About 94.9 The Rock (CKGE)

94.9 The Rock (CKGE)

94.9 The Rock, broadcasting on 94.9 MHz as CKGE-FM, is an active rock radio station based in Oshawa, Ontario, and owned by Durham Radio Inc. Operating from studios at 1200 Airport Boulevard in Oshawa, the station positions itself as the Greater Toronto Area's rock station, reporting as a Toronto-market station to industry airplay monitors. Its history stretches back to 1957 and winds through easy listening, adult contemporary, dance, and hot AC incarnations before the launch of the Rock format in 2003 made it the GTA's only active rock station.

Overview

CKGE-FM broadcasts at 94.9 MHz as a Class B station with an effective radiated power of 50,000 watts from a tower 147.5 metres above average terrain. Its broadcast area is listed as the Greater Toronto Area, and the station actively targets Toronto audiences despite its Oshawa licence — it reports as a Toronto station to Mediabase and Nielsen BDS. The active rock format blends current rock releases with established rock titles, and the station has invested in recognizable rock-radio personalities to anchor its schedule.

The station is part of Durham Radio's Oshawa cluster alongside CKDO and CJKX (KX96) in neighbouring Ajax, with all three stations operating from the Oshawa Airport terminal building. Its branding as "94.9 The Rock" dates to June 2003, when Durham Radio relaunched the station after acquiring it from Corus Entertainment.

History

The station signed on September 12, 1957, launched by Lakeland Broadcasting as CKLB-FM on 93.5 MHz, a sister station to AM outlet CKLB airing an easy listening format. In 1966 the station changed its callsign to CKQS-FM and moved to its current 94.9 frequency later that year. In 1979, CKLB and CKQS were acquired by Grant Broadcasting, and CKQS changed callsigns once more, becoming CKQT-FM. Grant Broadcasting was subsequently acquired by Power Broadcasting in 1990.

The 1990s brought the station's first major format reinventions. In 1993 it moved to an adult contemporary format, adopted its current CKGE callsign, and branded itself "The Edge." In 1995 it rebranded as "Magic 94.9." In 1996, CKLB — by then using the CKDO callsign — began simulcasting CKGE's programming, an arrangement that would recur over the years. In 1999 the station began targeting Toronto audiences more deliberately, with a modern adult contemporary format incorporating adult album alternative selections.

In late 2000, Power Broadcasting was acquired by Corus Entertainment; the CRTC approved the sale on March 24, 2000, and Corus took control on April 13. On February 16, 2001, at 9:49 a.m., Corus dropped the Magic format and brand, adding the station to its Energy dance-music simulcast. The station simulcast CING Burlington starting February 19, with mid-days anchored locally. But the Energy era in Oshawa was short-lived: in 2002, Corus's Hamilton stations swapped frequencies, and with Energy flagship CING now on a signal that more effectively covered Toronto, the Oshawa signal became redundant. On May 3, 2002, at 9 a.m., CKGE returned as "Magic @ 94.9 FM, Today's Best Music Mix," with a modern adult contemporary format.

The decisive change came in 2003. On April 23, the CRTC approved the sale of CKDO and CKGE-FM by Corus Entertainment to Durham Radio Inc., owner of CJKX-FM "KX96" in nearby Ajax; Durham took control in early June. On June 12, "Magic at 94.9" relaunched as "94.9 The Rock," with a format built on rock music from the 1960s to the present day. On September 1, CJKX joined CKDO and CKGE at the new shared studios at 1200 Airport Boulevard.

The Rock era brought stability and a sharper competitive edge. In 2012, Doug Elliott was hired as program director, and the station's format execution and on-air lineup were rebuilt into a competitive Toronto rock station with the addition of Craig Venn and Lucky in mornings, Lori Ann in middays, Elliott himself in afternoon drive, and longtime Toronto rock radio host Lee "Beef" Eckley, previously of CILQ and CHUM-FM. In May 2018, broadcaster Dean Blundell joined Craig Venn and Lucky as a contributor to "Rock Mornings." In October 2022, Christian Tanna — the drummer of 1990s Canadian rock band I Mother Earth — joined the station to host "Generation Next Radio," a program devoted to new and emerging rock musicians. In May 2023, the station added Ed the Sock, the veteran MuchMusic personality, as the host of an overnight program, reviving the overnight radio format in the GTA.

Programming

94.9 The Rock's active rock format centres on current and recent rock releases alongside core rock library titles, with an emphasis on guitar-driven music spanning alternative, hard rock, and metal. The station's positioning as the Greater Toronto market's only active rock station gives it a distinct lane in a market where rock listeners have few dedicated FM options.

The on-air lineup has been built around established rock-radio names. "Rock Mornings" with Craig Venn and Lucky, joined by contributor Dean Blundell, anchors the weekday schedule, with Lori Ann in middays and program director Doug Elliott in drive. The emphasis on personality-driven dayparts reflects the station's strategy of competing as a full-service rock station for the Toronto market rather than a jukebox-style outlet. Specialty programming includes "Generation Next Radio" with Christian Tanna, spotlighting new and emerging rock musicians, and the Ed the Sock overnight show. The station's studios at Oshawa Airport's terminal building at 1200 Airport Boulevard house the station alongside Durham Radio sister stations CKDO and KX96.

Coverage and audience

As a Class B station with 50,000 watts of effective radiated power from a 147.5-metre tower, CKGE's 94.9 signal covers Oshawa and the Durham Region while reaching into the eastern Greater Toronto Area. The station's broadcast area is officially the GTA, and it reports as a Toronto station to Mediabase and Nielsen BDS, reflecting its deliberate targeting of Toronto rock audiences. Its transmitter and studio base at 1200 Airport Boulevard in Oshawa places its operations in the Durham Region, east of Toronto.

The station's competitive position is unusual: as the only active rock station in the Greater Toronto market, it faces limited direct format competition, competing more broadly with Toronto's mainstream rock, alternative, and classic rock signals for rock-leaning listeners. Specific current audience ratings are not publicly confirmed.

Ownership

CKGE-FM is owned by Durham Radio Inc., an independent Ontario broadcaster whose holdings include CKDO (also in Oshawa) and CJKX-FM "KX96" in Ajax. Durham Radio acquired CKGE and CKDO from Corus Entertainment in 2003, with CRTC approval granted on April 23 of that year, and consolidated the stations at 1200 Airport Boulevard the following September. The company's ownership lineage for the station runs from Lakeland Broadcasting (1957) through Grant Broadcasting (1979) and Power Broadcasting (1990) to Corus Entertainment (2000) and Durham Radio (2003–present). The station operates under standard CRTC commercial radio licence conditions.

94.9 The Rock streams live through its official website, therock.fm, which also carries station information, show details, and promotional content. Its stream is also carried by third-party radio aggregators. Contact information listed by radio directories includes the station's Oshawa studios and contest lines.
