About The Nursing Journal of India

The Nursing Journal of India

The Nursing Journal of India is the journal of the Trained Nurses' Association of India, published from the association's headquarters in New Delhi. It began publication in 1910,which makes it the oldest nursing journal in India — a professional periodical that has now been appearing for well over a century, through the late colonial period, independence and the entire modern development of nursing as an organised profession in the country. For generations of Indian nurses,it has served as the official organ of their national association and as the main link between the association's members, its headquarters and its state branches.

Founding and Early Years

The journal was founded in 1910 by the Trained Nurses' Association of India, which had itself been established only two years earlier,in 1908. It began as a monthly periodical. Those first years were not easy. A reflective piece titled "The Concept of NJI," written by M. E. Butcher and printed in the journal's February 1912 issue, looked back candidly at the struggle to fill its pages: only a handful of individuals were doing their utmost to supply original articles, reports and letters, and the editor described coming within days of a blank journal and writing frantically to doctor friends to produce material. That the official organ survived those beginnings — and that its editor already felt it would be a pity to lay it down once it was on its feet — captures both the fragility and the determination of early Indian nursing publishing.

The Publishing Association

The Trained Nurses' Association of India, known universally as TNAI,was founded in 1908 with the purpose of upholding the dignity of the nursing profession and nurturing the professional, economic, educational and general welfare of all nurses. It was registered in 1917 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. In 1925 it became the amalgamation of the Association of Nursing Superintendents of India — an earlier body founded at Lucknow in 1905 — and the Association of Trained Nurses. The Student Nurses' Association followed in 1929. Alongside the journal,TNAI brings out books on nursing practice and nursing education, and the journal's role within the association has been described as its principal channel of communication on all important matters between members, headquarters and the state branches.

Frequency and Format

Although The Nursing Journal of India began as a monthly,it later became a bimonthly publication, appearing in February,April,June,August,October and December each year. Publisher listings describe a journal of 48 pages including eight colour pages, published by TNAI Headquarters in New Delhi. Over such a long life the journal has inevitably changed in design and production, but its identity has remained constant: an English-language professional journal, owned by a membership association rather than a commercial publisher, addressed to practising nurses, nurse educators, researchers and administrators across India.

Aims and Scope

The journal's stated aim is to promote excellence in nursing practice, education, research and policy development in the context of the Indian healthcare system. It provides a platform on which nurses, educators, researchers and administrators can disseminate their knowledge, experiences and innovative practices,to enhance the quality of nursing care and contribute to the advancement of nursing as a profession in India. In practice that means its pages carry the concerns of the whole profession — clinical practice, nursing education, administration and research — written largely by Indian practitioners for Indian conditions,at a time when much professional literature still arrived from abroad.

A Century of Professional History

The journal's longevity means it has run in parallel with nearly every milestone in Indian nursing. It was already appearing when state nursing councils began to be formed in the 1920s,when the Indian Nursing Council was established at the end of 1947 to set a uniform standard of training for nurses, midwives and health visitors, when the first four-year bachelor's programmes in nursing were founded in the 1940s,and when a nursing adviser to the Government of India was first appointed in 1956. Standard histories of nursing in India mark 1910 — "The Nursing Journal of India published" — as one of the foundational dates of the profession, listed alongside the founding of the associations themselves. Few journals can claim to be primary sources for the history of their own profession; this one can.

Other milestones in that shared history fill its background: state nursing councils were formed in Madras in 1926 to provide standards and guidelines for nursing education and training; the Rockefeller Foundation set up seven health centres in 1931 in Delhi,Madras,Bangalore,Lucknow,Trivandrum,Calcutta and Pune; and the four-year bachelor's programme in nursing established in 1946 at the Christian Medical College,Vellore and in Delhi marked the arrival of degree-level nursing education in India. The journal chronicled a profession that was, step by step, acquiring councils, degrees and a national council of its own.

Indexing and Scholarly Standing

The journal is abstracted and indexed in Crossref and in the TNAI database, and bibliometric researchers record that it was also indexed in the Scopus database for a long span, from 1965 to 2015. Its citation metrics are modest by international standards — one widely cited bibliometric account lists an impact factor of 0.037 for 2023,with an h-index of 7 and a g-index of 10 — but the same scholarship stresses that the journal is popularly accepted and widely respected by nursing institutes, researchers and nursing professionals both in India and abroad. Its influence has never rested on citation counts alone: it rests on being the association journal that nursing colleges and practitioners across the country actually receive and read.

The Journal as a Subject of Research

Unusually,The Nursing Journal of India has itself become an object of academic study. Bibliometric analyses have examined a decade of its output, from 2014 to 2023,tracing its citing and cited articles and testing classical bibliometric patterns such as Lotka's law against its authorship. A 2025 study devoted entirely to the journal rehearses its history — the 1910 monthly launch, the move to bimonthly publication, its role as a key platform for nursing knowledge in India — as the necessary background to measuring its modern performance. Such studies treat the journal the way historians treat it: as the central, continuous record of Indian nursing scholarship.

The Association Beyond the Journal

The journal cannot be separated from the wider work of its publisher. TNAI maintains a recognised rapport with the Government of India,is represented in governmental endeavours in nursing and health — its points of view have been sought by bodies from the Bhore Committee onward — and is affiliated with governmental and non-governmental organisations nationally and internationally. Since 1991 its members have received a railway concession, for which the association is authorised to issue certificates. It has collaborated in research and health projects, including an HIV/AIDS project with the American Nurses' Association in 1994 and a UNICEF reproductive and child health project in 2001. The journal is the printed voice of that association: the channel through which this activity is reported to the membership.

Audience and Readership

The Nursing Journal of India's readers are the Indian nursing profession itself: staff nurses and nursing administrators in hospitals and community settings, nurse educators in colleges and training schools, student nurses encountering professional literature for the first time, and researchers looking for an Indian venue and an Indian readership. Because TNAI is a membership association with state branches, the journal reaches readers far beyond the metropolitan teaching hospitals, into the smaller institutions where most Indian nursing care is actually delivered. Its acceptance by foreign nursing institutes and professionals gives that writing a modest but real international circulation as well.

The Nursing Journal of India Today

More than 115 years after its first issue,The Nursing Journal of India continues from New Delhi as the bimonthly official organ of the Trained Nurses' Association of India, presented by the association through its official website. It remains what it was designed to be in 1910: the oldest nursing journal in India, the main link between a national association and its members, and a standing invitation to Indian nurses to write up their practice, education and research for one another. The anxious editor of 1912,who feared a blank journal, has been answered by a century of contributors.
