About RevSportz
RevSportz is a Kolkata-based digital sports news portal founded on 1 December 2021 by sports journalist and historian Boria Majumdar. Launched from a room in Majumdar's own house after his departure from the India Today Group, the outlet was built on a simple proposition: that Indian sports journalism should cover the country's full sporting landscape — Olympic disciplines, Paralympic sport, football, athletics and more — rather than functioning as an extension of cricket coverage. In the years since, RevSportz has grown into a significant independent sports media brand, known for its video-first storytelling, its flagship interview show 'Backstage with Boria', its coverage of multi-sport events and its stated mission of creating opportunities for young sports journalists.
Founding story
RevSportz was born on 1 December 2021. Majumdar has recounted that the decision crystallized two months earlier, in October 2021, while he was doing commentary for the International Cricket Council. Frustrated by years in which suggestions to cover the Olympics and Paralympics were shot down by his employers — he described himself as the lone voice arguing for multi-sport coverage — he decided he was done with his existing work. He discussed the idea with his wife Sharmistha Gooptu and two associates, and the four of them resolved to build an entity dedicated to covering different sports. Neither Majumdar nor Gooptu had business backgrounds, and the launch was deliberately modest: as Majumdar puts it, "On 1 December, RevSportz was born, in a room in my house." Trade press reported at the time that the venture was backed by investors and strategic advisors from Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
The founder
Boria Majumdar, the outlet's founder and editor-in-chief, is among India's best-known sports journalists. A cricket historian and Rhodes Scholar, he spent nine years with the India Today Group as a consulting editor before leaving in October 2021. He is the author of multiple books on Indian sport and has worked as a commentator and analyst across television and digital platforms. Within the RevSportz newsroom he is known affectionately as "Boria da". His public profile — combining academic credentials, a long broadcasting career and deep relationships across Indian sport — gave the fledgling outlet immediate credibility with athletes, administrators and audiences.
Editorial vision
The outlet's founding vision is summarized in the line Majumdar repeats as its credo: "Dream gives birth to change." The core idea is to challenge the notion that India is a one-sport nation. While acknowledging that cricket content naturally draws the largest audiences — cricket being, in the outlet's own description, akin to a religion in India — RevSportz committed itself to giving equal importance to all Indian sports, including niche and emerging disciplines. Over its first four years, the outlet has described its output as a series of ground-breaking stories across the length and breadth of the Indian sporting landscape, with particular attention to athletes and disciplines that receive little mainstream coverage.
'Backstage with Boria'
The outlet's flagship property is 'Backstage with Boria', a long-form video interview show hosted by Majumdar. The first season launched on the day of the company's founding, 1 December 2021, opening with an episode featuring Ravichandran Ashwin, and early conversations recorded in Kolkata included one with Sourav Ganguly. The show's format — extended, candid conversations with leading sportspersons — became the template for RevSportz's video journalism. The program attracted commercial backing early: Ageas Federal Life Insurance supported the show from its first season, and in 2025 the insurer extended its support for two more years. The show celebrated three successful years with an hour-long session with Ganguly at the outlet's Trailblazers conclave, played to a packed auditorium.
Studio and infrastructure
From its beginnings in a room in the founder's house, RevSportz has built out physical infrastructure in Kolkata. In March 2026 it inaugurated a new studio on Madan Mohan Tala Street in the city, with the ribbon cut by former All England badminton champion and renowned coach Pullela Gopichand, para-athlete Yogesh Kathuniya and former archer Dola Banerjee. The studio gives the outlet a dedicated base for its video production — interviews, panel discussions and event coverage — and its opening was presented as a milestone marking how far the venture had come in just over four years. The choice of sporting figures rather than media or political dignitaries for the inauguration reflected the outlet's athlete-centered identity.
Multi-sport event coverage
RevSportz has made coverage of multi-sport events a signature strength. Its journalists have covered the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the Olympics cycle, with the outlet's writers moving between cricket assignments and multi-discipline events — one staffer recalled being in Birmingham twice in the same year, first for cricket and then for the Commonwealth Games. The outlet has paid particular attention to Paralympic sport: at the Paralympics, eight Indian journalists were present, six of them from RevSportz — a striking measure of the outlet's commitment to disciplines that most Indian media cover thinly. For the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, RevSportz fielded the largest Indian media contingent, deliberately including young reporters on their first international assignments.
Creating opportunities for young journalists
A central part of the outlet's mission, in Majumdar's telling, is to open up sports journalism to young talent. When he set up RevSportz in December 2021, he argued that the fraternity had stopped giving young people opportunities: at major events it was usually the sports editor or a senior journalist who travelled while younger staff stayed at the desk, and with everyone guarding their turf, the profession was failing to attract the best talent. RevSportz set out to change that pattern by sending young reporters to major assignments. As the outlet approached its fifth anniversary in late 2026, Majumdar pointed to reporters such as Rohan Chowdhury — who had progressed from domestic assignments to covering events in Hangzhou, Paris and Nagoya — and Abhishek Mishra, who moved from covering domestic track and field, para-sport events and wrestling and boxing trials to his first international assignment, as evidence that the model was working.
The Trailblazers conclave
RevSportz has extended its brand into live events through the Trailblazers sports conclave, organized in Kolkata with Tata Steel as partner. The conclave brings together dozens of athletes, coaches, administrators and sponsors for sessions on the state and future of Indian sport. Majumdar has described the organizational effort as intense — barely sleeping through the three days of the event — and has credited the collective effort of the RevSportz team for its success. Athletes who attended wrote to the outlet congratulating it, with some describing it as the best sports summit they had attended. The conclave functions both as a brand-building exercise and as a convening platform for the sporting ecosystem the outlet covers.
Partnerships and sponsors
RevSportz has built its commercial base on partnerships with brands across sectors. Its first-anniversary announcements thanked partners including Ageas Federal Life Insurance, Coca-Cola, Just My Roots, Wow Momo, Aktivolabs, Fanatic Sports, Food N Wellness, BSV Global, Limca Sports and Lalbaba Rice, with RedFM Kolkata among its media partners for events. The sponsor roster — spanning insurance, food and beverage, wellness, logistics and media — reflects the outlet's positioning as a lifestyle-adjacent sports brand rather than a narrow cricket property, and its ability to attract repeat backing, such as the extended Ageas Federal commitment, indicates commercial traction.
Content, formats and position in Indian sports media
The portal publishes at revsportz.in across a range of formats: breaking sports news, news analysis, opinion columns, editorials and long-form features. Its coverage spans cricket, football, Olympic sports, shooting, athletics, wrestling, boxing and para-sport, with dedicated editorial attention to sports journalism itself as a beat — including commentary on fandom culture, media rights and the changing economics of sports media. The outlet's editorial voice is strongly identified with its founder's columns, but it publishes a wider team of writers and video journalists, and its tag-based archives show a newsroom producing daily output across disciplines.
RevSportz operates in a sports media market dominated by the cricket coverage of large television networks and the sports sections of national dailies and portals. Its differentiation is deliberate: a digital-first, video-led, multi-sport outlet built around a recognizable editorial personality and an explicit developmental mission for both athletes in neglected disciplines and young journalists. Approaching its fifth anniversary, the outlet presents itself as vindicated in its founding bet — that there is an audience, and a sustainable business, in taking Indian sport beyond cricket. Whether that bet holds at greater scale remains the open question of its next phase, but its first five years have established it as one of the most distinctive independent sports journalism ventures in the country.
