About Photo Division, Press Information Bureau

Photo Division, Press Information Bureau is the Government of India's official photo agency — photodivision.gov.in — the visual arm of the country's principal government information service. Established in October 1959, it documents public events across the nation and supplies news photographs to Indian and foreign media, making it, in the words of one study of the institution, arguably the most comprehensive photographic archive of independent India. Its repository holds more than ten lakh negatives and transparencies, preserved in digital format and covering events from the pre-Independence era to the present day.

Place within the Press Information Bureau

The Photo Division is a wing of the Press Information Bureau, commonly known as PIB, the nodal agency of the Government of India under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. PIB itself was established in June 1919 as a small publicity cell under the Home Department of the colonial government, was renamed the Press Information Bureau in 1946, and has since independence been reconstituted many times into the sprawling information apparatus it is today. PIB disseminates information on government plans, policies, programme initiatives and achievements to print, electronic and web media, and the Photo Division gives that information its pictures.

Established in October 1959

The Photo Division was established in October 1959, more than a decade after independence, as the government recognised the need for a dedicated photographic unit to record the life of the young republic. In the years since, its photographers have covered state visits, parliamentary proceedings, public ceremonies, disaster relief, development projects and the daily business of governance, building a visual record that runs in parallel with PIB's written archive of press releases, which can be traced back to 1947. From 2004 onwards, photographs released by the Photo Division have also been archived on PIB's own website.

An archive of ten lakh images

The division's repository holds more than ten lakh negatives and transparencies, preserved in digital format, spanning events from the pre-Independence era to the present day. This makes it one of the great photographic collections of modern India: a visual history of the republic's politics, its leaders, its ceremonies and its transformations, shot by government photographers with privileged access to the corridors of power. For historians, journalists and researchers, the archive is a unique resource, documenting decades of public life that no private collection can match for official coverage.

Who the division serves

The Photo Division provides visual coverage of government activities not only to media units but also to the President and Vice-President Secretariats, the Prime Minister's Office and both houses of Parliament. Its photographers are present at the events that define the official life of the nation, from state visits and parliamentary proceedings to public ceremonies and the Prime Minister's engagements across the country. The images it produces become the official visual record of these moments, distributed to the press and preserved for posterity.

Supplying the media

One of the division's core functions is to supply news photographs to Indian and foreign media. PIB-accredited correspondents and news organisations draw on Photo Division images to illustrate their coverage of government, and the division's releases accompany PIB's written handouts, press notes and features. In an era when visual content drives engagement across print, television and digital platforms, the steady stream of official photography is an essential part of how government activity reaches the public, from front pages to social media feeds.

The digital home: photodivision.gov.in

The division maintains its own web presence at photodivision.gov.in, where it publishes special photographs from recent official events. Recent postings have included the Prime Minister interacting with beneficiaries of flagship government schemes in Delhi and handing over keys of government quarters to women allottees in Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi. The site carries the emblems of the Government of India and the Press Information Bureau, and presents the division's latest work alongside its institutional identity, giving citizens and the media direct access to the official photographic record.

The site is presented in both Hindi and English, carrying the emblems of the Government of India and the Press Information Bureau, with accessibility features such as adjustable font size, colour themes and a site map, and a "Special Photos" section highlighting the division's latest official photography for citizens and the media to use.

Working with PIB's other wings

The Photo Division operates alongside PIB's other functional units, including the Research Unit, which began operations in October 2021 to produce backgrounders, fact sheets, explainers and frequently asked questions for journalists and the public, and the Social Media Cell, which amplifies government information across platforms including X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp. Together these wings form a modern communications operation: where the Research Unit provides context and the Social Media Cell provides distribution, the Photo Division provides the images that give government stories their visual impact.

The public archive

Much of the division's work is preserved in PIB's public archives, where official communications of the Government of India from 1947 onwards can be found. The archived records are divided into three periods, with the earliest press releases dating from 1947, and photographs released by the Photo Division have been archived from 2004 onwards, searchable year-wise, ministry-wise and by keyword. For a researcher tracing how a policy was presented, or a journalist looking for the official images of an event two decades ago, the archive is the first port of call, and the digitisation of the division's vast holdings of negatives and transparencies continues to make more of this visual history accessible.

PIB's nationwide information network

The Photo Division's work reaches the public through one of the largest government information networks in the world. PIB disseminates information to print, electronic and web media in fourteen Indian official languages, including Dogri, Punjabi, Bengali, Odia, Gujarati, Marathi, Manipuri, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Konkani and Urdu, in addition to Hindi and English. The head of PIB also serves as the Official Spokesperson of the Government of India, holding the rank of Principal Director General. Operating from the National Media Centre in New Delhi with offices across the country, PIB organises press conferences, interviews and press tours for journalists, and the Photo Division's images travel with its words into every corner of the republic.

Six decades behind the official lens

From its establishment in October 1959 to the present day, the Photo Division has maintained an unbroken visual chronicle of Indian public life. Its archive reaches back to before independence and forward to events photographed this week, a continuity that few institutions anywhere can claim. As cameras have changed from film to digital and distribution has moved from darkrooms and couriers to websites and social media feeds, the division has adapted its craft while keeping its essential mission: to record, faithfully and promptly, what the Government of India does in the name of its people. In that mission it remains, after more than sixty-five years, the country's official photo agency.

The visual memory of the republic

More than six decades after its establishment, the Photo Division remains the Government of India's eye on its own history. Its cameras have recorded prime ministers and presidents, wars and peace missions, natural calamities and national celebrations, producing a continuous visual narrative of independent India that is without parallel. As the archive grows by thousands of images each year and digitisation makes ever more of it accessible, the division's role as the custodian of the nation's official visual memory only becomes more significant, serving journalists today and historians tomorrow.
