School Transportation News
School Transportation News is a monthly business-to-business magazine and news service for the pupil transportation industry in the United States, based in Torrance, California. First published in September 1991 by founder Bill Paul, it covers the business of getting students to and from school safely and efficiently: school bus operations, safety, maintenance, technology, legislation and the management of district and contractor fleets. Its publisher, STN Media Group, describes its mission in exactly those terms — creating content, community and commerce to support the school transportation industry.
Known across its industry simply as STN, the magazine reaches more than 26,000 qualified monthly readers, with an estimated additional 95,000 pass-along readers, and its business has grown well beyond print. The STN brand now encompasses a large news website, a weekly electronic newsletter, webinars, a podcast, and a family of national conferences and trade shows anchored by the STN EXPO.
Founded by Bill Paul in 1991
School Transportation News was first published in September 1991 by Bill Paul, who served as the magazine's editor and publisher until 2007. Paul was no newcomer when he launched it: he had reported on the pupil transportation industry for nearly three decades, previously serving as editor and publisher of School Bus Fleet and of Metro magazine. He also founded the Suppliers Council of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and is a member of the National Association for Pupil Transportation Hall of Fame, distinctions that placed the new magazine's founder at the centre of the industry it set out to cover.
Paul's role did not end when he stepped down as editor and publisher in 2007. He remained chairman of STN Media Group, the company that operates the magazine and its related conferences, contributed commentary to the magazine, and stayed active in industry bodies; he was later named to the board of the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute, a national training organisation. The company behind the magazine still trades under his name: exhibitor documents for its conferences list the holder as William E Paul Inc., doing business as STN Media Group, at 5334 Torrance Boulevard in Torrance, California.
STN Media Group and the move beyond print
STN Media Group was formed in 2008 to offer a broader range of services around the magazine. That date marks the point at which School Transportation News formally became the anchor of a media and events business rather than a standalone magazine. Under publisher and president Tony Corpin, the group added creative marketing services — web, print and multimedia programmes and industry research projects for clients — alongside its editorial products, a structure typical of modern trade publishing in which the publication's audience is also the market its advertisers want to reach.
Leadership continuity on the editorial side has been notable. Ryan Gray has served as editor-in-chief since October 2007 and has reported on the industry since 2001. As chief content officer for STN Media Group he is also educational director for the group's EXPO conferences and for its special needs transportation conference, a dual role that connects the magazine's coverage agenda directly to the programmes of its live events. His byline archive runs to more than 1,700 posts on the STN website.
The magazine and its readers
The print magazine is published monthly and is a qualified-circulation title: its readership of more than 26,000 is qualified by BPA Worldwide, the media auditing organisation, and an outside consultant's survey estimated a further 95,000 pass-along readers who see copies passed around transportation departments and bus garages. An earlier company account put the reach at more than 24,000 student transportation professionals, with the magazine then published 11 times a year, plus an annual directory and supplements. The magazine is also available in digital edition form, with each issue's contents mirrored online.
The editorial formula mixes news, features and practical service journalism. A typical issue combines a top story and special reports with sections on industry connections, headlines, analysis from technical and legal contributors, columns from the editor-in-chief and from Paul himself, and departments covering products, people and events. Recurring coverage themes include school bus safety at the stop and on board, alternative fuels and vehicle technology, fleet maintenance, federal and state regulation, budgeting, and the management of drivers and other staff. The October 2026 issue, for example, was framed around how transportation leaders use technology, training and leadership to improve safety and operations, including collision-avoidance systems.
The website and STN eNews
STN describes its website at stnonline.com as the largest and most comprehensive in pupil transportation, containing more than 8,000 pages of industry information. The site publishes news updates well beyond the monthly print cycle, organises material by topic — safety, operations, maintenance, green bus and alternative fuels, special needs, management and training among them — and carries an extensive archive reaching back over the publication's history, including a detailed history of school transportation in the United States that the magazine has compiled and maintained online.
The magazine's free weekly electronic newsletter, STN eNews, is sent to a subscription list of about 30,000 recipients, extending the brand's reach beyond its qualified print circulation. Together with the website's banner, webcast and video advertising, the newsletter makes STN a continuous presence in its readers' working week rather than a monthly one.
STN EXPO: West, East and the summit model
The best-known extension of the brand is the STN EXPO Conference & Trade Show, an annual conference historically held in July that brings together more than 1,000 pupil, public and private transportation professionals from across the United States and worldwide. Its educational programme is organised around tracks covering business management, maintenance and technology, Head Start and special needs transportation, and safety and security, and its trade show floor puts school bus manufacturers and suppliers in front of the officials who buy their products; one trade show in the event's twenty-fifth year drew almost 130 vendors.
The original event, now STN EXPO West, is held in Reno, Nevada. STN EXPO East was launched in June 2019 in Indianapolis to join it, and later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Within and around the EXPOs, STN has built a cluster of specialist experiences: the Green Bus Summit, introduced in 2015, on alternative fuels and clean energy decisions; the Transportation Director Summit, launched in 2017 as an application-only, graduate-level leadership event for directors and senior administrators; and the Bus Technology Summit, new in 2024, an immersive lab for the latest transport technology, which converged with the Green Bus Summit at the Charlotte event in 2025. A Ride and Drive programme lets attendees experience vehicles directly, and special training offerings include the National School Bus Inspection Training Program and hands-on wheelchair securement classes.
The TSD Conference and special needs transportation
STN's second major conference franchise is the annual Transporting Students with Disabilities & Special Needs Conference & Trade Show, known as the TSD Conference. It offers hands-on child securement, evacuation and workshop training for educators and transporters who work with students with special needs, preschoolers and Head Start children, together with a trade show specific to that segment of the industry. The conference is produced in conjunction with a special needs roadeo — a skills competition for transport teams — presented by STN Media Group and the industry organisation Women in Transportation.
The TSD Conference matters to the magazine's identity because special needs transportation is among the most technically and legally demanding parts of pupil transportation, involving individualised education programmes, securement standards and staff training. Ryan Gray serves as its educational director as well as the EXPOs', and STN's coverage of the segment, in print and online, is correspondingly deep.
Webinars, podcast and multimedia
STN's multimedia operation includes a webinar series of hour-long presentations, typically sponsored by industry manufacturers and suppliers, showing how student transporters are applying innovation and technology in their operations. In March 2020 the group launched the School Transportation Nation podcast, presenting industry news updates and analysis from publisher Tony Corpin and editor-in-chief Ryan Gray, with guest trainers and transportation directors sharing experience and advice on the issues student transporters face daily.
The timing was significant: a podcast launched in the month American schools closed for the pandemic gave the brand a channel for the fast-moving operational guidance its audience suddenly needed, and it has remained part of the group's output since. Recognition for the wider business has included a 2011 Best of Business Award from the Small Business Community Association, which cited the magazine's national reach among student transportation professionals.
Coverage themes: safety first
Across all its platforms, safety is STN's defining subject, consistent with an industry whose entire purpose is the safe movement of children. Its reporting returns repeatedly to the danger zone around the stopped school bus and illegal passing by motorists, including federal action to combat it and research on driver behaviour; to crashes and their investigations; to seat belts and compartmentalisation research; to student securement, particularly for children with disabilities; and to security threats, driver training and emergency preparation. Federal voices are regular presences in that coverage: a chief of safety countermeasures for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for instance, joined the STN EXPO West agenda to discuss federal work on illegal passing.
Technology and energy form the second great theme: electric school buses and the federal Clean School Bus funding behind them, propane and other alternative fuels, telematics, video surveillance and its review policies, routing software, and most recently artificial intelligence in transportation operations. The third theme is the operation itself — driver shortages and recruitment, budgets, contracting between districts and private providers, and the legislation, from state bus laws to federal emissions rules, that frames all of it.
Audience and place in the industry
STN's audience is the professional infrastructure of American pupil transportation: district transportation directors and supervisors, state directors, private contractor executives, fleet maintenance managers, trainers, and the manufacturers and suppliers who sell buses, parts, technology and services to them. It is a business audience of buyers and decision-makers, which is why the group's model blends editorial reach, audited by BPA Worldwide, with conferences that function as marketplaces and with marketing services sold to industry clients.
Within its niche, School Transportation News occupies the position of a central trade institution rather than simply a magazine. It is referenced as a source by federal education statistics publications, its founder helped build the industry's own supplier institutions, and its conferences set dates in the industry's calendar. Few trade titles can claim that their publisher also trains, convenes and supplies market research to the same profession it reports on; STN's three decades of continuity since 1991 rest on exactly that integration.
School Transportation News today
More than thirty years after its first issue, School Transportation News continues to publish monthly in print and digital form from Torrance, California, under STN Media Group, with Ryan Gray as editor-in-chief, Tony Corpin as publisher and president, and founder Bill Paul as chairman. Its website, weekly newsletter, webinar series and podcast run alongside the STN EXPO West and East conferences, the Green Bus, Transportation Director and Bus Technology summits, and the TSD Conference. For the professionals who move America's students, it remains what its mission statement promises: a source of content, a centre of community and a channel of commerce for their industry, at stnonline.com.
