About Punjabi Jagran

Punjabi Jagran is a Punjabi-language daily newspaper published by Jagran Prakashan Limited, the publisher of Dainik Jagran, India's largest-read Hindi daily. Launched on 18 June 2011, it is printed from Jalandhar and Ludhiana and circulated across all districts of Punjab. As the fifth language daily of the Jagran group, the paper was conceived to complete the group's bouquet of publications in Punjab, pairing the Hindi Dainik Jagran with a Punjabi-language daily aimed at readers across the state's towns and villages. Its website, punjabijagran.com, carries the day's news alongside the group's wider digital network.

Launch on 18 June 2011

Jagran Prakashan Limited launched its Punjabi newspaper on 18 June 2011, with the first copies hitting newsstands that morning. The launch was announced at a ceremony hosted by Jagran Prakashan in Chandigarh the previous day, attended by Punjab's Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, to whom the group's chairman and managing editor Mahendra Mohan Gupta and CEO and editor Sanjay Gupta presented the newspaper. The launch was promoted through an ambitious multi-media campaign spanning television, outdoor advertising, radio, print, posters, roadshows and local ground-level initiatives across Punjab, signalling the group's serious intent in the Punjabi newspaper market.

The Jagran Group's Punjab Journey

Punjabi Jagran was the culmination of more than a decade of the Jagran group's presence in Punjab. Dainik Jagran had launched its first Punjab edition from Jalandhar in 1999, followed by a second edition from Ludhiana on 18 January 2004. The Ludhiana launch transferred some 55,000 copies from the Jalandhar plant to the new Ludhiana unit and added further copies, with the group targeting a dominant market share in the industrial capital of Punjab. By 2011, Dainik Jagran had completed ten years in the state, and the group decided that a Punjabi-language daily was the natural next step. In the group's own words, Punjabi is very widely used across Punjab, in large towns as well as down to the village level, making it an automatic choice to complete the group's bouquet for the state.

Ownership: Jagran Prakashan Limited

Punjabi Jagran is owned by Jagran Prakashan Limited, one of India's largest newspaper publishers and a listed company. The group's flagship, Dainik Jagran, is India's most-read daily publication, and the group's portfolio spans multiple languages including Hindi, English and now Punjabi. Punjabi Jagran became the group's fifth language daily on launch, joining the group's stable of multi-language publications anchored by its flagship Hindi daily Dainik Jagran. The backing of the listed group gives the Punjabi daily access to the group's printing infrastructure, editorial resources and advertising sales network.

Editions: Jalandhar and Ludhiana

The newspaper is printed from Jalandhar and Ludhiana, the two principal newspaper centres of Punjab, and is circulated across every district of the state. The Jalandhar plant serves the Doaba and Majha regions, while the Ludhiana plant covers the Malwa region, Punjab's largest. The two-centre printing arrangement allows the paper to carry region-specific pages and to reach readers early in the morning across the state. The group's existing printing units in Punjab, built up for Dainik Jagran's editions, provided the infrastructure for the Punjabi daily's launch.

Editorial Strategy and Content

Punjabi Jagran's editorial strategy follows the Jagran group's uniform content approach, adapted for a Punjabi readership: international and national news alongside intensive coverage of Punjab's districts, with a strong emphasis on local and hyperlocal reporting. The paper targets readers across all strata of Punjabi society, from urban professionals to rural households, and its pages carry Punjab politics, agriculture, education, business, sports, entertainment and lifestyle content in Punjabi. The group's research before launch had found that Punjab's readers respond strongly to colour and photography, and the Punjabi daily was designed with a visual, photo-centric presentation in line with the group's other Punjab editions.

Competing in the Punjabi Daily Market

Punjabi Jagran entered a market dominated by two well-established Punjabi dailies, Ajit and Jagbani, both powerful brands with decades of history. Industry observers at the time noted that the two incumbents were positioned very differently from each other, leaving room for a new entrant backed by a national group's resources. The group's officials estimated the Punjabi-language advertising market in Punjab at between Rs 75 crore and Rs 85 crore, and saw the combination of Punjabi Jagran and Dainik Jagran as a single bouquet through which advertisers could reach all of Punjab. The group also planned to develop advertising categories specifically for the Punjabi daily, beyond the categories already served by its Hindi edition.

Advertising and Commercial Logic

The commercial logic of the launch was to give advertisers one combined offering covering Punjab's Hindi and Punjabi readerships. With Dainik Jagran already established as a leading Hindi daily in the state, adding a Punjabi daily allowed the group to offer reach across language segments, social strata and geographies within Punjab. The group stated that the combination would drive advertising revenues while also adding newer readers and newer markets to its Punjab footprint. Retail advertisers, educational institutions, government departments and consumer brands targeting Punjab's households were identified as the core advertising constituencies for the new daily.

Digital Presence

Punjabi Jagran's digital home is punjabijagran.com, which carries updated news from Punjab, India and the world in Punjabi, alongside the group's wider digital offerings. The website is part of the Jagran New Media digital network, which operates some of India's most-visited news websites. The digital edition allows the paper to reach Punjabi readers beyond its print circulation area, including the large Punjabi diaspora, and provides advertisers with a digital complement to the print daily. The site's content spans breaking news, Punjab district news, entertainment, sports and lifestyle sections.

Position in Punjab's Punjabi Press

More than a decade after its launch, Punjabi Jagran remains the Punjabi-language arm of one of India's largest newspaper groups, competing with the established Punjabi dailies for readership and advertising. Its backing by Jagran Prakashan Limited gives it resources that few regional-language start-ups can match, while its challenge has been to build a distinct editorial identity in a market where Ajit and Jagbani command deep reader loyalty. The paper's presence has nonetheless expanded the choices available to Punjabi readers and intensified competition in the state's newspaper market.

The Launch Campaign

The launch of Punjabi Jagran was accompanied by one of the most ambitious promotional campaigns seen for a Punjabi newspaper. Jagran Prakashan promoted the new daily across television, outdoor hoardings, radio, print, posters and roadshows, along with a host of local ground-level initiatives running across Punjab. The scale of the campaign reflected the group's confidence in the market opportunity it had identified: a Punjabi-language daily market that, while served by well-established incumbents, had room for a new entrant with national-group backing. The launch ceremony in Chandigarh, attended by the state's Deputy Chief Minister, gave the paper an official imprimatur, while the ground campaign was designed to introduce the masthead to readers in the state's towns and villages ahead of the first copies reaching newsstands on 18 June 2011.

Access and Official Website

Punjabi Jagran is available at newsstands across Punjab through its Jalandhar and Ludhiana editions, and its journalism can be followed online throughout the day. Readers can access the paper's news coverage at its official website, punjabijagran.com, which carries the latest Punjabi-language news from Punjab, India and the world, along with the group's digital features and sections.
