About Power100

Power100

Power100 — callsign 4RGR — is a commercial radio station broadcasting to Townsville in Queensland, Australia on 100.7 MHz FM to Townsville, North Queensland. Owned by the Australian Radio Network, it plays an active rock format — "The New Home of Rock in Townsville" — aimed at the over-35 audience, male-skewed but female-friendly. It was established in 1999 as Sea FM by RG Capital, became Zinc 100.7, and was rebranded as Power100 in September 2016. Its sister station is Star 106.3, and both are based at 181 Sturt Street, Townsville. Wikipedia lists power100.com.au as its website; no website URL is asserted in this profile's frontmatter.

Overview

Power100 is Townsville's rock station: the active rock format — classic rock to contemporary rock and everything in between — for the garrison city's over-35s. Where Hit 103.1 plays the CHR hits for the young and Triple M plays the mainstream rock, Power100 plays the harder edge: the rock the research said Townsville wanted. "Our research tells us that Townsville loves its rock and until now there's been no true rock option available," said content director Jason Wolfgram at the 2016 launch. "We've listened to you Townsville and now we're finally ready to rock!"

History

The callsign — 4RGR — is the licence's identity: the 4 for Queensland, the RGR for the Radio Barrier Reef licensee. Through Sea FM, Zinc 100.7 and Power100, the callsign stayed: the brand changed, the licence didn't.
The Sea FM origins — 1999, RG Capital, Reg Grundy — were the network's Queensland expansion: the Sea FM brand from the Gold Coast, extended to Townsville. The 2003 sale to Macquarie Southern Cross Media — with Mix FM — put the stations under the owners of rivals 4TO FM and Hot FM: four stations, one owner, the diversity problem. The forced sale fixed it: Prime's Townsville duopoly, the Sea FM and Mix FM pair, competing against SCA's pair.
The Zinc years — 2008–2016 — were Prime's Queensland classic-rock network: Zinc 96 on the Sunshine Coast, Zinc 100.7 in Townsville, Zinc 101.9 in Mackay, the 'Zinc' brand across the Grant stations. But the research said Townsville wanted harder: not the classic-rock Zinc, but the active-rock Power. The September 2016 rebrand — 'Rock has returned to Townsville' — was the format the market demanded: classic rock to contemporary rock, everything in between.

Power100 was established as Sea FM in 1999 by RG Capital, headed by Reg Grundy — part of the Sea FM network's Queensland rollout. In 2003, the station was sold alongside sister station Mix FM (now Star 106.3) to Macquarie Southern Cross Media, owners of rivals 4TO FM and Hot FM. But Macquarie was forced to sell two stations to ensure diversity in the market, and in 2005 Mix FM and Sea FM were sold to Prime Media Group.

In 2013, Prime Media Group sold its radio division to Grant Broadcasters. In September 2016, the station was rebranded from Zinc 100.7 to Power100 — "Rock has returned to Townsville." The launch blew up the Zinc branding: the classic-rock Zinc, launched across Prime's Queensland stations in 2008–09, gave way to the active-rock Power. The live and local on-air lineup remained the same: Vinnie and Jess, Karina in the mornings, Wildy in the afternoon.

In November 2021, Power100 — with the other Grant Broadcasters stations — was acquired by the Australian Radio Network, the deal finalised on 4 January 2022. The acquisition gave the station access to ARN's iHeartRadio platform. It was expected that Power100 would integrate with ARN's Pure Gold Network while retaining its current name.

In the 2016 Townsville survey — the first with the new Grant branding — Power (formerly Zinc) improved 1.4 points to 8.6%, while the SCA duopoly of 4TO FM (21.7%) and Hot FM (21.1%) dominated.

Townsville — the garrison city — is rock territory: the army base, the workers, the mining money, the big utes and the bigger speakers. The 2016 research — 'Townsville loves its rock' — confirmed what the pubs knew: the city wanted a true rock option. Power100 is it: the over-35s, male-skewed but female-friendly, the audience the CHR and AC stations leave behind. The 181 Sturt Street studios — shared with Star 106.3 — are the ARN Townsville hub: the duopoly's home.

Programming

Power100 plays active rock: classic rock to contemporary rock and everything in between — "everything rocks." The local lineup at launch: Vinnie and Jess, Karina in the mornings, Wildy in the afternoon — live and local, the rock the research demanded. The format targets the over-35s, male-skewed but female-friendly: the garrison city's rock audience, the workers and the veterans, the listeners who wanted a true rock option.

The active-rock format — 'everything rocks' — is the differentiator: not the CHR of Hit 103.1, not the mainstream rock of Triple M Townsville, not the variety of Star 106.3, but the harder edge. Classic rock to contemporary rock: the heritage and the new, the anthems and the discovery. The launch lineup — Vinnie and Jess, Karina, Wildy — stayed: the voices the Zinc audience knew, the format they asked for.

Coverage & Audience

Power100 broadcasts on 100.7 MHz FM to Townsville — the garrison city, North Queensland's capital. Its audience is the over-35 rock listener: the demographic the 2016 research identified as underserved. In the 2016 survey, the station's 8.6% was the rebuilding phase — the new brand, the new format, the rock returning to Townsville.

The 2005 forced sale — Macquarie, owning 4TO FM and Hot FM, had to sell two stations for market diversity — is Australian radio regulation in action: the ACMA's two-station limit, the competition the rules protect. Prime Media Group bought the pair: Sea FM and Mix FM, the Townsville duopoly. Eight years later, Prime's radio division went to Grant Broadcasters (2013); nine years after that, Grant's 46 stations went to ARN (2022). The stations stayed; the owners changed: RG Capital, Macquarie, Prime, Grant, ARN — five owners in 23 years.
The ARN era — from 4 January 2022 — brought the iHeartRadio platform: the regional stations, streaming nationally, the podcasts, the digital audio. The Pure Gold Network integration — expected, with the Power100 name retained — puts the station in ARN's adult-rock family: the heritage rock, the gold formats, the over-35 audience. The name stayed; the platform grew.

Ownership

Power100 is owned by the Australian Radio Network (Radio Barrier Reef Pty Ltd), which acquired the station — with the rest of Grant Broadcasters' portfolio — in the deal finalised on 4 January 2022. Its sister station is Star 106.3 (4RGT) — the former Mix FM, sold alongside Power100's predecessor in every deal since 2003. Both stations are based at 181 Sturt Street, Townsville. The ownership history runs from RG Capital (1999–2003) through Macquarie (2003–2005), Prime Media Group (2005–2013), Grant Broadcasters (2013–2022) to ARN.

The sister-station story — Sea FM and Mix FM, launched together in 1999, sold together in every deal since — is the Townsville duopoly: Power100 and Star 106.3, the rock and the variety, the over-35s and the family audience. Together they're ARN's Townsville: the Pure Gold-leaning rocker and the KIIS-leaning hit station, covering the adult market between them. The 2016 survey — Power 8.6%, Star 8.7% — showed the rebuild: two new brands, finding their feet against the SCA giants.

Digital Presence

Wikipedia lists power100.com.au as the station's website; the station streams on ARN's iHeartRadio platform — the Grant acquisition's digital dividend. From Sea FM's 1999 launch to the Zinc years to Power100's 2016 rock rebirth to the 2022 ARN era: Townsville's rock station, on 100.7 — the new home of rock in Townsville, ready to rock.
