About Digpu News

Digpu News is a digital news platform publishing national and international news with original reporting, operating from its website digpu.com and backed by the Digpu News Network, a digital PR and news-distribution business. Founded in 2019 by Kunwar Devender Singh and based in Pune, Maharashtra, Digpu combines two related operations: a news portal covering current affairs, politics, technology, business, finance, health and entertainment, and a news network that publishes press releases and branded content for startups and MSMEs across a network of hundreds of digital publishers. Its slogan, coined by co-founder Cheshta Bakshi, is "Free Voice With A Critical Edge." The company has described itself as India's largest digital PR and news distribution company, and its network model — pairing journalism with content distribution — makes it an unusual hybrid in the Indian digital media landscape.

Founding and founder

Digpu News was founded in 2019 by Kunwar Devender Singh, who continues to lead the company as its founder. Company records list its address on Baner Road in Pune, Maharashtra, and describe a small core team of around ten people. The founding came at a time when India's digital media sector was expanding rapidly, with new outlets testing a variety of business models — advertising, subscriptions, events and, in Digpu's case, a blend of editorial publishing with paid content distribution. Singh has been the public face of the company, quoted in trade press on its partnerships and on its mission to give Indian startups and small businesses a voice in the media.

Digpu News Network

The Digpu News Network is the company's distribution arm: a network of more than 500 digital news publishers, including mainstream and regional outlets in India and abroad, through which the company distributes news articles and press releases. According to the company's own statements, in its first four years it developed and published news articles and press releases for more than 700 startups and MSMEs across industries including technology, education, health and cybersecurity. The network model works by introducing regional and niche news publishers to the PR domain: their journalistic work is promoted across partner websites, while paying clients get their announcements published across the network. The company has said it previously signed similar distribution arrangements with Indian mainstream outlets including Hindustan Times, News18, Mint, Moneycontrol, Forbes India and Firstpost.

Editorial coverage

On the editorial side, Digpu News publishes national and international news with original reporting across categories including current affairs, politics, technology, business, finance, health and entertainment. The site's sections include achievers' features — profiles of notable individuals such as awardees, athletes and public figures — alongside news coverage. The editorial operation is small, and its journalists cover beats including arts and entertainment, business and startup news. The combination of editorial content and network-distributed releases gives the site a high volume of published material spanning hard news, features and sponsored-style announcements.

The Khaleej Times partnership

One of Digpu's most publicised moves was its partnership with Khaleej Times, the UAE's longest-running English daily newspaper, founded in 1978. Announced in 2022, the alliance was aimed at boosting Indian food and agriculture exports to the UAE by enhancing the visibility of Indian brands in West Asian markets, with the company stating a goal of increasing Indian export size in the UAE market by 20–25 per cent within a year. The partnership was framed around APEDA — the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority under India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry — and reflected Digpu's positioning as a bridge between Indian businesses and international media exposure. The company said it would work on media initiatives for eligible entrepreneurs globally in addition to content distribution.

Defence startup collaboration

Digpu News Network also partnered with Potential Exhibitions and Media Marketing (PEMM), a company that connects Indian defence firms with international trade shows, to jointly explore PR and media opportunities for Indian defence startups. Announced in 2023, the collaboration was aimed at helping defence startups publish their research-and-development and product-related content across Digpu's news platform and its network of publishers, covering domains such as aerospace, land systems, naval technology, cyber, drones and homeland security. The partnership illustrated how Digpu's network model extends into specialised B2B sectors, offering niche industries a route to media visibility.

Business model

Digpu's business model rests on paid content distribution: startups, MSMEs and larger organisations pay to have their news and press releases published across the Digpu News Network's publisher network. This places the company in the digital PR segment rather than the pure-play journalism segment, though it maintains an editorial news portal alongside the distribution business. The model addresses a real market need — small companies struggle to get media coverage — while raising the familiar editorial questions that surround paid news distribution. Digpu's own framing is that it gives startups "a voice in the media domain," positioning distribution as a democratising service for businesses outside the metros and outside established media relationships.

Team and leadership

The company is led by founder Kunwar Devender Singh, with co-founder Cheshta Bakshi credited with giving Digpu its slogan, "Free Voice With A Critical Edge." Bakshi, an educator and researcher with experience in research, analysis and content writing — including two research papers on information and communication technology — has worked as a journalist with the Digpu News Network covering arts, entertainment, business and startup news. The core team is small, numbering around ten people, which is consistent with a network-aggregator model where much of the publishing volume comes from partner outlets rather than in-house staff.

Digital presence

Digpu News publishes at digpu.com, with the network business operating through network.digpu.com. The sites are published in English and target readers interested in Indian current affairs as well as the startup and business community that forms the company's client base. The company's public profile is maintained through trade-press coverage of its partnerships and through its own publishing activity. As a digital-native operation founded in 2019, it has no print legacy; its entire presence is online, distributed across its own domains and its partner publisher network.

Place in Indian digital media

Digpu occupies an unusual position in Indian digital media: part news portal, part PR distribution network. Pure-play news startups typically rely on advertising, subscriptions or philanthropy; Digpu instead monetises the distribution infrastructure itself, selling reach across hundreds of publishers to businesses that want coverage. The model reflects the blurring lines between journalism, marketing and PR in India's digital economy, where the same platforms often serve both readers and paying clients. Whether viewed as a media company with a PR arm or a PR company with a newsroom, Digpu's growth since 2019 shows there is a substantial market for organised digital news distribution in India. Its official website is digpu.com.

Debate around the model

Digpu's hybrid model — part newsroom, part paid distribution network — sits at the centre of an ongoing debate in Indian media about the boundaries between journalism, public relations and advertising. Supporters of the model argue that it democratises media access, giving small businesses and regional publishers visibility they could not otherwise afford, and that clearly functioning as a distribution service is more honest than disguised paid news. Critics of paid content distribution more broadly argue that mixing paid placements with editorial content risks confusing readers about what is journalism and what is marketing. Digpu's own framing emphasises empowerment: helping startups find a voice in the media domain. How readers and the industry ultimately judge such hybrids will shape the economics of India's digital news business in the years ahead. The company's continued growth since 2019 suggests the market, at least, sees value in what it offers.
