About Law360 UK

Law360 UK

Law360 UK is the British arm of Law360, the subscription legal newswire owned by LexisNexis, providing daily legal news, court reporting and practice-area intelligence to law firms, in-house counsel and legal media in the United Kingdom. Law360 expanded its newsroom to the UK in 2016, offering coverage for legal professionals in areas including commercial litigation, corporate crime and compliance, financial services, insurance, transactions and employment, together with business-of-law coverage under the Pulse name. In January 2023 it unveiled a dedicated UK edition of Law360 Pulse, bringing its data-driven coverage of law firm finances, leadership, lateral moves, compensation and legal technology to the British market, launched alongside its first UK Lawyer Satisfaction Survey. The parent service traces its origins to a daily intellectual property newsletter begun in 2003, the launch of Law360 in 2006, and its acquisition by RELX for the LexisNexis offering in 2012. From its London bureau, Law360 UK applies that American-born, high-velocity news model to British courts and the City legal market.

Parent Origins: From IP Newsletter to Law360

Law360's history begins in the United States. In 2003, Marius Meland, founder of Portfolio Media, began publishing a daily online newsletter on intellectual property law. In 2004 Meland partnered with Magnus Hoglund, expanding coverage into other legal practice areas and launching Law360 itself in 2006. The insight behind the service was that lawyers needed news organised the way they practised — by practice area, industry and jurisdiction — delivered fast, written by specialist reporters who covered courts and regulators as a beat, and searchable as a professional tool rather than read as a general newspaper. Law360 grew into one of the fastest-growing subscription news services in the United States, with subscribers including the largest American law firms, in-house counsel at major corporations and decision-makers in government. Its newsroom model — many specialist reporters, short factual stories filed through the day, newsletters assembled by practice area — is the template that the UK operation inherited.

Acquisition by LexisNexis

In 2012, Law360 was acquired by RELX to become part of the LexisNexis offering. The acquisition placed a breaking-news wire inside one of the world's largest legal information companies, alongside LexisNexis's databases of case law, legislation and commentary. For Law360, LexisNexis ownership brought the distribution, sales force and product integration of a global legal information group; for LexisNexis, Law360 brought the one thing a database company cannot build from archives — a live newsroom. The combination has deepened over time. In June 2022 LexisNexis enhanced its Lexis+ Legal News Hub by adding MLex and practice-specific Law360 Authority content and expanding the hub to Lexis+ users in the UK, describing the move as the first time it had brought together its two premier news acquisitions, Law360 and MLex, in a single news experience with an improved interface. Law360 UK therefore reaches its readers both as a standalone subscription newswire and as content embedded in the Lexis+ research environment British lawyers use for their legal work.

Expansion to the United Kingdom in 2016

In 2016, Law360 expanded its newsroom to the UK, offering daily news coverage for legal professionals in commercial litigation, corporate crime and compliance, financial services, insurance, transactions, employment and legal industry coverage under the Pulse name. The expansion recognised that London is one of the world's two great legal capitals: home to global law firms, the Commercial Court and a concentration of financial services litigation and regulatory work that generates news of interest far beyond Britain. A London bureau also allowed Law360 to follow matters that run across the Atlantic — the same fraud, cartel, sanctions or mass claim story often produces proceedings in both New York and London — with reporters in both cities working for one service. Job descriptions for the London bureau describe editors editing news stories and features, writing headlines, line editing, fact checking and reviewing newsletters in the evenings before publication, within a global organisation whose offices include New York, London, Washington DC and Los Angeles.

What Law360 UK Covers

The UK service is organised around the practice areas in which British business lawyers work. Commercial litigation coverage follows claims, judgments and procedural battles in the High Court and appellate courts. Corporate crime and compliance reporting covers fraud, bribery, sanctions and regulatory enforcement. Financial services coverage tracks the regulators and the disputes of the City. Insurance, transactions and employment each have dedicated coverage of cases, deals, legislation and enforcement. Woven through the practice coverage is reporting on the legal industry itself — the firms, their finances and their people. Subscribers receive the flow as a customisable feed, with daily newsletters by practice area and alerts that can be set for the topics, courts and companies a lawyer follows. The directory listing for Law360 UK describes it as a LexisNexis-owned legal newswire providing daily UK legal news, court reporting and practice-area intelligence to law firms and legal media, which matches the service's own account of its work.

Law360 Pulse UK and the Business of Law

On 30 and 31 January 2023, Law360 unveiled the UK edition of Law360 Pulse, describing it as a data-driven, customisable legal news platform bringing business-of-law coverage and insights to UK legal professionals. Pulse, launched in the United States in January 2021, covers the legal industry itself: law firm finances, leadership and lateral moves, compensation, government regulation, legal technology, legal ethics and disruption in the market, together with in-house counsel executive moves, legal operations and the court developments that affect litigators. The UK launch material said Pulse would give legal professionals and their communications and business development teams what they need to stay on top of legal issues and trends, safeguard clients and sharpen their competitive edge, with a focus on large and medium-sized firms, in-house counsel, courts and litigation. Readers can customise their Pulse feed, sign up for daily newsletters and set alerts. With Pulse, Law360 UK is not only reporting the law for lawyers but reporting the legal business to the people who run it — a second editorial franchise alongside the practice-area wire.

Surveys and Data Journalism

Pulse brought with it a programme of data-driven surveys and rankings, which in the United States includes the Diversity Snapshot, the Glass Ceiling Report on women in law, a Lawyer Satisfaction Survey, a Partner Compensation Survey and a Summer Associates Survey. The UK edition launched with its inaugural Lawyer Satisfaction Survey, giving insights into how UK lawyers feel about compensation, billable hour targets and opportunities for advancement. Reported findings from that first survey included that three-quarters of respondents rated their current financial stability as average or poor, nearly two-thirds reported feeling stressed about their financial situation at least sometimes, and more than a third said their work-life balance had worsened over the past year. Such surveys serve several purposes at once: they are news in themselves, they are cited by other legal media, and they give the Pulse brand a proprietary data identity distinct from daily news. They also mark Law360 UK as a producer of original research about the profession, not merely a reporter of its cases.

The Authority Products and the Wider Law360 Family

Law360 UK sits within a family of products that has expanded by launching vertical services: Law360 Tax Authority in June 2018, covering federal, state, local and international tax; Employment Authority in December 2020, covering labour, discrimination and wage and hour matters; Insurance Authority in September 2021; and Real Estate Authority in June 2022, covering commercial and residential real estate trends, deals, litigation and policy. These Authority products deliver daily features, special series and forward-looking analysis alongside news, and their content reaches UK readers through the Lexis+ Legal News Hub alongside MLex's regulatory reporting on antitrust, mergers, data privacy, financial crime, trade and sector regulation. For a British subscriber, the practical result is a single environment in which a piece of UK litigation news, an Authority analysis of its practice implications and an MLex report on the regulatory background can be read together — the integration LexisNexis described in 2022 as a richer, more seamless news experience for its US and UK customers.

Audience and Working Role

Law360 UK's subscribers are the institutions of the British legal market: City and national law firms, chambers and in-house legal departments, together with the communications and business development teams inside those firms, who use Pulse coverage of lateral hires, firm finances and market trends as competitive intelligence. For practising lawyers, the wire's value is speed and specificity — a judgment, filing or regulatory decision in their practice area, reported by a specialist, in their inbox the same day, without having to sift general news. For the wider legal media, Law360 functions as a wholesale agency in the classic sense: its court reporting and industry stories are a source that other legal publications monitor, follow and cite, and its surveys provide ready-made data stories for the legal press. Its official UK website is law360.co.uk. The London bureau's evening newsletter workflow, described in its own recruitment material, reflects the wire's discipline: the day's British legal news, edited and assembled for delivery to subscribers who will read it as part of the next working day's preparation.

Why Law360 UK Matters

Law360 UK matters because it imported a proven, high-volume legal newswire model into the British market and then localised it twice over: first with practice-area coverage of UK courts, regulators and deals from 2016, and then with the UK edition of Pulse in 2023, which turned the lens on the British legal business itself, complete with its own survey data. Backed by LexisNexis since the 2012 acquisition of its parent, and integrated into Lexis+ alongside MLex, it combines the two assets modern legal information is built from — primary legal materials and live specialist journalism — in one subscription. For a directory of news agencies, Law360 UK is the clearest example in the legal sector of the wire model applied to a profession: reporters on beats, copy filed to deadlines, newsletters by specialism, and an audience that pays because the news arrives before, and in more usable form than, anywhere else.
