About Gwent Gazette

The Gwent Gazette is a weekly newspaper distributed in Blaenau Gwent in south Wales, serving the former coal and steel communities of the western Valleys. It is one of the seven titles in the Celtic Weekly Newspapers series, published by Media Wales Ltd — formerly Western Mail & Echo Ltd — which is part of Reach plc, one of Britain's largest newspaper groups. Published on Thursdays, the Gazette reports on breaking local news, community affairs, local sport and entertainment, alongside jobs, motors and homes advertising. With editions stretching back more than half a century, it is the long-established weekly voice of Blaenau Gwent.

A Weekly for Blaenau Gwent

The Gwent Gazette is a weekly newspaper distributed across Blaenau Gwent, the county borough in the south Wales Valleys whose principal towns are Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Abertillery and Brynmawr. Industry listings describe it straightforwardly as a weekly newspaper distributed in Blaenau Gwent, south Wales. The paper's journalism is rooted in the civic life of the borough: the county borough council, the area's schools and health services, its courts, its churches and chapels, and the voluntary and community groups that remain the backbone of Valleys life. Library catalogue records describe the Gazette's content as covering breaking local news, what's on in the community, local sport and local entertainment, as well as jobs, motors and homes — the classic mix of the Welsh weekly, combining hard local news with the service journalism and advertising that sustain the title commercially.

Part of the Celtic Weekly Newspapers

The Gazette belongs to the Celtic Weekly Newspapers series, the group of seven weekly newspapers published in south Wales by Media Wales Ltd. The series comprises the Cynon Valley Leader, the Glamorgan Gazette, the Gwent Gazette, the Merthyr Express, the Pontypridd & Llantrisant Observer, the Rhondda Leader and the Rhymney Valley Express — a roll-call of the Valleys weeklies, each serving its own former coalfield community. An eighth title, the Neath Guardian — which also had a Port Talbot edition — was part of the series until its closure in October 2009. The Celtic weeklies are among the most recognisable newspaper brands in the Valleys, with histories rooted in the industrial communities they serve. Within the series, the Gwent Gazette is the title for Blaenau Gwent, just as the Merthyr Express serves Merthyr Tydfil and the Rhondda Leader serves the Rhondda.

Media Wales and Reach plc

Media Wales Ltd, the Gazette's publisher, was formerly known as Western Mail & Echo Ltd — the company behind the Western Mail, Wales's national daily newspaper, and the South Wales Echo, the Cardiff daily. The company was part of Trinity Mirror, which in 2018 acquired Richard Desmond's Northern & Shell titles and rebranded itself as Reach plc. The Gwent Gazette is therefore a Reach plc title, published within the group's Welsh operation alongside the Western Mail, the South Wales Echo, the Daily Post in North Wales and the network of Welsh weeklies. The Reach ownership gives the Gazette access to group-wide digital platforms, commercial systems and editorial resources, while the paper retains its own masthead, patch and local identity. The consolidation of the Welsh press under a single large publisher mirrors the pattern across Britain, where most local titles are now owned by a handful of national groups.

More Than Half a Century in Print

The Gwent Gazette is a long-established title with editions held in newspaper archives stretching back to at least the late 1960s. The British Newspaper Archive holds Gazette editions from 1969 and 1970, published on Thursdays — the paper's traditional publication day — with front pages covering the life of the Valleys in that era, from local UFO societies to council affairs. The paper's own pages have served as a historical record cited by researchers: a report headed "Blaenau Gwent is now a borough" in the Gwent Gazette of 27 September 1974 is cited in the documented history of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, while the paper's coverage of local elections in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s — including the 1976 contests and the 1991 "election shock for Labour" — forms part of the borough's political record. Thursday publication has been the paper's rhythm for decades, and recent e-paper editions continue to appear on Thursdays.

The 2008 Shake-Up

In 2008 the Celtic weeklies underwent a significant restructuring as Trinity Mirror's Media Wales division sought to reduce costs. Each of the seven titles had its own editor, but the company proposed that most would share a boss: one editor for the Merthyr Express, Rhymney Valley Express and Gwent Gazette combined, one for the Rhondda Leader and Pontypridd Observer, one for the Cynon Valley Leader, and a fourth for the Glamorgan Gazette and the Neath and Port Talbot Guardian — cutting the number of editors from seven to four. At the same time the company announced the closure of three of its six Valleys branch offices, at Aberdare, Ebbw Vale and Neath, with the loss of two senior reporters' posts and an inputter's post. The Ebbw Vale office was the Gazette's historic base — its telephone code, Ebbw Vale 3W41b0, appeared in the paper's masthead in the 1980s — and its closure ended the paper's physical newsroom presence in the town it serves. The three offices that remained open were at Merthyr, Bridgend and Pontypridd. NUJ members at Media Wales voted to ballot for strike action if compulsory redundancies followed, underlining the strength of feeling the changes provoked.

What the Gazette Covers

The Gazette's journalism covers the full range of Valleys weekly news. Council business is central: Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council's decisions on services, regeneration, education and planning are the staple of the news pages, and the paper has chronicled the borough's political history from the 1970s onwards. Crime and the courts, health services, school news, community campaigns and charity fundraising all feature, alongside extensive sports coverage — football, rugby, cricket, bowls and the area's boxing and athletics traditions. The "what's on" and entertainment coverage reflects the Valleys' lively cultural life, from male voice choirs and brass bands to local theatre and festivals. Jobs, motors and homes advertising sections serve readers and local businesses alike. The paper's Thursday rhythm means it captures the week's events for weekend reading, and its e-paper edition extends that weekly package to digital readers.

Blaenau Gwent: The Community It Serves

Blaenau Gwent — "the high lands of Gwent" — is one of the defining Valleys communities. Its towns grew around iron, coal and steel: Ebbw Vale, dominated for 200 years by its steelworks until their closure; Tredegar, birthplace of the National Health Service's spiritual founder Aneurin Bevan and home of the pioneering Tredegar Medical Aid Society; Abertillery and Brynmawr, built on the coal seams of the western Valleys. The borough's motto is "Unbed a Rhyddid" — Unity and Freedom. The decline of heavy industry brought profound economic and social challenges, and the area has been the focus of sustained regeneration efforts, including the redevelopment of the former Ebbw Vale steelworks site. For a local newspaper, this is demanding but vital territory: a community with a powerful industrial heritage, strong political traditions, and an enduring need for the accountability journalism, community noticeboard and shared record that a weekly paper provides.

Readers and the Paper's Place in the Valleys

The Gwent Gazette's readers have shown a lasting attachment to the title. Subscription promotions have offered home delivery and retail collection with discounts for new customers, reflecting the paper's efforts to sustain its readership in print. The title's e-paper editions, available through digital newsstand services, carry the weekly paper to readers who prefer to read on screen. Community groups across Blaenau Gwent — from charity walkers raising money for the Hospice of the Valleys to sports clubs and societies — continue to look to the Gazette for coverage of their activities, and appearances in the paper remain a valued recognition for local fundraisers and volunteers. In a media landscape where Valleys news is increasingly consumed through social media and the WalesOnline network, the Gazette's dedicated Blaenau Gwent focus gives it a distinctive role: no other title covers the borough week in, week out, with the same depth.

The Gwent Gazette Today

Today the Gwent Gazette continues to publish weekly on Thursdays as part of the Celtic Weekly Newspapers series within Media Wales and Reach plc, serving Blaenau Gwent with local news, sport, entertainment and advertising. Its history — from the Thursday editions of the late 1960s, through the Trinity Mirror years, the 2008 restructuring that closed its Ebbw Vale office and merged its editorship, to its present place in Britain's largest local newspaper group — charts the transformation of the Valleys press over more than half a century. For the people of Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Abertillery, Brynmawr and the surrounding Valleys communities, the Gazette remains their weekly newspaper: the record of council decisions and court cases, school achievements and sporting triumphs, and the everyday life of a borough whose industrial past and regenerating present give its journalists no shortage of stories to tell.
