About North Queensland Register

North Queensland Register

North Queensland Register is a weekly agricultural newspaper published in Townsville, Queensland, serving the rural communities of the state's north. Descended from the Charters Towers paper of 1892 — the "Bushman's Bible" of the northern frontier — it is the agricultural paper of North Queensland: the cattle stations, the cane districts, and the vast pastoral country, published by Australian Community Media — the weekly the north has read for more than 130 years.

Overview

The North Queensland Register is a weekly newspaper — published in print each week and online at northqueenslandregister.com.au — covering the agricultural and regional news of North Queensland: the beef cattle industry, sugarcane, grains, horticulture, and the rural issues of the north. It serves the farmers, pastoralists, and agribusiness professionals of one of Australia's great agricultural regions — from the Burdekin's cane fields to the Gulf's cattle stations, from the Tablelands to the Channel Country.

The masthead is the northern Queensland flagship of ACM Agri, Australian Community Media's agricultural division, which employs more than 60 rural journalists producing Australia's largest offering of agricultural news content across five states. A single digital subscription unlocks the full ACM agricultural network: North Queensland Register, Queensland Country Life, Stock & Land, Stock Journal, Farm Weekly, The Land, and the national agricultural news website Farmonline — the complete rural press of the nation, in one login, for the northern reader.

History

The North Queensland Register's lineage is the history of the northern press. The paper was published in Charters Towers from 15 June 1892 to 30 March 1905 — formerly known as the North Queensland Herald and the Northern Mining Register — and was nicknamed the "Bushman's Bible": the gold city's paper for the northern frontier, the mining and pastoral districts' own journal. As James Cook University's historical notes record, the North Queensland Register "was to provide a uniting medium for the vast, sparsely inhabited territory of North Queensland, and it became known as the 'Bushman's Bible'" — the paper as the territory's connective tissue, the journal that made the vast north a community.

The paper was originally based in Charters Towers, the gold city of the north. In 1911, the Townsville weekly North Queensland Herald was incorporated into the North Queensland Register — the consolidation of the northern papers into the region's rural voice, the Charters Towers and Townsville titles joined in the one masthead — the northern press united — for good. The paper's history runs through the North Queensland Newspaper Company, registered in June 1910 following the amalgamation of the Northern Miner and the Townsville Newspaper Company, which published the Townsville Daily Bulletin, the Northern Miner, the North Queensland Register weekly, and the free weekly Advertiser.

The paper's history runs through the North Queensland Newspaper Company, registered on 11 June 1910 following the amalgamation of the Northern Miner newspaper and the Townsville Newspaper Company, which published the Townsville Daily Bulletin, the Northern Miner (Charters Towers), the North Queensland Register weekly, and the free weekly Advertiser — the consolidated northern press — the Bulletin, the Miner, the Register, and the Advertiser under the one company roof. A fire on 17 October 1912 destroyed a large quantity of company records, including back runs of newspapers — the archival losses that make the surviving Register files, and the National Library's digitised 1892–1905 Charters Towers run, so precious to the region's historians — the fragile paper record of the frontier north.

The National Library of Australia catalogues The North Queensland Register as published in Townsville by the Northern Queensland Newspaper Company from 1985 — the modern weekly serving the rural north, the ISSN 1321-1668 record of the continuing title — the catalogued proof of the paper's unbroken lineage. Through the cattle booms and busts, the sugar industry's transformations, the mining expansions, and the digital age, the Register has been the bush paper of North Queensland.

The paper's corporate journey mirrors the Australian rural press: from the northern newspaper companies through Rural Press and Fairfax Media to Australian Community Media, acquired by Antony Catalano and Alex Waislitz's interests from Nine Entertainment in April 2019. ACM's origins trace to The Land, founded in Sydney in 1911; in 1981 the company was renamed Rural Press; by the mid-2000s Rural Press owned approximately 170 newspaper and magazine titles, predominantly in rural Australia; on 8 May 2007 Rural Press merged with John Fairfax to form Fairfax Media; Fairfax merged with Nine Entertainment in December 2018; and in April 2019 Nine sold the ACM stable to Catalano and Waislitz's Thorney Investment Group for $115 million plus $10 million, owned 50/50.

Content

The North Queensland Register's journalism is the northern agricultural press at full strength:

  • Beef cattle: the great northern cattle industry — the saleyards, the store and prime markets, the live export trade, and the station country from the Burdekin to the Gulf, the industry that built the north.
  • Sugarcane: the cane districts' news — the harvests, the mills, and the industry's economics, from the Burdekin's irrigated fields to the coastal mills.
  • Cropping and horticulture: the grains, the mangoes, and the diverse crops of the northern districts — the Tablelands' produce and the Burdekin's harvests.
  • Rural issues: the roads, the water, the biosecurity, and the policies shaping life in the vast, sparsely inhabited north — the tyranny of distance as the region's permanent news story.
  • Community: the shows, the campdrafts, and the social life of the bush — the events that bind the vast territory's scattered communities.

Coverage and Audience

The North Queensland Register serves the rural communities of North Queensland — the cattle producers, the cane growers, the station families, and the agribusiness professionals of the region. Its audience is the bush itself: the readers of the vast territory the paper was founded to unite, from Townsville's hinterland to the Channel Country's edge — the "Bushman's Bible" for the modern north, in print every week and online every day.

Ownership

The North Queensland Register is published by Australian Community Media (ACM), the regional media company owned 50/50 by Antony Catalano and Alex Waislitz's Thorney Investment Group since April 2019. ACM's origins trace to The Land, founded in Sydney in 1911; through Rural Press, Fairfax Regional Media, and the Fairfax–Nine merger, the agricultural mastheads arrived in ACM's hands in 2019 — the northern weekly in the national agricultural stable.

Digital Presence

The North Queensland Register operates online at northqueenslandregister.com.au — its official website — within the ACM agricultural network. The digital subscription unlocks unlimited access to all articles, the searchable directory of upcoming livestock, property, and clearing sales, and the digital weekly — and, with a single login, the full network: Queensland Country Life, Stock & Land, Stock Journal, Farm Weekly, The Land, and the national agricultural news website Farmonline. The website publishes between the weekly print editions — the northern agricultural news as it happens. ACM Ag employs more than 60 rural journalists producing Australia's largest offering of agricultural news content across five states — while remaining committed to the print publications, some going strong for over 100 years — the northern weekly among them, the Bushman's Bible still publishing.

For North Queensland, the Register remains what the Charters Towers paper of 1892 set out to be: the uniting medium of the vast north — the Bushman's Bible, in print and online, week after week — since 1892.
