Vikalpa: The Journal for Decision Makers of IIM Ahmedabad
Vikalpa, published under its fuller title Vikalpa: The Journal for Decision Makers, is the quarterly management journal of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Established in January 1976 and published by SAGE Publishing on behalf of the institute, it is one of India's longest-running peer-reviewed journals devoted to management research and practice. Its very subtitle signals its intended audience: not only academics who produce management knowledge, but also the decision makers — managers, administrators and policy makers — who are expected to use that knowledge inside organisations. In English, with print ISSN 0256-0909 and online ISSN 2395-3799, the journal has maintained uninterrupted publication for five decades, building an archive that traces how Indian management thought has developed from the mid-1970s to the present.
Origins at IIM Ahmedabad
Vikalpa appeared fifteen years after its parent institute was founded. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was established on 11 December 1961, founded by Vikram Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai with support from the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the Ford Foundation, and set up in collaboration with Harvard Business School. Ravi J. Matthai served as its first director. The institute was later declared an Institute of National Importance under the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017. A journal was a natural extension of that founding ambition: if IIMA existed to professionalise management in a newly industrialising India, it also needed a platform where Indian managerial problems could be studied, debated and documented in print, rather than discussed only through imported textbooks and cases drawn from other economies.
A Quarterly Peer-Reviewed Journal Since 1976
Vikalpa was established in January 1976 and has been published quarterly ever since. That continuity matters in Indian academic publishing, where many institute journals have appeared irregularly or folded. Bibliometric studies of the journal have counted its output across decades — one scientometric analysis covering 1976 to 2013 recorded 885 articles over 38 years, with publication volume increasing in the later period. Today the journal is described by its publisher as a quarterly peer-reviewed open access journal, and recent issues continue to appear online through SAGE, with research articles, review articles and other contributions published first online ahead of their issue. The move to open access has widened the journal's reach well beyond subscribing libraries, allowing practitioners and students anywhere to read its full text without a paywall.
What Vikalpa Publishes
The journal adopts a broad view of the management discipline and organises its content into distinct formats, each with a different purpose. Research articles are expected to make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in management or allied disciplines, whether theoretical or empirical, and whether using qualitative or quantitative methods; the recommended length is up to 8,000 words. Perspectives articles synthesise knowledge in a specific sub-field and offer lessons for practitioners and policy makers, typically calling for action or rethinking, and need not be based on original field research; their recommended length is up to 6,000 words. This deliberate mix means a single issue can combine rigorous empirical work with reflective essays aimed squarely at the practising manager.
Cases, Colloquia and Book Reviews
Beyond research and perspectives, Vikalpa has long published management cases, colloquia and book reviews. Cases cover sub-disciplines such as business strategy, marketing, finance, and organisational behaviour and human resources, run to about 3,000 words excluding a detailed teaching note, and require the author's explicit written permission from the organisation involved — a rule that reflects the journal's Ahmedabad roots in case-method teaching. The Colloquium format stages an intensive debate among stakeholders on a contemporary management issue, engaging academia, practitioners, policy makers and civil society so readers can see the different facets of a problem. Book reviews offer short assessments, of around 2,000 words, of recently released titles in management and allied disciplines. Earlier decades also featured sections such as Interfaces, Notes and Commentaries, Diagnoses and Abstracts, showing how the format has evolved while retaining its multi-format character.
Subject Coverage Across Management
Analyses of Vikalpa's archive show articles spread across the full range of management areas: general management, accounting and control, agriculture and rural development, communication, economics, finance, global management, information technology and systems, innovation and entrepreneurship, marketing, organisational behaviour and human resource development, strategic management and leadership, public systems, and operations management. Research articles have historically formed the largest share of published content, followed by perspectives and management cases. That breadth is consistent with the journal's stated position: it is a general management journal rather than a specialist title, and its natural home is an institute whose faculty work across all of these fields. For readers, the breadth means Vikalpa functions as a cross-disciplinary window on Indian management research rather than a narrow technical outlet.
Indexing, Metrics and Standing
Vikalpa is abstracted and indexed in EBSCO databases, ProQuest databases and Scopus, which places it within the indexing systems that Indian universities and accreditation processes rely on when evaluating faculty publications. Its SCImago profile has recorded an h-index of 37, reflecting a body of articles that continue to be cited long after publication. Indexing is not a mere technical detail for a journal of this kind: for doctoral scholars and faculty at Indian business schools, publication in a Scopus-indexed, peer-reviewed quarterly carries weight in hiring, promotion and accreditation, and Vikalpa's five-decade presence in those databases is part of why it remains a sought-after venue despite the growth of international alternatives.
The Decision-Maker Audience
The phrase "for Decision Makers" in the journal's title is more than branding. Vikalpa's formats are explicitly designed to connect researchers with people who run organisations. Perspectives pieces are framed as syntheses offering valuable lessons to management practitioners and policy makers, and colloquia deliberately bring practitioners and policy makers into the same pages as academics. The journal's own description of its purpose stresses that a healthy mix of article formats promotes deeper and more meaningful engagement among academia, practitioners, policy makers and civil society. In a management ecosystem where academic journals are often criticised for speaking only to other academics, Vikalpa's structure is a standing attempt to keep the conversation two-way, carrying field evidence into scholarship and scholarly synthesis back into boardrooms and ministries.
Editorial Stewardship and the SAGE Partnership
Vikalpa is published by SAGE Publishing on behalf of IIM Ahmedabad, with the journal's editorial office based at the institute. The editor named in the journal's current bibliographic record is Joshy Jacob. The editorial operation involves the full production cycle of a quarterly — editing and proofreading manuscripts, managing communication with authors and referees, liaising with the publisher on production, marketing and development, handling subscriptions and distribution, and organising manuscript development workshops under the editor's guidance. That workshop activity is significant: it signals a developmental role, helping authors — particularly younger Indian scholars — shape manuscripts to the standard a peer-reviewed journal requires, rather than simply accepting or rejecting what arrives.
Place Among India's IIM Journals
India's leading management institutes each sustain a flagship journal, and Vikalpa sits in that company alongside titles such as IIMB Management Review from Bengaluru and the IIM Lucknow journal Metamorphosis. At a 2016 meeting of Fellow Programme alumni at IIMA, participants even discussed whether the top three IIMs might collaborate on world-class journals, with Vikalpa named as Ahmedabad's contribution to that conversation. Vikalpa's distinction within the group is its age and its Ahmedabad lineage: founded in 1976, it is among the earliest management journals published by an Indian institute, and it carries the imprint of an institute closely associated with the case method and with close engagement between faculty and Indian industry.
Vikalpa Today
Today Vikalpa continues as a quarterly, peer-reviewed, open access journal in English, published by SAGE on behalf of IIM Ahmedabad from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Its recent online output — research and review articles published through SAGE Journals in 2024, 2025 and into 2026 — shows a title still actively commissioning and publishing new work in its fiftieth year. For management scholars it remains a recognised, Scopus-indexed Indian venue; for practitioners it remains what its subtitle promises, a journal written for decision makers; and for the institute it remains a durable record of five decades of Indian management thinking, from the concerns of a licence-era economy to those of a digital, globally integrated one. Few Indian academic magazines can claim that span, and Vikalpa's continuity is itself a central part of its identity.
