 the channel launched Cooku with Comali, a cooking competition pairing professional cooks with comedian assistants, and it became an unexpected phenomenon. The show's blend of genuine cooking challenges with unscripted comedy, driven by the comalis' antics, made it one of the most-watched and most-discussed shows on Tamil television, particularly among younger viewers and on social media. Its success spawned multiple seasons and cemented the weekend comedy-reality slot as a Vijay stronghold. The channel's other comedy and variety properties, including Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, the long-running stand-up comedy competition, and Adhu Idhu Yedhu, have similarly thrived, giving Vijay a deep bench of humour programming that complements its reality spectacles.

Fiction serials

While reality built its brand, Star Vijay also developed a competitive fiction slate. Saravanan Meenatchi, which premiered in 2011, became one of the channel's most successful serials with its story of an unlikely couple. Raja Rani, Bharathi Kannamma, Pandian Stores and Baakiyalakshmi all drew large audiences, with Pandian Stores, centred on a family running a provision store, and Baakiyalakshmi, about a homemaker asserting her identity, becoming long-running prime-time anchors. The channel's fiction strategy has balanced traditional family dramas with more contemporary themes, and its serials have frequently featured in the top-rated Tamil programmes nationally. Dubbed versions and remakes of Vijay's serials have also travelled to other Star network channels.

Talk shows and star-driven programming

Star Vijay has been a pioneer of the Tamil celebrity talk-show format. Koffee with DD, hosted by Divyadharshini, brought leading Tamil cinema stars to television for candid conversations and became essential viewing for film fans. Neeya Naana, the long-running debate show hosted by Gopinath, tackled social issues with ordinary participants and earned a reputation for substantive discussion unusual in entertainment television. These shows gave the channel a distinctive voice beyond scripted entertainment and reality competitions, positioning Vijay as a channel engaged with Tamil society's conversations as well as its entertainment. The channel has also been a launchpad for television anchors who became stars in their own right, with hosts of its reality and talk shows going on to anchor Tamil cinema events and award nights.

The JioStar era

In November 2024, the merger of Viacom18 and Disney India created JioStar, a joint venture controlled by Reliance Industries with Disney as a minority partner, bringing Star Vijay together with Colors Tamil, Viacom18's Tamil channel, under common ownership. The consolidation ended years of direct competition between the two channels and created a Tamil portfolio spanning the combined entity's entertainment, movie and sports offerings. Star Vijay continues to operate under its established brand within JioStar, with its programming streaming on JioHotstar, the merged streaming platform. The channel's strong ratings and brand equity made it one of the most valuable regional assets in the combined portfolio.

Legacy in Tamil television

Star Vijay's journey from a small independent channel launched in 1994 to one of Tamil Nadu's two television superpowers is a landmark story in Indian regional broadcasting. It proved that a challenger could break a seemingly unassailable incumbent's grip through differentiated programming, big-ticket reality formats and star power. Bigg Boss Tamil changed the scale of what Tamil television could attempt and remains appointment viewing across the state; Super Singer shaped the industry's musical talent pipeline; and Cooku with Comali showed that original homegrown formats could outdraw international adaptations. As part of JioStar, the channel enters a new phase with formidable resources behind it, but its identity, built over two decades as Tamil television's bold alternative, remains its most valuable asset.
