About Longreach Leader

Longreach Leader

The Longreach Leader — published today as The Leader — is an independent weekly newspaper serving Longreach and the Central West of Queensland. Founded in 1923, the paper is the Central West's first choice for local news: two separate editions (the Central West edition and the Longreach edition) reporting the issues affecting the people of the Central West and Western Queensland. The paper's footprint spans the shires of Longreach, Flinders, McKinlay, Boulia and Diamantina. Its digital home is leadertoday.com.au, under the Today News Group.

Overview

Longreach — the outback Queensland town on the Thomson River, the birthplace of Qantas, the heart of the Central West — is the Leader's home: the independent weekly for the western districts. Published by the Today News Group, the paper serves the shires of Longreach, Flinders, McKinlay, Boulia and Diamantina: the cattle country, the opal fields, the Channel Country's edge — the vast western Queensland the paper covers. The two editions — Central West and Longreach — give the region its localised weeklies: the district's news, the district's paper.

History

The Longreach Leader's first issue was published on 5 January 1923 — the Longreach Printing Co. Ltd.'s weekly for the Central West. For 98 years the paper served the western districts: the pastoral booms and busts, the wars, the droughts and floods, the outback's transformation. In early October 2021 the owners advised that production of the weekly would be suspended — the last edition published on Friday 15 October 2021 — after 98 years, due to financial losses primarily caused by shrinking advertising revenue. The publisher hoped to restructure the company and bring the paper back sustainably. The revival — The Leader, under the Today News Group — returned the independent weekly to the Central West: the 1923 masthead's heir, the region's paper restored. The paper's early issues (1923–1954) are digitised on Trove: the Central West's 20th century, searchable.

Content

The Leader publishes the independent weekly mix for the Central West: the local news, the pastoral-industry stories, the community features, the sport — the western districts' week. The two editions — Central West and Longreach — localise the coverage: the shires' councils, the cattle sales, the community events, the outback's issues. The paper's journalism is the western Queensland formula: the distances, the droughts, the distances again — the outback's realities, reported for the outback's people.

Coverage and Audience

The Leader's footprint — the shires of Longreach, Flinders, McKinlay, Boulia and Diamantina — spans western Queensland: the cattle stations, the small towns (Winton, Hughenden, Boulia, Bedourie), the vast distances. Its readers are the Central West's people: the graziers, the station workers, the small-business owners, the town residents — the outback's communities. The independent weekly serves the readers the metropolitan press never reaches: the western districts' households, the region's paper.

Ownership

The Leader is published by the Today News Group — the independent newspaper group behind the revived title. The group's media kit describes the paper as "an independent weekly newspaper with two separate editions dedicated to reporting issues affecting people of the Central West and Western Queensland": the independent's mission, the region's service. The Today News Group's stewardship continues the 1923 founding: the Longreach Leader's lineage, the Leader's present.

Digital Presence

The Leader's digital home is leadertoday.com.au: the Central West's news online, the two editions' stories, the western districts' week. For the region's readers — and the outback's diaspora — the digital paper extends the weekly: the distances collapsed, the community connected. The 1923 paper, revived: the Longreach Leader as The Leader, the Central West's independent weekly, in print and on the screen.

The 1923 Founding

The Longreach Leader's first issue — 5 January 1923, the Longreach Printing Co. Ltd.'s weekly — arrived in the Central West's pastoral heyday: the wool booms, the cattle kings, the outback's prosperity. The paper served the western districts through the century: the Depression's hardships, the war years' absences, the postwar pastoral expansion, the 1960s beef boom, the droughts that defined the decades. The Trove-digitised issues (1923–1954) — the front pages, the advertisements, the community notices — are the Central West's archive: the outback's 20th century, in newsprint.

The 2021 Suspension

The October 2021 suspension — announced in early October, the last edition on Friday 15 October 2021, after 98 years — was the outback press's crisis moment: the shrinking advertising revenue, the financial losses, the weekly that couldn't sustain itself. The ABC's coverage — "Longreach's weekly print newspaper, The Longreach Leader, suspended after 98 years" — marked the milestone: the near-century paper, paused. The publisher's hope — the restructure, the sustainable return — kept the masthead alive: the suspension, not the closure. The revival as The Leader — under the Today News Group — fulfilled that hope: the independent weekly, restored.

The Two Editions

The Leader's two editions — the Central West edition and the Longreach edition — serve the region's geography: the vast footprint, the scattered shires, the localised news. The Central West edition covers the district: Flinders, McKinlay, Boulia, Diamantina — the shires beyond Longreach. The Longreach edition serves the town: the Thomson River community, the Qantas birthplace, the outback's hub. The two-edition model gives the readers their local paper: the district's news, the town's news — the Leader, twice.

The Outback's Issues

The Leader's journalism — the pastoral-industry stories, the drought coverage, the cattle-market reports, the community events — is the Central West's record: the outback's economy, the outback's life. The paper covers the distances: the station news, the small-town councils, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the School of the Air — the institutions that make the outback work. The western districts' challenges — the droughts, the floods, the labour shortages, the service gaps — fill the paper's pages: the region's realities, the weekly's witness.

The Independent Weekly

The Leader's independence — the Today News Group's stewardship, the paper outside the corporate groups — is the Central West's media distinction: the region's own paper, the outback's voice. The 1923 founding, the 2021 suspension, the revival: the independent's resilience, the community's need. For the Central West's readers — the graziers, the workers, the townspeople — the Leader is the paper that stayed: the 98-year masthead, the independent weekly, the region's own.

The Digital Outback

The leadertoday.com.au digital edition — the Leader's online home — serves the readers the print can't reach: the station homesteads, the FIFO workers, the outback's diaspora. The western districts' news — the cattle sales, the community events, the shire decisions — travels on the screen: the distances collapsed, the region connected. The 1923 weekly, digitised: the Longreach Leader as The Leader, the Central West's independent, in print and online.

The Qantas Town's Paper

Longreach's identity — the Qantas founding town (1920), the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, the Thomson River, the outback's tourism hub — shapes the Leader's coverage: the heritage, the tourism, the town's pride. The paper covers the town the nation knows: the Qantas centenary stories, the Hall of Fame events, the river's life. The Leader is the Qantas town's paper: the community's achievements, the district's fame — Longreach, in the weekly.

The Region's Record

Each week, the Leader records the Central West: the shire decisions, the cattle sales, the community events, the station news. The weekly issues — the front pages, the photographs, the advertisements — are the outback's archive: the western districts' modern history, in newsprint. From 1923 to the suspension to the revival — the Longreach Leader as The Leader — the paper remains the region's record: the Central West's independent weekly, the outback's own.
