About TV2000

TV2000

TV2000 is an Italian television network based in Rome that carries Roman Catholic-themed programming and is owned by the Italian Episcopal Conference, the conference of the Catholic bishops of Italy. Launched in 1998 as SAT2000 and renamed TV2000 in 2009, it broadcasts nationally on digital terrestrial television, by satellite across Europe and online. Its schedule is unlike that of any Italian generalist competitor: daily Mass and the Rosary sit alongside a full news service, talk shows, documentaries, classical music, films and drama series, all framed by the channel's Catholic identity. For viewers in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe who receive it by satellite or streaming, TV2000 is the most direct televisual window on Italian Catholic life, from Vatican ceremonies to the everyday pastoral work of parishes and religious orders.

Launch as SAT2000

The channel began in 1998 under the name SAT2000. The original name reflected its means of distribution: it broadcast only via satellite, although some of its programmes could also be seen on analogue terrestrial television through agreements with local broadcasters. That arrangement was a pragmatic solution for a church-owned channel without a national terrestrial licence of its own — satellite provided the national and European reach, while the local agreements put selected programmes in front of viewers who did not have satellite equipment. The operating company behind the channel is Rete Blu S.p.A., controlled by the Italian Episcopal Conference, and that ownership has remained constant through the channel's whole history. The choice of the year 2000 in the brand looked ahead to the Great Jubilee of that year, a landmark moment for the Catholic Church, and the channel established itself in the years around it as the bishops' own television voice.

Rebirth as TV2000

In 2009 the channel was renamed TV2000, dropping the satellite reference from its name. The change, which took effect in September 2009, reflected a changed distribution reality: with Italy moving towards digital terrestrial television, the channel was no longer a satellite-only service. Under its new name it took its place as a national digital terrestrial channel, broadcasting on channel 28, while continuing its satellite transmissions. The rebrand also allowed a broader presentation of the service. TV2000 describes itself in Italian as a television that switches the viewer on — a general entertainment and information channel with a Catholic soul, rather than a purely devotional service. News, culture, health, cinema and family programming were given space alongside worship, and that mixed schedule is the one the channel retains today, in 16:9 standard and high definition.

Ownership and leadership

TV2000 is owned by the Italian Episcopal Conference and operated through Rete Blu S.p.A. That structure links the channel directly to the institutional Church in Italy while giving it a conventional broadcaster's organisation, with its own newsroom, programme departments and advertising and distribution operations in Rome. The connection between the channel and the wider Church was illustrated by the career of Paolo Ruffini, a lay journalist who headed the bishops' conference television and radio services — TV2000 and its radio sister Radio InBlu — from 2014 to 2018. In July 2018 Pope Francis appointed Ruffini prefect of the Vatican's Secretariat for Communication, making him the first layperson to head a Vatican dicastery at that level. His move from running TV2000 to running the Holy See's communications underlined the channel's standing as the principal training ground and showcase for Catholic broadcasting in Italy.

Worship at the heart of the schedule

Religious broadcasting is the foundation on which the rest of the TV2000 schedule is built. The channel carries Holy Mass produced by the Centro Televisivo Vaticano, the Vatican television centre, and broadcasts the Holy Rosary from Lourdes, the French Marian shrine, as a regular appointment. Its electronic programme guide shows the rhythm of a typical day: morning prayer and the Rosary in the early hours, Mass during the morning, the Divine Mercy chaplet in the afternoon, the Rosary from Lourdes in the early evening and further Mass and prayer in prime-time-adjacent slots. Programmes about the saints, pilgrimages, the Holy Land and the life of religious communities run through the daytime schedule. For elderly, housebound and isolated Catholics in particular, this daily televised worship is the channel's core service, connecting viewers who cannot attend church in person to the prayer of the wider Church.

News through TG2000

TV2000 is not only a devotional channel; it runs a full news operation. Its bulletin, TG2000, is broadcast several times a day — on weekdays and Saturdays at 08:30, 12:00, 14:55, 18:30 and 20:45, with Sunday editions in the evening — and covers Italian and international news with a particular sensitivity to Church affairs, social issues, migration, poverty and peace. Papal journeys receive extended treatment, with special coverage under titles such as Chiesa Viva following apostolic visits step by step, and the newsroom produces magazine strands such as Storie d'Italia. The tone is deliberately different from the combative political talk of Italy's commercial channels: TG2000 reports the same national agenda, but its running order gives space to stories — charities, missions, parishes, the developing world — that rarely lead bulletins elsewhere. In a crowded Italian news market, that distinct selection is the channel's editorial signature.

Talk, culture and everyday life

Around the worship and news, TV2000 builds a daytime and evening schedule of talk and magazine programmes. Long-running titles cited in the channel's programme listings include Nel cuore dei giorni, an actuality programme, and Romanzo familiare, a talk show about family life. Soul is an interview series hosted by Monica Mondo, in which public figures — cardinals, writers, journalists and theologians — discuss faith and life in depth. Bel tempo si spera and Di Buon Mattino provide morning magazine content, L'ora solare and Siamo Noi occupy daytime and evening discussion slots, and Il mio medico covers health. Educational and inspirational documentaries, including films from the National Geographic Society, classical music concerts and current affairs features complete a schedule designed to be watched by the whole family. The channel also broadcasts well-loved drama, notably repeats of Don Matteo, the Rai series about a crime-solving parish priest, whose presence in the schedule neatly expresses TV2000's blend of entertainment and faith.

Distribution in Italy and Europe

TV2000 is broadcast in Italy on digital terrestrial channel 28, where it is available free to air to the whole population. On satellite it has been carried on Hot Bird 13B at 13 degrees East and on Eutelsat 9B at 9 degrees East, giving it a footprint across Europe, and it appears in Italian pay television line-ups — programme information for its news bulletins lists it at channel 157 on Sky in Italy. Its stated broadcast area is Europe as a whole, and its satellite availability is how the channel reaches the audience covered by this directory in the United Kingdom: Italian-speaking Catholics in Britain, along with viewers interested in Vatican and Italian affairs, can receive the Roman channel alongside their domestic services. The channel's headquarters are in Rome, close to the institutions — the bishops' conference, the Vatican and the Italian state — that dominate its news agenda.

Digital services

TV2000 has extended its service online in step with Italian viewing habits. The channel is streamed live on its official website, tv2000.it, and its programmes are available through the Play2000 app for mobile devices, which carries live television, the editions of TG2000 and on-demand programmes. Its YouTube presence publishes news reports, interviews and programme clips, extending individual items far beyond their broadcast audience. For a channel whose core audience includes older viewers, the combination matters: the terrestrial broadcast remains the primary service, while streaming allows emigrant Italians, younger Catholics and the merely curious anywhere in Europe to watch live Masses, papal events and news without a satellite dish. Digital distribution has also freed the channel from the constraints of its original satellite-plus-local-agreements launch model, giving it the direct relationship with viewers that the 2009 rebrand anticipated.

Place in Italian broadcasting

TV2000 occupies a small but secure niche in Italian television. It does not compete for the mass entertainment audience of Rai, Mediaset or even La7, and its viewing figures are those of a specialist service. Its importance lies elsewhere: it is the institutional television voice of the Catholic Church in the country with the closest historical ties to the Vatican, it provides a daily religious service to viewers who depend on it, and its newsroom offers a recognisably different selection and tone from every other Italian bulletin. More than a quarter of a century after its launch as SAT2000, and well over a decade since it took its present name, the channel remains a fixture of the Italian digital terrestrial line-up at channel 28 and of European satellite guides — a reminder that public-service values in Italian broadcasting are supplied not only by the state broadcaster but also by the Church.
