About Jaya Plus

Jaya Plus is a Tamil-language 24-hour news channel headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and part of the Jaya TV network operated by Mavis Satcom Limited. Soft-launched on 6 December 2007 alongside the music channel Jaya Max, it was conceived as the network’s dedicated news and current-affairs outlet — a long-delayed project that had been held up for years by licensing and wireless-clearance battles. The channel was formally launched in mid-2008 with a mix of news bulletins, current affairs, talk shows, political interviews and debates, and it has been politically identified with the AIADMK and the legacy of J. Jayalalithaa throughout its run. Jaya Plus survived a major existential crisis when the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting revoked the Jaya TV group’s licences over denial of security clearance, obtaining a stay from the Delhi High Court, and it continues to broadcast as part of the four-channel Mavis Satcom pay bouquet. Its official website is www.jayatvnetwork.com.

History: A Long-Delayed Launch

Jaya Plus’s journey to air was unusually protracted. Mavis Satcom, the company behind Jaya TV, had obtained the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s permission for a news channel as far back as 2004, but the project stalled for years in a tangle of wireless-protocol clearances and court proceedings. In April 2006, after the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the company was finally awarded Wireless Protocol Clearance (WPC) to launch Jaya Plus; the broadcaster had earlier approached the Madras High Court to speed up the process, with the Centre assuring the court of a decision on the uplinking application. Even then, the launch waited: the soft launch eventually took place on 6 December 2007, with the group’s vice-president for news, K. P. Sunil, telling the trade press that the channel “should have been on air three years ago” but had been delayed by the need to rework its outlook, and that a formal launch was planned for around 15 June 2008.

Ownership: Mavis Satcom Limited

Jaya Plus is owned and operated by Mavis Satcom Limited, an unlisted public company incorporated on 18 November 1998 and based in Chennai. Mavis Satcom is the corporate vehicle for the entire Jaya TV network, and company filings describe its business as broadcasting four Tamil-language pay channels: Jaya TV, Jaya Plus, Jaya Max and J Movies (Jaya Movies). The company’s authorised share capital is Rs 21.20 crore, and corporate data providers have reported annual revenues in the Rs 75–100 crore range. The Jaya network’s channels have historically been identified with the AIADMK — Jaya TV itself shares its name with the party’s late supremo J. Jayalalithaa — and Jaya Plus inherited that political identity as the network’s news voice.

Programming and News Format

Jaya Plus was launched as a primarily news-and-current-affairs channel with small doses of talk shows and quiz programmes. At inception the plan called for seven to eight news bulletins a day, supplemented by current-affairs programming, political interviews and debates on fiscal and policy issues. K. P. Sunil, the network’s news chief at launch, described the ambition as going beyond straight news into appointment-viewing analysis — “much more than just news”, as the trade press put it. The channel’s bulletins, debate shows and special election programming have formed the core of its output, with coverage of Tamil Nadu assembly elections, municipal polls and national political developments drawing its most intense viewership.

Editorial Identity and Political Alignment

From its clearance battles onward, Jaya Plus was understood to be politically aligned towards Jayalalithaa and the AIADMK — a characterisation the network neither hid from nor apologised for. Asked at launch about the neutrality of a channel backed by a leading political party, K. P. Sunil countered that no channel or newspaper was 100 per cent neutral, arguing that overt partisanship was less dangerous than the hidden agendas of supposedly neutral outlets. The channel’s editorial line has tracked the fortunes of the AIADMK: supportive through the Jayalalithaa years, navigating the party’s internal churn after her death in December 2016 — when Jaya TV and Jaya Plus famously suspended regular programming to carry continuous coverage of her hospitalisation and passing — and in later years identified by trade observers with the AMMK faction’s orbit. In Tamil Nadu’s political media map, Jaya Plus sits alongside News J (AIADMK), Sun News and Kalaignar Seithigal (DMK), Polimer News, Makkal TV (PMK), Vasanth TV (Congress) and Captain TV (DMDK).

The Licence Revocation Crisis

Jaya Plus’s gravest corporate crisis came when the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting revoked the licences and uplink-station permissions of the Jaya TV group’s channels — Jaya TV HD, Jaya Plus, Jaya Max and Jaya Movies — following the denial of security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The MHA-clearance mechanism has been used against several regional broadcasters, and for the Jaya group it threatened a complete blackout. The group moved the Delhi High Court and obtained a stay, allowing the channels to continue broadcasting while the matter was litigated. The episode mirrored the earlier licence-caution faced by Kolkata TV’s owner and underscored how vulnerable politically identified regional channels are to the security-clearance regime. The channels remained on air through the dispute.

Reach and Distribution

Jaya Plus is distributed as a pay channel on cable and direct-to-home platforms across Tamil Nadu and India, sold both a-la-carte and within the Mavis Satcom broadcaster bouquet. Under the TRAI’s 2019 regulatory framework, Mavis Satcom listed Jaya Plus at a maximum retail price of just Rs 1, the lowest in its bouquet (against Rs 3.75 each for Jaya Max and J Movies and Rs 19 for Jaya TV HD) — a pricing strategy that kept the news channel widely accessible. The channel has ridden the usual carriage disputes of Tamil television: it has periodically been moved out of DTH base packs into a-la-carte tiers during broadcaster-distributor standoffs, episodes extensively documented by viewer forums. Internationally, Jaya Plus has been carried on DISH Network in the United States (channel 594), serving the Tamil diaspora, and on IPTV services such as YuppTV.

Digital and Online Presence

Jaya Plus’s digital home is the Jaya TV network’s official website, www.jayatvnetwork.com, which carries programme information and live streaming for the group’s channels. The network maintains YouTube channels and social-media handles through which Jaya Plus’s bulletins, debate clips and breaking-news coverage are distributed to digital audiences. Like other Tamil news channels, Jaya Plus has found that political interviews, debate highlights and election-coverage clips travel strongly on social video, extending the channel’s reach well beyond its linear footprint — particularly among younger Tamil viewers and the diaspora who consume news primarily on phones.

Sister Channels and the Jaya Bouquet

Within Mavis Satcom, Jaya Plus sits in a four-channel bouquet alongside Jaya TV (the flagship general-entertainment channel, available in HD since a 2018 revamp), Jaya Max (the music channel launched the same day as Jaya Plus) and J Movies (the film channel). The bouquet has been sold to DTH operators as a single broadcaster pack — priced at around Rs 6 in some Sun Direct and cable offerings — giving distributors a one-stop Tamil package spanning entertainment, music, movies and news. The sister channels share infrastructure, studios and the jayatvnetwork.com digital platform, and their schedules have historically cross-promoted major network events such as election coverage and anniversary specials.

Headquarters and Operations

Jaya Plus’s newsroom, studios and broadcast operations are based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, where Mavis Satcom runs the Jaya network’s integrated facility. The Chennai base houses the editorial teams for the news channel’s bulletins and current-affairs shows, the production units for its talk and debate formats, and the technical operations for uplinking the group’s channels. The network maintains correspondents and stringers across Tamil Nadu’s districts for political and civic reporting, a newsgathering footprint essential to a channel whose identity is built on state politics.

Place in Tamil Television History

Jaya Plus’s history compresses many of the themes of Tamil Nadu’s broadcast politics into a single channel: a licence delayed by years of bureaucratic and legal friction, a launch blessed by a political movement, an editorial line fused to a leader’s legacy, and a near-death experience at the hands of the security-clearance regime — survived through the courts. As the news arm of one of Tamil television’s oldest private networks, it remains a fixture of the state’s 24-hour news landscape, broadcasting the AIADMK-aligned perspective into a market where every major party has long insisted on owning its own camera.
