About Scotland Magazine

Scotland Magazine

Scotland Magazine is an international consumer magazine celebrating Scottish heritage, history, travel and culture, published six times a year and read by Scotland lovers in the UK and around the world. Launched in 2002 by Paragraph Publishing, it was sold in 2019 to The Chelsea Magazine Company of London, under whose ownership it continues to appear in print and digital editions, including on the Zinio platform. Every issue delves into the history of Scotland — from the mysterious clans to the great leaders, from creative individuals to the historical life of the country's greatest castles and houses — capturing the spirit of the nation and recommending great places to visit.

Launch by Paragraph Publishing

Scotland Magazine was launched by Paragraph Publishing in 2002 as an international consumer magazine "for all those who want to stay connected to their love of Scotland". Paragraph, founded in 1997, was an international publishing and events company specialising in drinks-related publications, including Whisky Magazine and Gin Magazine and their associated events and awards. The Scotland title was a natural extension of the company's interest in Scottish culture — whisky and Scotland travel being closely linked markets — and it sat alongside Paragraph's Scottish-interest publishing and events division for seventeen years.

Scotland's Best, Ireland's Best and the Scottish Hotel Awards

In addition to the flagship print product, Paragraph launched two annual publications — Scotland's Best and Ireland's Best — in 2017. These 116-page glossy annuals were distributed through WHSmith Travel in the UK and Barnes & Noble in the USA, extending the brand's reach to the large North American audience with Scottish ancestry. The Scottish Hotel Awards, founded in 2003 and purchased by Paragraph in 2012, were also part of the package: an annual membership scheme giving regional and national awards to the best members across 56 "Property" categories, 24 "People of Excellence" categories and 8 "Grand Awards". Together these assets formed a coherent Scottish-interest media and events business.

Sale to The Chelsea Magazine Company

In July 2019, MediaFund announced the sale of Scotland Magazine, Scotland's Best, Ireland's Best and the Scottish Hotel Awards — the assets of Paragraph Publishing's Scottish-interest division — to The Chelsea Magazine Company. Damian Riley-Smith, Paragraph's founder and CEO, said he was sure Chelsea would be "the perfect home for these assets and will be able to continue the work we have begun", and that the sale would allow Paragraph to focus further on its drinks portfolio. The Chelsea Magazine Company, based in London, is a publisher of specialist magazines whose brands fall into three portfolios: Travel & Leisure, Lifestyle & Parenting, and Specialist Sports. Scotland Magazine fits naturally within its Travel & Leisure stable.

Announcing the deal, Paragraph founder and CEO Damian Riley-Smith thanked MediaFund's Piers and Joe, who he said were "integral in calming nerves and keeping the deal on the straight and narrow", and expressed his confidence that Chelsea would be the perfect home for the assets. MediaFund is a specialist mergers-and-acquisitions broker in the media and publishing sector, and the transaction transferred the whole of Paragraph's Scottish-interest publishing and events division in a single sale.

Editorial content

Published six times a year, every issue of Scotland Magazine delves into the history of Scotland: from the mysterious clans to the great leaders, from spirited creative individuals to the historical life of Scotland's greatest castles and houses. Filled with the country's hidden secrets, the magazine captures the spirit of the nation, explores its history and heritage, and recommends great places to visit. Recent issues illustrate the formula: the July–August 2025 edition carried an editor's letter describing two journeys to the isles — Rosie Conroy's Hebridean Way trip from Barra to Lewis, highlighting food and drink producers along the way, and a visit to Mull in search of calm amid lovely landscapes, quiet settlements and long, empty beaches. The May/June 2026 issue opened with "Notes from the Isles", including a Burns Night supper account complete with the Address to the Haggis.

Readership and the diaspora

Scotland Magazine is explicitly an international title, aimed at readers who want to stay connected to their love of Scotland wherever they live. Muck Rack's verified outlet listing classifies it as a national consumer magazine, published in English and appearing bimonthly. Its audience includes the Scottish diaspora — particularly in North America, where Scottish ancestry runs deep and where the annuals were distributed through Barnes & Noble — as well as travellers planning visits and heritage enthusiasts within Scotland itself. The diaspora angle gives the magazine a distinctive emotional register: it is as much about belonging and identity as it is about travel planning.

Print, digital and the website

The magazine continues in print, available by subscription and through retail, and in digital editions on platforms including Zinio, where recent issues such as July–August 2025 and May/June 2026 are listed with their full contents. Its website, scotlandmag.com, is owned by The Chelsea Magazine Company Limited and serves as the brand's online home. The combination of a flagship bimonthly, annual spin-offs and a web presence gives the title multiple touchpoints with its audience — a structure that has helped specialist print magazines survive the digital transition by serving readers who value the physical object as well as the content, and who return issue after issue for their connection to Scotland.

Position in the heritage magazine market

Scotland Magazine operates in the crowded but resilient heritage and travel magazine sector, where titles succeed by serving a passionate, defined audience rather than chasing mass circulation. Scotland's magazine market is substantial — over 700 magazines are published in Scotland by nearly 200 organisations — but Scotland Magazine is published from London, distinguishing it from Scottish-produced titles such as The Scots Magazine (first published in 1739 and still going) and Scottish Field (established 1903). Its international, diaspora-facing positioning complements rather than competes directly with those titles, and its heritage-travel formula — clans, castles, isles, whisky country — remains perennially popular with its readership.

The Chelsea Magazine Company era

Under The Chelsea Magazine Company, Scotland Magazine has continued its bimonthly schedule into 2026, with issues appearing on Zinio and the brand maintained online at scotlandmag.com. Chelsea's ownership brought the title into a larger stable of specialist magazines, giving it the backing of an established independent publisher while preserving its distinct Scottish-heritage identity. The continuity of publication — more than two decades since the 2002 launch, through a change of ownership — speaks to the durability of the heritage magazine model when it is matched to a genuinely devoted readership.

Outlook

As it moves through its third decade, Scotland Magazine remains what Paragraph set out to create in 2002: an international consumer magazine for everyone who wants to stay connected to their love of Scotland. Its formula of history, heritage, hidden secrets and places to visit has proven remarkably stable, and its diaspora readership gives it a base that transcends the ups and downs of the UK newsstand. In a media landscape where many print titles have disappeared, Scotland Magazine's survival — and its continued bimonthly rhythm under Chelsea ownership — marks it as one of the enduring successes of British specialist magazine publishing. Recent issues listed on Zinio, including May/June 2026, confirm the title's continued bimonthly rhythm well into its twenty-fifth year.
