About Extreme Sports Channel

Overview

Extreme Sports Channel is a television channel devoted to action, adventure and extreme sports, broadcasting programmes and events covering surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking and a wide range of other alternative sports. Launched in May 1999 as the world's first 24-hour television channel dedicated to extreme sports, it grew out of the Extreme Group founded by Al Gosling and has been part of the AMC Networks International portfolio since AMC Networks acquired Chellomedia in 2014. In the United Kingdom the channel is currently available through the Channelbox streaming service on Freeview and through the Extreme Plus streaming application, after a history that has seen it carried on Sky and on its own Freeview slot.

The channel was conceived as a cross between MTV and a sports channel, a youth-oriented service built around spectacular and breathtaking sports with a strong lifestyle and music element. Its programming mixes event coverage, magazine shows, documentaries and adventure programming, and it has been broadcast in dozens of countries and multiple languages. The Extreme brand behind the channel extends beyond television into drinks, clothing, travel and other licensed businesses.

Founding and the Extreme Group

The Extreme Sports Channel was the brainchild of Al Gosling and the Extreme Group, a UK-based extreme sports media production and distribution company. Extreme began by working with television producers to sell lifestyle and extreme sports television shows to broadcasters around the world, and in 1998 Gosling developed the idea of creating a dedicated television channel for the action sports that he and his colleagues were passionate about. The concept was described at the time as the sports channel for the younger generation, focusing on extreme and adventure sports and incorporating programming and live events from around the world.

Extreme was founded by Al Gosling in 1995 and developed around a passion for building the brand across media and consumer products. The television channel became the flagship of that brand strategy, giving Extreme 24-hour exposure that enabled the group to move into licensed businesses covering drinks, retail, clothing, mobile, pre-pay cards, travel, electronics, hotels and theme parks. The channel's credibility in the action sports world underpinned the wider brand's expansion into more than 70 countries.

European launch in May 1999

The Extreme Sports Channel launched on 1 May 1999 across 19 European territories, developed as a joint venture between the Extreme Group and UPCtv, the channel creation and distribution arm of the European cable operator UPC. The launch territories included Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland, with carriage discussions under way for further markets including the UK, Germany and the United States.

The launch was promoted as the arrival of the world's first 24/7 television channel devoted to extreme sports, with an initial slate covering air sports such as base jumping, bungy jumping and sky surfing, beach sports including volleyball and sandboarding, rock sports such as off-road rallying and mountain climbing, street sports including BMX, skateboarding and inline skating, water sports such as wakeboarding, surfing and windsurfing, and snow and ice sports including snowboarding and ice climbing. The channel was cleared for broadband and internet broadcast from an early stage, anticipating the move of video viewing online.

UK launch and Sky years

The channel launched in the United Kingdom in October 2000, going on air to digital satellite viewers on Sky Digital, where it could be found on EPG channel 422 between Eurosport and MTV. The UK launch was presented as the channel's arrival in its home territory after its success in mainland Europe, and it broadcast 24 hours a day with programmes and events on surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX and mountain biking. Programme details were published on the Sky electronic programme guide and on the channel's website at extreme.com.

The UK version of the channel was free-to-air from launch until the summer of 2006, when a deal with BSkyB meant that it became an encrypted pay-television service. On 28 September 2011 the channel began broadcasting in widescreen 16:9 format. It remained on the Sky platform until 31 December 2015, when it was removed from the Sky electronic programme guide, ending its long run as a Sky channel.

AMC Networks ownership

The channel's ownership changed as the European channel business consolidated. The Extreme Sports Channel had become part of Chellomedia, the international channels division of Liberty Global, and on 2 February 2014 AMC Networks acquired Chellomedia. Chellomedia was rebranded as AMC Networks International on 8 July 2014, and the Extreme Sports Channel became part of AMC Networks International's portfolio of channels, sitting alongside services such as CBS Reality and the Outdoor Channel in the company's international line-up.

Under AMC Networks International the channel has continued to be distributed internationally, with localised versions serving different European markets. The AMC ownership gave the channel the backing of a major international programmer while retaining its specialist action-sports identity.

Programming

The channel's programming is built around the full spectrum of extreme and adventure sports. Its schedules have featured event coverage and magazine programming on surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking, wakeboarding, motocross, climbing, base jumping and winter sports, alongside lifestyle programming that connects the sports to music, fashion and youth culture. The original concept positioned the channel as a direct challenger for the attention of teenagers and young adults, with radical sports and lifestyle content aimed at the 15 to 30-year-old market.

Beyond event coverage, the channel carries documentaries following athletes and expeditions, travel and adventure programming, and shows exploring the culture surrounding action sports. The programming is produced and acquired internationally, with the channel broadcasting in multiple languages across its European footprint, and its schedules are built to showcase dramatic visuals and high-adrenaline action around the clock.

Return to UK screens via streaming

After its removal from Sky at the end of 2015, the Extreme Sports Channel was absent from mainstream UK television platforms for several years before returning through streaming distribution. On 27 October 2021 the channel became available in the UK on Channelbox via Freeview channel 271. Channelbox is a free IPTV service available to Freeview-compatible devices that can connect to both an aerial and the internet, and it gave the channel a route back to British viewers without a traditional broadcast slot.

In June 2024 the company acquired its own streaming slot on Freeview under the name Extreme Channel on channel 295, giving it a dedicated presence in the Freeview line-up. In February 2025 the company decided to give up its separate Freeview slot in favour of distribution through Channelbox and a focus on its Extreme Plus streaming application, reflecting the wider shift of viewing toward app-based streaming.

The Extreme brand beyond television

The television channel sits within the wider Extreme brand, which the Extreme Group developed into a licensing and consumer products business. Extreme-branded businesses have covered drinks, retail, clothing, mobile services, pre-pay cards, travel, electronics, hotels and theme parks, built on the credibility and round-the-clock exposure that the television channel gave the brand. The group has employed hundreds of people and been represented in dozens of countries.

The brand's sustainability initiatives have included commitments around people, planet and place, with the company aligning its work with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, signing up to measurement and giving schemes and supporting sports-for-climate-action initiatives. The Extreme Hangout events platform reflects the brand's continued involvement in the action sports events world beyond television.

Position in sports broadcasting

The Extreme Sports Channel holds a pioneering place in sports television as the first channel in the world dedicated entirely to extreme and action sports. At its launch it created a television category that had not previously existed, giving sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding and BMX a dedicated broadcast home years before they gained Olympic recognition or mainstream sports coverage. Its youth-oriented, lifestyle-driven presentation influenced how action sports were televised.

Through its years on Sky and its current streaming distribution, the channel has served a specialist audience that mainstream sports channels have largely left to online video. Its longevity, more than 25 years on air in various forms, testifies to the enduring appeal of action sports programming and to the strength of the Extreme brand identity.

How to watch

In the United Kingdom the Extreme Sports Channel is currently available through Channelbox on Freeview channel 271, the free IPTV service for internet-connected Freeview devices, and through the Extreme Plus streaming application. Internationally the channel is carried by pay-television platforms in multiple European territories under AMC Networks International distribution, with localised feeds and multi-language broadcasting.

Viewers can find programme information through the Channelbox service and through the channel's online presence at extreme.com, which has served as the brand's internet portal since the channel's earliest days. Schedules cover surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking and the channel's full range of action and adventure sports.
