About Yo Vizag

Yo Vizag: Visakhapatnam's First City Magazine, Now a Digital City Portal

Yo Vizag — styled Yo! Vizag — is a Visakhapatnam-focused publication that began as the city's first city magazine and now operates as a digital portal covering the life of the port city in Andhra Pradesh. Published in English, it reports and features Visakhapatnam's news, food, lifestyle, travel and events, chronicling a city it has followed since its first edition in March 2008. Its website, yovizag.com, carries the magazine's city-first mission into daily online publishing for residents and for the large number of Vizagites living elsewhere.

Few Indian cities of Visakhapatnam's size have a publication so entirely devoted to them. Yo Vizag was created to give the city a brand image of its own — to showcase its hidden assets, its lifestyle and its tourism potential — and that founding purpose still shapes everything it publishes.

Founded in 2008 by Shilpanjani Dantu

Yo Vizag debuted in March 2008. It was founded by Shilpanjani Dantu, who wanted to start a magazine that would feature the hidden assets of the city and showcase Vizag — the City of Destiny — at its best. Dantu remains identified with the publication as its founder and editor. The founding idea was explicit: to give a brand image to the city, expose its vibrant lifestyle, throw light on its multicultural aspects and emphasise its tourism potential.

The first edition, released in March 2008, featured actress Tamannaah Bhatia on its cover. A business listing for the magazine dates the enterprise to 2007, the year of its preparation, with the domain for its website also registered in October 2007 ahead of the print launch. Its headquarters are at CBM Compound in Visakhapatnam, the address from which the magazine has operated through its life.

The Celebrity Cover Years and the Editorial Makeover

In its earlier years, Yo Vizag had an appreciable share of glamour. Successive covers featured prominent film personalities and celebrities — among them Sayali Bhagat, Amrita Rao, Minissha Lamba, Shriya Saran, Charmee, Genelia D'Souza, Mamta Mohandas, Rana Daggubati, Kajal Aggarwal and Bindu Madhavi — positioning the young magazine within the glamorous register of Indian lifestyle publishing.

Later, the magazine made a deliberate editorial shift. Its covers moved away from visiting celebrities to images actually shot in the city, featuring its own populace. That paradigm change in editorial policy gave the magazine a makeover and allowed it to carve a niche for itself as a publication of and about Visakhapatnam rather than merely published there. The shift captures the magazine's maturing identity: the city itself became the cover star.

Columns That Define the Magazine

Yo Vizag's identity was built through its regular columns. Its contents over the years have included Eminent Vizagite, profiling distinguished figures of the city; Vizagites at Work, on the professional lives of its residents; Voice of Vizag, a platform for the city's own views; Party Pages, recording its social scene; and Discover Vizag, exploring the city's places and possibilities, along with special tourism editions.

These franchises explain the magazine's hold on its readers. A Vizagite profile or a workplace feature turns ordinary residents into the city's documented personalities, and the tourism editions package the city's beaches, hills and heritage for visitors. Readwhere, the digital newsstand that carried the e-magazine, described it as highlighting the hitherto unknown aspects and people of the city — a fair summary of the column formula.

Recognition: Outlook and the 100th Edition

The magazine's standing was recognised nationally early in its life. Outlook magazine, in its February 2011 edition, noted Yo Vizag as the first city magazine of Visakhapatnam, on whose pages the richest and most prominent people of the city hoped to be featured. For a young city title, that notice in one of India's leading news magazines marked it out as a publishing experiment that had worked.

Longevity brought its own milestones. The magazine's 100th edition appeared in November 2016, an issue that celebrated local achievers alongside the city's eminent voices from past issues. Its readership was put at more than 50,000, and the e-magazine was sold monthly at Rs. 40 an issue through digital newsstands. The magazine is also described as being used by multinational corporations setting up in Visakhapatnam to help persuade employees to live and work in the city — a striking measure of how completely it had become the city's showcase.

From Monthly Magazine to Daily Digital Portal

Yo Vizag's present form is a digital portal, yovizag.com, which extends the magazine's brief into daily publishing. The website covers Visakhapatnam city news in real time, Andhra Pradesh state politics and infrastructure developments such as the Bhogapuram airport project, and community events, keeping residents and non-resident Vizagites informed. The monthly magazine's feature sensibility survives in the portal's longer reads, but the rhythm is now that of a news site.

The transition mirrors the path of city magazines everywhere: print built the brand and the trust, while digital provides the frequency and reach. For Yo Vizag, the digital form also solves the diaspora problem — a printed city magazine could never reach former residents abroad, while the portal is read wherever Vizagites have settled.

What the Portal Covers: News, Food, Travel and Lifestyle

The portal's coverage spans the whole experience of the city. Its travel writing presents Visakhapatnam's signature circuit — RK Beach, the INS Kursura Submarine Museum and the TU 142 aircraft museum, Kailasagiri, the Simhachalam temple and Rushikonda Beach with its Blue Flag certification — along with excursions to Araku Valley and the Borra Caves, and practical guidance such as the city's hop-on hop-off bus service and the October-to-March season as the best time to visit.

Food is a dedicated strand, from muri mixture on RK Beach and bamboo chicken from the nearby hills to Andhra thalis and the city's café culture. Lifestyle coverage follows festivals such as Visakha Utsav, classical dance and craft events, and the changing social scene of the city, while entertainment coverage tracks Tollywood, Bollywood and OTT releases and the film shoots taking place in and around Visakhapatnam. News, food, travel and lifestyle together reproduce, in daily digital form, the original magazine's promise to show the city at its best.

The City It Chronicles

Visakhapatnam — Vizag — is one of Andhra Pradesh's largest cities and one of India's great port cities, known for its natural harbour, its steel plant and shipyard, its naval presence and its growing information technology sector, set between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal. It is a city whose economy and identity have repeatedly been reshaped — by industry, by the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, and by its recurring role in debates over the state's capital.

A city publication in such a place is more than a lifestyle accessory. As Vizag negotiates infrastructure projects, tourism growth and administrative change, Yo Vizag's news coverage gives residents a city-focused record, while its features maintain the civic self-image the magazine was founded to build.

Standing in Andhra Pradesh Media

Within Andhra Pradesh's media landscape — dominated by large Telugu newspapers and television channels — Yo Vizag occupies a category of its own: an English-language city publication devoted to a single city, in print monthly for years and now publishing daily online. Its first-mover status as Visakhapatnam's first city magazine, its nationally noticed early years, its 100-edition print run and its readership measured in tens of thousands make it a small but distinctive institution.

For readers, its value is simple to state. State media cover Vizag as one dateline among many; Yo Vizag covers it as home. Since March 2008 it has chronicled the port city's people, places, food and ambitions, and its digital portal continues that chronicle for a new generation of residents and for Vizagites around the world.
