About T Australia
T Australia
T Australia is the Australian edition of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, published in Sydney under licence from The New York Times Licensing Group. Launched in early 2021 — the first issue appeared in March 2021 — it began as a quarterly print magazine supported by a dynamic online publication, and in 2024 expanded to ten issues a year. Published and edited by journalist Katarina Kroslakova, it covers fashion, culture, food and wine, travel, architecture, interiors, design and craftsmanship with what the publisher calls a "unique lens on Australian life and Australian style."
Overview
T Australia's motto is "Where culture meets style." The magazine combines original Australian content — interviews, features, fashion shoots and opinion pieces from Australian creatives — with coverage, photographs and commentary from the flagship New York edition of T Magazine. Its brief spans men's and women's fashion and style, food and wine, travel and architecture, entertainment and lifestyle: "the magazine that Australia is missing," in the launch materials' phrase, intended as "a cultural game-changer that will fuel conversations around the proverbial Australian watercooler."
The launch was deliberately timed. Announced in late 2020, months after Bauer Media (now Are Media) closed eight Australian magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Elle, NW and OK!, T Australia entered a market with a conspicuous gap in prestige fashion publishing. "With the current gap in the market, I feel the time is right to introduce a new magazine to Australia — and I can't think of a more prestigious brand than The New York Times," Kroslakova said.
History
The Australian edition was announced in November 2020 through a licensing agreement with The New York Times Licensing Group, with experienced Australian journalist Katarina Kroslakova as publisher and editor. Kroslakova was the managing director of content creation agency KK Ink and custom publishing house KK Press, a former editor of The Australian Financial Review's Life & Leisure and Luxury magazines, a Harper's Bazaar columnist, and editor of Maserati's Il Tridente magazine.
The first issue went on sale in March 2021 at $14.95, distributed through newsagents and subscriptions, with advertising sold through Publisher's Internationale. The launch rationale, in Kroslakova's words: "The New York Times has a significant digital readership in Australia, so it makes sense to serve this influential audience content that's even more relevant to them — with local authority and global context." She noted the pandemic-era paradox for magazines: "This year has been extraordinarily challenging for the media landscape in Australia, and for magazines in particular. Like many, I miss the magazines that have gone. The impacts of COVID-19 have made us love magazines even more, with subscription rates going through the roof."
The brand grew steadily. Issue 15, released on 11 October 2023 with Ajak Deng on the cover, was "The Yes Issue" — dedicated, in Kroslakova's words, to "the mavericks, disruptors and rebels who dare to ask the difficult questions and spark change," celebrating power and positivity across fashion, tech, art and life. In late 2023 the publisher announced an expansion from quarterly to ten issues a year from 2024, citing a growing reader base, expanded distribution partnerships and the magazine's success in connecting "leaders of the style and culture industry" with the wider community.
The flagship T Magazine's standing underwrites the licence: the New York Times Style Magazine won the US National Magazine Award for General Excellence, Service and Lifestyle in 2021, and its international editions have included T China, T Japan, T Singapore, T Qatar and T Spain.
The licensing model
T Australia operates under a licensing agreement with The New York Times Licensing Group — the mechanism by which the T brand has extended internationally. The flagship T: The New York Times Style Magazine is published by The New York Times Company eleven times a year, covering fashion, culture, beauty, design and travel; its licensed editions have included T China (since 2015), T Japan (since 2015), T Singapore (2016–2021), T Qatar (2010–2021) and T Spain (2016–2020), with T Australia joining the roster in 2021.
The licence gives the Australian edition access to the flagship's coverage, photographs and commentary, which Kroslakova's team combines with original regional content. Advertising for the Australian edition is sold through Publisher's Internationale. The model — global brand authority plus local editorial control — is the same one that underpins the Cond\u00e9 Nast licensed titles in Australia, and it allowed T Australia to launch with instant prestige in a market that had just lost several of its established fashion magazines.
Kroslakova's publishing background
Katarina Kroslakova came to T Australia with a career spanning custom publishing, newspapers and luxury magazines. As managing director of content agency KK Ink and custom publishing house KK Press, and editor of Maserati's Il Tridente magazine, she had built a business creating publications for luxury brands. As a journalist she had edited The Australian Financial Review's Life & Leisure and Luxury magazines and written a column for Harper's Bazaar. That combination — editorial credibility and an entrepreneur's control of the business — shaped T Australia's independent structure: a licensed global brand published by its local editor rather than by a publishing conglomerate.
Content and Features
Each issue showcases culture, fashion, food, wine, architecture, interiors, travel, craftsmanship and society, capturing what the launch statement called "the definitive collections and trends that respond to today's global narrative, from emerging artists to iconic creators." The Australian edition adds a local spin: how Australians are feeling, what they are wearing, where they want to travel, what they like to eat and drink, and which live performances they plan to see. Interviews with actors, chefs, artists, performers and architects sit alongside fashion shoots and opinion pieces from Australian creatives.
The digital platform at taustralia.com.au features digital-only content, recurring columns by specialist contributors, deeper dives into magazine features with behind-the-scenes footage and shoot galleries, video content through the T: TV channel, and VIP access to live events.
Coverage and Audience
T Australia is distributed nationally through newsagents and subscriptions at $14.95 an issue, with ten issues a year from 2024. Its audience is the culturally engaged, affluent reader — the "influential audience" the publisher identified in The New York Times' Australian digital readership — interested in fashion, culture, design and travel with both local authority and global context.
Ownership
T Australia is published under licence from The New York Times Licensing Group by Katarina Kroslakova, who serves as publisher and editor-in-chief through her content businesses. The magazine is based in Sydney, New South Wales.
The digital ecosystem
The launch of taustralia.com.au was presented as a "360-degree approach to print and digital," designed to meet audiences across digital channels, print and live events. The platform's digital-only content includes recurring columns by specialist contributors, deeper dives into magazine features with behind-the-scenes footage and photo-shoot galleries, and video through the T: TV channel — alongside VIP access to live events and invitations. The digital operation was positioned from the start as a peer of the print magazine rather than an afterthought, reflecting the behaviour of the culturally engaged audience the brand courts.
Digital Presence
The magazine's digital home, taustralia.com.au, carries digital-only columns, behind-the-scenes video, shoot galleries and event invitations between issues. The brand maintains active social media channels and the T: TV video channel, and its live events give readers VIP access to the culture and style world the magazine covers.
