About UCFM

UCFM

UCFM (callsign 1A12) is an independent student radio station broadcasting from the University of Canberra's Bruce campus on 87.8 MHz FM. Launched on 10 August 1994 as CUe FM, the station has spent three decades as a student voice for the university and North Canberra — a college-radio outlet for Top 40 pop, indie and alternative music with news and current affairs, run by student and alumni volunteers. Relaunched in 2021 under the university's Faculty of Arts and Design as "Canberra's #1 Student Station," it celebrated 30 years of broadcasting in August 2024.

Overview

UCFM broadcasts on 87.8 MHz FM across Belconnen and North Canberra from studios on the University of Canberra's Bruce campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The station transmits under a narrowcast licence — not a full-power education/community broadcast licence — with a broadcast range of approximately two kilometres surrounding the university's main campus (transmitter at 35.238167°S 149.08557°E). The frequency has been 87.8 MHz since 2009; from 1994 to 2008 the station transmitted on 87.7 MHz. The station's names have evolved with its eras: CUe FM (1994–2015), 87.8 UCFM (2015–2021), and UCFM from the 2021 relaunch. The format is a professionally consulted college-radio niche: adult album alternative with local news and talk radio, much of the music from Australian artists — Top 40 pop, indie and alternative in the station's earlier positioning.

History

CUe FM: 1994–2015

The station began transmitting on 10 August 1994 as CUe FM, operated by a student society under the governance of the University of Canberra Union (UCU). Its first studio was in the UC Refectory, in Building 1 of the Bruce campus. The aim was to create a social network for students — a voice for the university's students to speak out, be heard, and make Canberra aware of their presence — while burnishing the university's image through the enterprise.

By 2015 the station was run by a team of student and alumni volunteers and had rebranded as 87.8 UCFM, transitioning to a predominantly music-based broadcast as "Canberra's Alternative": Top 40 pop, indie and alternative music, transmitting across North Canberra from a studio in The Hub, the central complex on the university's main concourse. Notably, the station received no funding from the UCU or the university, covering operating costs through sponsorships, donations, membership fees and a minimal amount of advertising.

The FAD era: 2019–present

From 2019 the university moved the station under the governance of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD), and FAD officially relaunched it in 2021 as UCFM — with a new tagline, "Canberra's #1 Student Station," and purpose-built studios in Building 9, placing the station alongside much of the university's communications and media production programs. The relaunch aligned the station with the university's teaching mission: a working radio station embedded in the faculty that trains the next generation of media professionals. UCFM partners with The Owl, bringing content produced by the university's Journalism and Sports Media students to air — a direct pipeline between the classroom and the broadcast. The station acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as the traditional custodians of the lands where the Bruce campus and UCFM studios sit. ### The narrowcast controversy

Unlike other Australian campus radio stations, UCFM does not transmit on a full-power education/community broadcast licence but is limited to a narrowcast licence — and the limitation has been a running grievance. Close-proximity allocation by the ACMA of other narrowcast licences has caused interference with UCFM's signal, and numerous applications for a full upgrade have been refused. Despite more than two decades of continuous broadcasting — making it one of Canberra's original narrowcast licensees — the regulator did not reserve and offer UCFM a suitable frequency for a full education/community licence in the Canberra Licence Area Plan. Instead, the ACMA showed preference for allocating the scarce FM spectrum to existing ABC, SBS and commercial licence holders' second transmitters in the Tuggeranong Valley, and to newer niche community FM stations dedicated to the arts, multiculturalism and religion. The episode illustrates the spectrum scarcity shaping Canberra's crowded FM band — and the structural disadvantage facing a long-running student station that has never held a full community licence. On 10 August 2024, UCFM celebrated its 30th year of broadcasting with a "Birthday Bash" promoted through the station's website — three decades on from the CUe FM launch in the UC Refectory.

Programming and Content

The station's purpose, as described in its published profiles, was to create a social network for University of Canberra students — a voice for students to speak out with, be heard, and make Canberra aware of their presence — while supporting the university's image through the enterprise. The program schedule illustrates the range: Tuesdays carry Aus Music Mornings, Audio Stories, Back in the UCCR, Tried But True?, Recently Added, The Wrap Up, The Real Radio Show, the CBR Music Hour, In Tunes and the evening Alternate Soundscape (alt-rock/indie); Wednesdays feature On the Record, Mixtape, The Lunch Hour, The UCOMMS Podcast, Listening to CBR Voices, The Now Now, Ready to Roll and Game Geek Out, and Midweek Pop (pop/electro) — with some programs alternating on even and odd weeks of semester, and the schedule distinguishing live, recorded/podcast, playlist and replay content. Program names like Back in the UCCR, The UCOMMS Podcast and Listening to CBR Voices reflect the station's deep roots in the university's communications and media programs, whose students produce much of the output. Student presenters host music, talk and specialist shows across the week, and the station publishes student-produced programs and podcasts on its website and on streaming platforms including Spotify — recent episodes including The Real Radio Show, The Now Now, Tried But True?, The Wrap Up and The UCOMMS Podcast — extending its output beyond the broadcast schedule. Individual shows have developed their own followings: Tried, But True?, hosted by Jasper, invites listeners in for "a non-professional opinion from a random 20 year old," trying something new each episode — from an MCU recap ahead of Avengers: Doomsday to mock court sessions settling pop-culture disputes — while The Real Radio Show brings interviews, music, stories and news from around Canberra. The positioning as "Canberra's Alternative" reflects point-of-difference programming aimed at 18-to-40-year-old listeners underserved by commercial formats.

Coverage and Audience

The 87.8 MHz FM signal covers Belconnen and North Canberra, with online streaming extending the station's reach to students, alumni and supporters beyond the broadcast area. The audience is the University of Canberra community — students, staff and alumni — plus North Canberra's younger listeners drawn to the alternative music mix. As a campus station, its cultural role includes training: generations of student volunteers have learnt broadcasting, production and media skills at UCFM.

Ownership

UCFM is operated under the governance of the University of Canberra's Faculty of Arts and Design, having previously been run by a student society under the University of Canberra Union. It is licensed by the ACMA as a community broadcasting service (callsign 1A12). The station is volunteer-run, with operating costs historically covered through sponsorships, donations, membership fees and limited advertising.

Digital Presence

Wikipedia lists ucfm.com.au as the station's website, which hosts the live stream, program information and podcasts. The station streams its on-air program continuously online through links on its website, Facebook page and TuneIn, and via the iHeartRadio platform — alongside its two-kilometre FM footprint around the Bruce campus — and publishes student-produced programming and podcasts on audio streaming platforms including Spotify. Published contacts include ucfm@canberra.edu.au and music@ucfm.com.au for music submissions. The digital platforms extend the campus station's reach well beyond Belconnen — to alumni, prospective students and alternative-music listeners across Canberra and beyond.
