About TVSN

TVSN

TVSN is Australia's home shopping television network: the 24-hour shopping channel broadcasting live retail programming from its purpose-built studios at Innovations Park, Frenchs Forest, in Sydney. Launched on 4 December 1995, it is Australia's only TV shopping network — three decades of live product demonstrations, celebrity brands and "but wait, there's more" television. Owned by Direct Group Pty Ltd, TVSN broadcasts on Foxtel and free-to-air as a datacast service (Channel 16 in metropolitan areas), streaming via tvsn.com.au and the TVSN Now app. Important note: in October 2026, Direct Group advised customers it was seeking new investment or a buyer for the business and began a closing-down sale; the company stated the channel would continue to operate while a buyer was sought, abandoning the closure process if one was found. The outlet's ongoing status should be treated as uncertain pending the outcome — the thirty-year story may yet have another chapter.

Overview

TVSN is an Australian television shopping network — a retailer with three channels to market: television, web and print. Launched on 4 December 1995, TVSN Pty Ltd is wholly owned by Direct Group Pty Ltd, and all staff are based at Innovations Park, Frenchs Forest, Sydney NSW. TVSN describes itself as Australia's only TV shopping network, showcasing products, prestigious brands and international trends. The network reaches over 2.5 million homes via subscription television (Foxtel, and previously Austar and Optus TV) and anyone with internet access, and produces 84 hours of live television every week from its digital studios — live every day from 9:30am to 9:30pm EST. With over 8,000 products available at any one time and approximately 1,000 new products added each month, viewers can shop across Fashion, Health, Beauty, Kitchen, Electrical, Homewares and Jewellery departments at tvsn.com.au, 24 hours a day, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and interest-free part payments on most products. Products are distributed from a 5.3-hectare facility in Frenchs Forest — the warehouse behind the screen.

History

TVSN launched on 4 December 1995 — home shopping television for the pay TV age. In the early years it was a subscription-only service, carried on Foxtel, Austar and Optus TV as part of basic packages, and free-to-air via the Optus C1 satellite. For seventeen years, TVSN was a pay television proposition: the shopping channel subscribers stumbled upon and stayed with — the background hum of the lounge room, the demonstration that became a purchase.

The free-to-air era began on 24 September 2012, when Network Ten and TVSN partnered to broadcast the channel as a datacast service on LCN 14 in metropolitan areas — at least 12 hours of live Australian content every day, fully produced by TVSN, featuring brands such as Toshiba, Napoleon Perdis, Royal Doulton and Charlie Brown. The move followed Seven's TV4ME and Nine's Extra into datacasting as a revenue stream — the networks discovering that shopping channels paid for spectrum. Network Ten's chief operating officer called TVSN a strong, well-established brand and a great partner, looking forward to a long, successful relationship including new opportunities for Ten's advertisers. From December 2012 to July 2016, regional Network Ten affiliate Southern Cross Ten broadcast TVSN to regional viewers on LCN 54, with Southern Cross Austereo also carrying it on LCN 64 in Tasmania and LCN 74 in Darwin.

Affiliation shuffles moved the channel repeatedly: on 1 July 2016, Southern Cross Ten became a Nine affiliate and WIN Television became the Ten affiliate, so TVSN moved to LCN 84 across regional Queensland, southern NSW and the ACT, Griffith, regional Victoria, Mildura, Tasmania, eastern South Australia and regional Western Australia via WIN. Northern NSW and the Gold Coast, Darwin, Broken Hill and the Spencer Gulf relaunched TVSN on 20 December 2016 on LCNs 57 and 75. On 30 August 2018, TVSN went MPEG-4 in WIN areas to prepare for the launch of Sky News on WIN. On 16 September 2020, TVSN moved from Channel 14 to Channel 16 in metropolitan areas following the launch of Network Ten's 10 Shake. Through every shuffle, the shopping continued — the channel number changed, the demonstrations didn't.

Then, in October 2026, the shock: The Age reported that Direct Group had emailed customers advising it had spent months seeking new investment or a buyer, without success — and that TVSN was holding a closing-down sale. Customers were urged to use gift cards, vouchers and store credit: "We recommend shopping early as quantities are limited and there will be no restocks. Once it's gone, it's gone." Direct Group's Reader's Digest business was also put up for sale, with the owners reportedly seeking $30 million for the entire business or sale of individual assets. Executive chairman Bernie Brookes said the business was profitable but had been experiencing cash flow pressure since the exit of private equity owners Champ Private Equity. The sale was expected to attract interest from media companies, overseas home-shopping operators, marketplaces and major retailers. The parent company stated the channel would continue to operate while a buyer was sought, and would abandon the closure process if one was found — the closing-down sale ending the moment a buyer appeared. Based in Frenchs Forest, Direct Group employs about 250 full-time and part-time staff — the people behind the thirty-year shopping story.

Programming and Content

TVSN broadcasts live shopping programming every day from 9:30am to 9:30pm EST — 84 hours of live television a week. Each hour-long show is a ride through product features and benefits, brand stories, the product's journey to TVSN, international guests, customer testimonials, demonstrations and the occasional blooper. The departments span Fashion, Health, Beauty, Kitchen, Electrical, Homewares and Jewellery, with over 8,000 products on offer and around 1,000 new products each month. The network runs its own 24/7 call centre and warehousing from Frenchs Forest, employs product buyers, production staff, broadcast operators, engineers, programmers, marketers and post-production teams, and sometimes brings customers into the shows with live studio audiences for its biggest events. It is retail as entertainment: the demonstration, the testimonial, the countdown.

Coverage and Audience

TVSN broadcasts nationally: on Foxtel as part of basic packages, free-to-air via metropolitan datacasting (Channel 16) and regional WIN and Southern Cross Austereo services, free-to-air via the Optus C1 satellite, and streaming via tvsn.com.au and the TVSN Now app (Android TV, Samsung, LG, Apple TV). The network reaches over 2.5 million homes via subscription television. Its audience is the home shopper: disproportionately female, comforted by the 30-day money-back guarantee and the interest-free part payments — the viewer who shops from the lounge room.

Ownership

TVSN Pty Ltd is wholly owned by Direct Group Pty Ltd, the Sydney-based direct marketing group led by executive chairman Bernie Brookes. Direct Group also owns the Innovations catalogue business and acquired the Australian and New Zealand Reader's Digest business (including Handyman magazine, which folded in 2018) in 2017; it previously owned EziBuy. In October 2026, Direct Group advised it was seeking new investment or a buyer for TVSN and began a closing-down sale process, while stating the channel would continue operating pending a sale.

Digital Presence

TVSN sells at tvsn.com.au — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — and streams live via the website and the TVSN Now app. TVSN: Australia's TV shopping network — live from Frenchs Forest since 4 December 1995. Thirty years of "but wait, there's more" — now seeking a buyer to write the next chapter.
