Raj Musix Malayalam
Raj Musix Malayalam is a Malayalam-language music television channel owned by Raj Television Network Limited, the Chennai-based broadcaster. The channel airs Malayalam film songs and music programming, and forms part of the network's Malayalam portfolio alongside the news channel Raj News Malayalam. Its formal launch is dated to 2018, though test transmissions and early operations trace back further, and the channel underwent a significant revamp in August 2022 alongside the launch of its news sibling.
Overview
Raj Musix Malayalam is a music channel dedicated to Malayalam songs — primarily film music from the Malayalam cinema industry, supplemented by music-based programming. The channel broadcasts in standard definition and is available on direct-to-home and cable platforms serving Kerala and Malayali audiences. Like the other channels in the Raj Musix family — Raj Musix (Tamil, launched 2004), Raj Musix Kannada (2009), and Raj Musix Telugu (2013) — it targets youth and music-loving audiences with a mix of songs and anchor-driven shows.
The channel's programming has included music blocks, song compilations, and programmes such as Music Mojo, with content also distributed through the Hippo Prime Music YouTube channel associated with the network's Malayalam operations.
Early History and Test Transmissions
Raj Musix Malayalam's path to a formal launch was gradual. Satellite tracking records show the channel on air as early as February 2016, when it appeared on the Badr 6 satellite at 26 degrees East — a slot serving the Middle East, home to a large Malayali diaspora. That transmission went off air in July 2018, the same year the channel is formally listed as having launched.
The channel was carried on India's direct-to-home platforms during this period: Videocon d2h added Raj Musix Malayalam to its Malayalam bouquet, placing it on channel number 625, adjacent to Surya Music. Kerala television trackers from around 2016 noted that the channel was operating with limited content — around two hours of fresh programming daily — and that the network had conducted a VJ hunt to staff the channel, signalling plans for anchor-driven programming.
Industry forum discussions from 2018 describe the channel building its song library — adding older Malayalam songs and expanding its playlist — while repeating content as it developed its full schedule, a common pattern for newly launched music channels working with limited libraries.
The 2022 Revamp
On 17 August 2022, alongside the launch of Raj News Malayalam, Raj Musix Malayalam underwent a logo launch and revamp. The event marked a fresh start for the music channel, which was repositioned with new branding and programming plans. Reports from the time indicated that the revamped channel would launch with serials, music programmes, and films, and that its operations would be run from the network's Edappally office in Kochi.
The revamp was associated with Hippo Prime Media, the production company that was handling the launch of Raj News Malayalam. The parent company's team started a YouTube channel under the name Hippo Prime Music, posting programmes such as Music Mojo — content aligned with the revamped music channel's output. One company representative confirmed at the time that Raj Musix would relaunch with expanded programming.
However, the revamp's aftermath proved challenging. Industry accounts from 2023–2024 reported that the music channel was struggling, having failed to attract advertising revenue — a persistent difficulty for smaller music channels competing against entrenched players in the Kerala market.
Programming
Raj Musix Malayalam's schedule centres on Malayalam film songs — the backbone of music television in Kerala, where cinema music dominates popular listening. The channel has aired song blocks spanning contemporary hits and older classics, with forum observers noting additions of evergreen songs to its rotation during its development phase.
Music-based programming has included shows such as Music Mojo, distributed both on the channel and via the Hippo Prime Music YouTube presence. The network's earlier plans for the channel included VJ-hosted segments, following the model of the Tamil Raj Musix, which at its 2004 launch featured programmes including viewer phone-ins, celebrity profiles, and cultural coverage.
Raj Television Network: The Parent Company
Raj Musix Malayalam is owned by Raj Television Network Limited, a publicly listed company (BSE: 532826, NSE: RAJTV) headquartered in Chennai. Established on 3 June 1994 with the launch of the Tamil channel Raj TV on 14 October 1994, the network is one of South India's oldest independent broadcasting groups.
The group's roots lie in Raj Video Vision, a video cassette lending company established in 1983 by four brothers, which began acquiring Tamil film rights in 1984 and opened the Rajendra integrated studio in 1987. The studio was used by independent producers and to export films and teleserials to Singapore, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and the UAE.
The network's music channel lineage began with the Tamil Raj Musix, launched on 23 January 2004 as a youth-oriented music and lifestyle channel. At its launch, network director M. Ravindran described it as "a youth-based music and lifestyle channel" with programming different in content and presentation, featuring shows such as En-maname, SMS Your Star of the Week, ATM (All Time Music), Cine Walk, In-focus, and Chennai Mail, alongside Tamil, Indipop, English, and Bollywood music. Raj Musix Malayalam extends this music-channel template to the Malayalam audience.
The Malayalam Music Television Market
Malayalam music television is a competitive segment shaped by Kerala's deep cinema-music culture. The channel competes with established music outlets including Kappa TV (Mathrubhumi group's youth and music channel), Surya Music (Sun Group), and music programming blocks on general entertainment channels. YouTube has also become a dominant platform for Malayalam music consumption, intensifying the pressure on linear music channels.
For smaller music channels, the economics are demanding: building a comprehensive song library requires licensing deals with music labels, while advertising revenue in the music genre is limited compared to general entertainment and news. Raj Musix Malayalam's reported struggles with advertising reflect these structural challenges.
Distribution
Raj Musix Malayalam has been carried on direct-to-home platforms, including Videocon d2h (channel 625 in its Malayalam bouquet) and, through the network's distribution arrangements, other DTH operators. The channel has also been available on cable networks in Kerala. An early satellite presence on Badr 6 served the Gulf diaspora audience before that transmission ended in 2018. The network operates its own OTT service through which its channels can be streamed online.
Digital and YouTube Presence
Alongside its television broadcast, Raj Musix Malayalam's content has been distributed through YouTube — including the Hippo Prime Music channel, which posted programmes such as Music Mojo during the 2022 revamp period. This digital extension reflects the broader shift of music consumption to online platforms, where Malayalam film songs command enormous audiences.
Significance
Raj Musix Malayalam represents Raj Television Network's long-running effort to build a Malayalam music presence — from early test transmissions in 2016 through its formal 2018 launch to the ambitious 2022 revamp. Its history illustrates both the opportunities and the difficulties facing regional music channels: a large, music-loving audience on one side, and the challenges of library building, advertising, and digital competition on the other.
As part of a network whose music channels span Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, Raj Musix Malayalam carries forward a template pioneered by the Tamil Raj Musix in 2004 — youth-oriented, song-driven television adapted to the musical culture of Kerala.
