About Grabyo

Grabyo

Grabyo is a London-based cloud video platform founded in the United Kingdom and used by broadcasters, news organisations and sports rights holders. It provides live clipping, editing and social-video publishing tools for news and sport coverage, allowing digital teams to create, edit and distribute video from a web browser without traditional broadcast hardware. Its customers have included major sports rights owners and media companies such as the Premier League, La Liga, the National Hockey League, Eurosport, Sky Sports, Real Madrid and The Championships, Wimbledon.

Grabyo belongs to a category of London media companies that do not publish news themselves but make modern news and sport publishing possible. When a broadcaster clips a goal, a wicket or a breaking-news moment and publishes it to social platforms within seconds, tools of the kind Grabyo pioneered are at work. The company was founded in 2013, at the moment when viewing was shifting rapidly to mobile and social video, and it grew from a small London team into a global business serving clients in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Overview

Grabyo is a browser-based, cloud-native video production and distribution platform. It is built entirely on Amazon Web Services and requires only a web browser to produce professional-quality live streams and video clips from anywhere in the world. Sports federations, broadcasters and media companies use it to produce and distribute live shows, such as sports or music events, and video clips, such as pre-match warm-ups, behind-the-scenes activity and instant highlights.

The purposes customers use it for are consistent across its history: to build digital fan bases, to drive television audiences, and to generate revenue from third-party sponsors and pay-television subscriptions. For news organisations, the same tools serve a parallel purpose, turning live feeds into clips that can be published to websites and social platforms while a story is still developing.

Founding and Early Growth

Grabyo was founded in 2013 by Will Neale and launched in September of that year. Neale, who had fifteen years of experience in digital and technology work, started the business after noticing how viewing habits were shifting to mobile. The company appeared in the Startups 100 index, and by the middle of the decade it had built a portfolio of more than sixty clients across Europe, Asia and the United States in sport, news, music and entertainment, with a team of twenty-three.

Growth brought recognition. Grabyo ranked seventy-seventh in the Financial Times FT 1000 list of Europe's fastest-growing companies in 2018. A decade after its founding, the company marked ten years of innovation in 2024, having grown from around ten people in London to a global team spanning Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. Its headquarters remained in London, with offices in Spain and the United States recorded during its expansion.

Investors

Grabyo's early backing attracted attention because of who provided it. In November 2014, high-profile sports stars including the footballers Cesc Fàbregas, Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie and the basketball player Tony Parker invested two million dollars in the company. Its investors have also included Oliver Slipper and Nicole Junkermann.

The involvement of elite sportspeople was more than publicity. Grabyo's market was sport, and its investors were individuals whose own performances were among the content being clipped and shared. Their backing signalled, to rights holders and broadcasters, that social video was becoming a central part of how sport reached its audience, rather than an addition to television coverage.

The Platform: Studio, Producer and Editor

Grabyo's products developed as an end-to-end suite. Grabyo Studio ingests live television and video feeds so that segments of a show or event can be clipped during broadcast through a browser-based live editing suite. Clips can be grabbed in a simple operation, previewed and edited with comments and hashtags, enhanced with sponsorship and advertising assets, and shared in native format to each social platform. Studio supports editing into mobile-optimised formats including square and vertical video, and live streaming to multiple accounts across platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.

Grabyo Producer extended the platform into live production, offering a cloud control room with vision mixing, instant replay, multiviewers, remote guest contribution and broadcast graphics support, together with professional feed protocols for bringing live sources in and out of the cloud. Grabyo Editor, launched at the IBC exhibition in Amsterdam, added a browser-based editing tool for creating short video highlights and social videos in seconds, with transitions, audio edits and titling, without specific hardware, software licences or extensive training. Editor was later fully integrated with the wider platform, creating a single workflow for clipping, live streaming and video editing.

Facebook Live and Social Video

A defining early moment came in April 2016, when Facebook unveiled Grabyo as an official streaming partner for its Facebook Live service. The arrangement gave media publishers the ability to stream live broadcasts directly to Facebook and to post instant highlights natively on Facebook throughout a live broadcast. For a young London company, selection by one of the world's largest platforms confirmed its position at the forefront of social video.

The platform was designed for the social environment from the start. It integrated with Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Periscope, and with video players and distribution services used by broadcasters. That integration matters because speed and format decide whether a clip is seen: a moment published natively, in the right shape for a phone screen, while an event is still live, reaches audiences that a clip published later cannot.

Customers in Sport and News

Sport has been Grabyo's largest market. Its customers have been listed as including La Liga, the NHL, Eurosport, Sky Sports, the FIFA World Cup, the FIA Formula E Championship, The Championships at Wimbledon, the Premier League and Real Madrid, together with organisations such as the ATP World Tour, the Ryder Cup, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the Brit Awards and Channel 5. More than eighty-five major publishers have been described as trusting the platform.

News is the other half of the company's relevance to a media directory. Broadcasters and news organisations use the same live clipping and rapid editing tools to publish breaking news video to digital platforms, taking moments from live feeds and turning them into shareable clips while coverage continues. Grabyo's own descriptions of its market have consistently grouped its users as broadcasters, news organisations and sports rights holders, which is why the platform appears in accounts of both sports broadcasting and digital news production.

Partnerships and Remote Production

As cloud production matured, Grabyo's development took the form of partnerships that connected its platform to the rest of the production chain. A partnership with Dejero integrated that company's mobile transmitters and video transport into Grabyo's platform, allowing live video to be carried wirelessly into cloud production and distributed to broadcast, digital and social platforms simultaneously from anywhere in the world. A partnership with LiveU combined Grabyo's cloud production, editing, clipping and highlights tools with LiveU's live video contribution units and smartphone application, a combination promoted for remote production when teams were working from home during the COVID-19 period.

A later partnership with Haivision connected Grabyo's platform to professional encoders and mobile transmitters for low-latency, multi-camera contribution into cloud remote production, with feeds sent to Grabyo Producer for synchronisation, camera switching, instant replay and audio mixing. These partnerships show the company's place in the industry: not a broadcaster, but a layer of software through which other companies' cameras, networks and programmes pass.

Leadership

Will Neale founded Grabyo and shaped its original vision of enabling publishers to connect with consumers on mobile devices around the globe with the right content, in the right format, at the right time. Gareth Capon serves as chief executive and has been the company's public voice in its later development, describing its mission as making video creation and live production as simple and flexible as possible, and its products as driven by the needs of its partners in the sports and broadcast industries.

Under that leadership the company's emphasis shifted from its original social clipping tool towards full live cloud production, including multi-camera productions that Capon has argued can achieve outstanding quality without trucks, studios or a large on-site crew. That progression, from clipping highlights to producing entire live programmes in the cloud, mirrors the wider movement of broadcast production away from fixed facilities.

Significance

Grabyo is significant as an example of London's role in the technology behind modern media. The capital is known for the broadcasters and publishers based there; Grabyo shows that it also produces the tools those organisations use. Founded in 2013, backed by famous sports investors, adopted as a Facebook Live partner within three years and ranked among Europe's fastest-growing companies, it helped define cloud video production as a standard way of working.

For news coverage specifically, Grabyo's importance lies in speed. The expectation that a breaking story or a sporting moment will appear as a polished clip on social platforms within moments of happening was created by platforms of this kind. Broadcasters, news organisations and rights holders in many countries now build their digital publishing around such tools, and one of the companies that built that market did so from London.
