About Triple M Warragul

Triple M Warragul

Triple M Warragul — known across its region as Triple M Gippsland — is a commercial radio station broadcasting mainstream rock to Gippsland in eastern Victoria, Australia. Operating under the callsign 3SEA on 94.3 MHz from Warragul with a 97.9 MHz repeater at Traralgon, the station is owned by Southern Cross Austereo as part of the Triple M network. Launched in 2002 as Sea FM, it has worn four brand identities in two decades — Sea FM, Star FM, Hit Gippsland and, since July 2020, Triple M — with the rock rebrand delivering a dramatic lift in local listening.

Overview

Triple M Gippsland broadcasts as "Gippsland's Triple M — 94.3 & 97.9 Triple M", with its primary 94.3 MHz signal (7 kW) serving Warragul and West Gippsland and the 97.9 MHz repeater covering Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley. The format is mainstream rock — the Triple M network's signature blend of classic and modern rock — with local breakfast and daytime programming complemented by networked Triple M shows. The station broadcasts from studios in Traralgon, having relocated there in 2023.

The station's survey performance since the Triple M rebrand has been striking. In Warragul's Survey 1 of 2022, Triple M recorded an 18.6 share in breakfast, far ahead of ABC Gippsland on 6.6 and 3GG on 5.7 — with SCA reporting a 79 per cent lift in audience cume since the 2020 rebrand and wins in all dayparts.

Few regional rebrands have paid off so decisively. The station's journey through four identities in eighteen years — from Sea FM's supplementary-licence beginnings through the Star and Hit eras to its current rock incarnation — mirrors the consolidation and brand rationalisation of Australian regional radio itself. Each change reflected its owner's network strategy of the moment; the Triple M identity is the first that feels native to Gippsland rather than imposed from a network template.

History

The station commenced broadcasting on 3 May 2002 as 94.3 Sea FM, a supplementary FM licence to the heritage AM station 3GG, with the callsign 3SEA encoding its Sea FM identity. On 4 July 2005 it relaunched as Star FM, aligning with Macquarie Regional RadioWorks' other Victorian stations while retaining a contemporary hit radio format. On 15 December 2016 it was rebranded again, this time as Hit Gippsland, joining SCA's Hit Network with hit music and networked programs including Carrie & Tommy and Hughesy & Kate.

The decisive change came on 20 July 2020, when the station flipped formats to mainstream rock as Triple M. The Hit Network programming was replaced by the Triple M network's lineup, and the station's identity was rebuilt around rock music and the Triple M brand. Notably, the station had already been broadcasting Triple M's AFL coverage even while part of the Hit Network — as the only SCA-owned station in the Gippsland region, it carried the football while its network stablemates played hits.

The 2020 flip was part of a broader SCA strategy of aligning regional stations with their strongest network brands. For Gippsland, the logic was compelling: the region's demographics, its football obsession and its rock-music heritage made Triple M a more natural fit than the youth-oriented Hit brand. The audience response vindicated the call — a 79 per cent lift in cumulative audience is an extraordinary result in any market, let alone a regional one, and it turned a middling hit-music station into the market's dominant commercial force.

In 2023 Triple M relocated its broadcasting operations to studios on Coonoc Road in Traralgon, a facility shared with Ace Radio's TRFM and Gippsland Gold as well as SCA's television operations — consolidating Gippsland's commercial radio presence under one roof.

Programming

Triple M Gippsland's schedule combines local and network programming in the Triple M regional model. Local breakfast anchors the weekday lineup from the Traralgon studios, with local daytime content keeping the station rooted in Gippsland news, sport and community life. The local shows carry the issues that matter in the region — from Latrobe Valley energy debates to West Gippsland dairy prices to the fortunes of the local footy leagues — while the networked hours deliver the rock music depth and national personalities that define the Triple M brand. Networked Triple M programming fills other dayparts, bringing the network's rock music curation, comedy and sports talk to the region.

AFL coverage is a cornerstone: the station broadcasts Triple M's football coverage, serving one of Australian rules heartland's most passionate regions. The combination of rock music, local voices and football proved potent — the 2022 survey results showed audience growth in every daypart following the rebrand, with SCA's regional content chief crediting the team's fiercely local approach. In Gippsland, where local football leagues command tribal loyalties and the AFL is followed with near-religious devotion, the station's football rights give it an appointment-listening franchise that music alone cannot deliver.

Coverage and Audience

The station's 94.3 MHz signal (7 kW) serves Warragul, Drouin and West Gippsland, while the 97.9 MHz Traralgon repeater extends coverage across the Latrobe Valley — Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Churchill — and into central Gippsland. The combined footprint covers the densely populated western end of Gippsland, the Latrobe Valley's industrial cities and the agricultural districts between. This is a region of contrasts — the commuter belt of Warragul and Drouin within reach of Melbourne, the power-industry cities of the Latrobe Valley, the dairy country of West Gippsland — and the station's rock format and local programming are calibrated to the tradies, commuters, farmers and footy fans who make up its audience.

The Warragul Survey 1, 2022 results provide the clearest audience picture: Triple M led breakfast with 18.6, dominated across dayparts, and had grown its cumulative audience by 79 per cent since the 2020 rebrand. These figures come from the Xtra Insights regional survey series rather than the continuous metropolitan ratings system, but they confirm the station as a transformed force in its market.

Ownership

Triple M Warragul is owned by Southern Cross Austereo (through Votraint No. 691 Pty Ltd) and operated as part of the Triple M network — Australia's largest rock radio network, spanning metropolitan and regional stations across the country. SCA is one of Australia's two major commercial radio groups, alongside ARN. The station's Traralgon studios on Coonoc Road are shared with Ace Radio's TRFM and Gippsland Gold, an unusual co-location of rival groups' stations reflecting the economics of regional broadcasting. For listeners, the arrangement is invisible — Triple M Gippsland's on-air identity is pure Triple M network, backed by SCA's national rock brand — but it illustrates how regional radio increasingly pools infrastructure while competing fiercely for ears.

Digital Presence

Wikipedia lists www.triplem.com.au/gippsland as the station's website, within the Triple M network's online home; the address could not be independently load-verified for this profile, so it is recorded here as an attributed claim. The station streams through the Triple M network's digital platforms and the LiSTNR app, SCA's audio platform, giving Gippsland's Triple M national digital reach. The station maintains social media presences promoting its local announcers, competitions and AFL coverage, keeping the Warragul-born station connected to its audience across the region and beyond. Through LiSTNR, SCA's digital audio platform, the station's content sits alongside podcasts and catch-up audio from across the Triple M network — giving a station that began life as a small supplementary licence in West Gippsland a national digital shopfront while its FM signals keep it rooted in the towns it serves.
