Founded on February 6, 1919 by Harry L. Watson through the merger of the Greenwood Evening Index and the Daily Journal, it has remained family-owned by Greenwood families since its founding. One of South Carolina's last family-owned daily newspapers, it publishes seven days a week for Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, and Saluda counties.
