About CarWale

CarWale is one of India's oldest and most influential automotive portals, a one-stop destination where car buyers, sellers and enthusiasts research, buy, sell and discuss cars. Launched in October 2005, it describes itself as India's largest auto media vehicle and today operates as part of CarTrade Tech, the Mumbai-based listed automotive marketplace group. From its office at the TechWeb Center in Jogeshwari West, Mumbai, it serves tens of millions of visitors a month with new- and used-car listings, on-road prices, expert and owner reviews, comparison tools, financing and insurance services, and free buying consultations. Its official website is carwale.com.

Founding in 2005

CarWale was founded in October 2005 by Mohit Dubey, Arun Sahlam, Gaurav Verma and Tufail Khan with the backing of the venture fund Seedfund. The company began in Bhopal, originally conceived as dealer-management software to help car dealers automate their processes. While building that product, the four founders realised that India's car market suffered from a deeper problem: demand and supply were disconnected and the trade was highly unorganised, with dealers unwilling to share inventory with one another. In October 2005 they decided to publish whatever inventory they had aggregated and present it to buyers as an online marketplace — and that decision became CarWale. The portal launched with 500 used cars listed, and the founders waited more than a week for the first transaction on the site.

Early struggles and the bootstrap years

The early years tested the founders' thesis. Dealers initially refused to respond to buyer enquiries generated through CarWale, fearing the transparency would erode their bargaining power; only when the leads began converting into sales did dealers embrace the platform. CarWale spent its first decade largely bootstrapping growth through organic search traffic — consumers searching for used-car buying advice discovered the portal — and by steadily building the industry's most comprehensive database of car specifications. A landmark product came in 2006: CarWale introduced India's first market-based used-car price guide, a pricing tool that let buyers and sellers understand a car's fair market value based on mileage, condition, age and model. The guide became an industry standard and anchored the portal's reputation for unbiased, data-driven information.

Growth, funding and milestones

CarWale completed a Series A funding round with Sierra Ventures in 2008. By 2010 the portal was attracting over 1.3 million visitors and 17 million page views a month, and in May 2011 it announced it had crossed 3 crore (30 million) unique visitors since inception — the first Indian auto portal to reach that milestone. Founder and then-CEO Mohit Dubey marked the occasion by crediting the team's relentless focus on car consumers and on products built around car prices and research data, which he said had made CarWale the single largest marketplace for car consumers in India. By 2015 the site was recording around 13.2 million visits in a single month, and contemporary industry accounts described it as India's largest automotive information portal.

Acquisition and the CarTrade merger

In 2010 CarWale was acquired by the German media group Axel Springer AG together with its Indian partner, the India Today Group. Six years later, in 2016, CarWale merged with CarTrade — the automotive marketplace founded in 2009 by Vinay Sanghi and Rajan Mehra — creating what the combined company described as India's largest auto media vehicle. Following the merger, CarWale has operated as part of CarTrade Tech, which went on to list on the Indian stock exchanges and today also owns BikeWale, OLX India's auto business and Shriram Automall. The merger combined CarWale's research-and-content strength with CarTrade's transaction and auction infrastructure, giving the group a full-stack position in both the new- and used-car markets.

BikeWale and the two-wheeler extension

Riding on CarWale's success, the company launched its two-wheeler portal BikeWale in 2012, applying the same research-first philosophy to motorcycles and scooters. BikeWale caters to a visitor base reported at more than 19 million a month, a figure the company said had grown manifold in the year before its "Mobility Outlook" launch announcement. Together, CarWale and BikeWale give the group parallel leadership positions in the four-wheeler and two-wheeler research segments, with shared editorial resources and a common technology platform.

What the portal offers car buyers

For a prospective buyer, CarWale assembles the entire purchase decision in one place. Model pages carry on-road prices for more than 300 Indian cities, detailed specifications, variant comparisons, expert reviews and owner reviews, photographs and videos. The compare-cars tool places shortlisted models side by side on price, features and specifications, while intuitive recommendation engines suggest alternatives the buyer may not have considered. Beyond research, the portal offers transactional support: competitive loan processing, insurance quotes, free consultations, help with dealer negotiations, and test-drive assistance. The used-car section pairs listings with the price-guide heritage — valuation tools that anchor negotiations in market data rather than guesswork.

Editorial and news coverage

CarWale maintains an editorial desk that publishes automotive news, launch coverage, first drives, comparison tests and feature stories on the Indian car market. Its content spans mass-market hatchbacks and compact SUVs through premium and luxury segments, tracking manufacturer strategies, regulatory changes such as emissions and safety norms, and the industry's shift toward electrification. The portal's news operation also feeds initiatives such as Mobility Outlook, the company's automotive intelligence offering. With car buying in India increasingly beginning online — industry accounts have long noted that a large share of Indian car buyers visit CarWale before making a decision — the editorial content functions both as journalism and as the top of the group's sales funnel.

Community and owner reviews

A distinguishing feature of CarWale is the weight it gives to owner voices. Owner reviews sit alongside expert verdicts on every model page, giving prospective buyers access to long-term ownership experience: real-world mileage, service costs, reliability niggles and resale behaviour. The platform also hosts discussion among car owners and enthusiasts, fulfilling the founders' original vision of a place where buyers and owners "come together to discuss and talk about their cars." Marketing campaigns over the years — including the "Kiss-Your-Car" Facebook contest run to celebrate the 3-crore-visitor milestone — have leaned into this community identity.

Scale and market position

CarWale has consistently claimed category leadership in the Indian auto-media space. Company communications have cited around 30 million monthly visitors to the portal, and third-party accounts have described it as having served more than 65 million Indian consumers in a single year. Its competitive set includes CarDekho, Cars24, Spinny and Times Internet's auto properties, in a market where the 2025 CarTrade–Girnar Software acquisition talks — later called off — underlined how valuable the auto-classifieds audience has become. Within CarTrade Tech's listed portfolio, CarWale remains the flagship consumer brand.

How to use CarWale

Car buyers can start at carwale.com, where the research journey typically begins with a budget or body-type search, proceeds through model pages with on-road pricing for the buyer's city, uses the compare tool to finalise a shortlist, and then draws on expert and owner reviews before engaging dealers through the portal's lead and consultation services. Sellers can list used cars with valuation guidance from the price tools, and two-wheeler buyers are directed to the sister portal BikeWale. Two decades after four founders in Bhopal published 500 used-car listings and waited a week for the first enquiry, CarWale remains the reference point against which India's online car-buying experience is measured.
