About Limelight
Limelight
Limelight is Australia's leading classical music and arts magazine, published in print and digital from Sydney. Originally launched by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1976 as ABC Radio 24 Hours, it has chronicled the country's performing arts for half a century — from orchestral concerts and opera to theatre, dance and film — and is recognised as the journal of record for classical orchestral and vocal music in Australia. Since March 2018 it has been published independently by Limelight Arts Media, owned by music lovers Robert Veel and Bruce Watson.
Overview
Limelight publishes its print magazine 11 times per year and circulates a weekly digital music and performing arts newsletter to more than 30,000 subscribers. The website publishes reviews of orchestral music, chamber music, opera, theatre, dance and film, performing arts news, artist profiles and in-depth features, and is read by more than 1.25 million visitors each year. Its "eventful" listing service and weekly newsletter keep readers up to date on performances around Australia. The editor is Jo Litson, with Jason Blake as digital editor, Clive Paget as editor-at-large, Maddy Briggs among the staff writers, and former editors including Clive Paget, Francis Merson and Katarina Kroslakova. The publisher is Limelight Arts Media Pty Ltd.
History
The magazine's lineage begins in January 1976, when the ABC launched it as ABC Radio 24 Hours — or simply 24 Hours — a program guide and companion to the broadcaster's classical radio output. In June 2003 it was relaunched as Limelight, broadening from a listings magazine into a full classical music and arts title with interviews, features and criticism. For years it was published under the ABC's umbrella and later through Haymarket, carrying the authority of the national broadcaster's classical music operation, ABC Classic FM, whose broadcasts and listings were a central part of the magazine's offering.
The title's most dramatic chapter came in early 2018. Limelight experienced financial difficulties and the magazine's future was in doubt — until a newly established company, Limelight Arts Media Pty Ltd, co-directed by Robert Veel and Bruce Watson, stepped in to buy it. "Limelight magazine is delighted to announce that its future is now secure," the magazine announced. "As of today, a newly established company Limelight Arts Media Pty Ltd, co-directed by Robert Veel and Bruce Watson, will be publishing Limelight magazine both physically with its 11 issues a year, as well as its comprehensive website offering daily news, reviews of performances around Australia, and feature articles." With Veel's support the March 2018 issue went ahead — on newsstands and on its way to subscribers — and publishing continued with the same committed team, now on what the announcement called "a financially secure footing." Speaking about the purchase, Veel and Watson said: "We are both music lovers who are committed to ensuring that Limelight maintains its excellent journalistic qualities and its status as the journal of record for classical music and the performing arts in Australia."
The independent era has been a productive one. The website — launched with the declaration that Australia's fine music and arts scene "has never really had the website to cover it" — became a hub for breaking news, reviews, interviews with touring artists, an Event Finder listing classical concerts across the country "from Melbourne to Mount Isa," and an authoritative CD, DVD and film review database. The print magazine has continued its 11-issue rhythm, with recent issues including the October 2026 edition celebrating "renewal, mentorship, musical discovery and the growing international presence of Australian artists."
Content and Features
Limelight's coverage spans the performing arts: orchestral and chamber music, opera, theatre, dance and film. The website carries daily performing-arts news, reviews of concerts around Australia, artist profiles and in-depth features. The print magazine's signature issues have included the annual bumper Opera Issue — the 2011 edition fronted by Renée Fleming — and cover interviews with figures of the stature of Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Plácido Domingo, who celebrated his 70th birthday with the magazine in an extended September interview. The "eventful" listings service and weekly newsletter function as the industry's diary, keeping the arts community and audiences informed of performances nationwide.
The magazine has also been known for distinctive editorial projects: a national acoustics survey of concert halls and a ranking of Australian orchestras are among the features that have set the agenda for discussion in the classical music world.
Limelight in 2026
The magazine's fiftieth year finds it in full voice. The October 2026 issue — on sale from late September — celebrates "renewal, mentorship, musical discovery and the growing international presence of Australian artists," themes the website's daily coverage bears out. Recent reporting includes the Utzon Music chamber series' 2027 season announcement, a 20th-anniversary program spanning American composer Caroline Shaw to kora virtuoso Ballaké Sissoko; the appointment of Shuhei Lawson as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra's new Assistant Principal Cello; British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason's Australian recital debut; and a tribute to composer Michael Sollis's "endless energy and passion" ahead of his memorial service. Beyond the concert hall, the site covers the Powerhouse Parramatta Opening Festival — a 23-day program centring Western Sydney artists and communities — and the reopening of Arts Centre Melbourne's Ian Potter State Theatre, "just one of a number of new and revitalised venues around the country." It is the daily record of an art form in motion.
Coverage and Audience
Based in Sydney, Limelight is a national publication serving Australia's classical music and performing arts community — musicians, companies, presenters, educators and audiences. The print circulation was recorded at 9,138 in 2012; the digital audience has grown far beyond that, with more than 1.25 million annual website visitors and a weekly newsletter reaching over 30,000 subscribers. At a time when the arts are losing visibility in mainstream media, the magazine positions itself as the essential independent voice for the sector — "Australia's essential guide to classical music and the arts."
Ownership
Since March 2018 Limelight has been published independently by Limelight Arts Media Pty Ltd, co-directed and owned by Robert Veel and Bruce Watson, who describe themselves as music lovers committed to the magazine's journalistic quality and its status as the journal of record. Previously the magazine was published by the ABC (as ABC Radio 24 Hours / 24 Hours) and subsequently through Haymarket. Further ownership and financial details are not publicly confirmed.
Digital Presence
The magazine's digital home is limelight-arts.com.au, publishing daily news, reviews, features and the Event Finder concert listings. A weekly digital newsletter goes to more than 30,000 subscribers. Digital magazine subscriptions are available through library platforms including EBSCO's Flipster, and the title offers unlimited digital access subscriptions from $4 per month. The site's recent coverage — the Utzon Music 2027 season announcement, Queensland Symphony Orchestra appointments, the Powerhouse Parramatta Opening Festival, Arts Centre Melbourne's State Theatre reopening — demonstrates the breadth of its daily arts journalism.
