About Brantford Expositor

Brantford Expositor

The Brantford Expositor is a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Brantford, Ontario, and the paper of record for the city and the County of Brant. Founded in 1852, it has been published continuously for more than 170 years — one of the longest uninterrupted publishing runs in Canadian journalism — chronicling Brantford's evolution from a Grand River mill town into the self-styled "Telephone City" and a modern southwestern Ontario manufacturing and education hub. Owned by Postmedia Network, the Expositor publishes six days a week, Monday to Saturday, serving Brantford as well as Paris, Burford and the rest of Brant County, and also publishes Your Brant Connection, a free weekly community paper delivered to 52,500 homes across the region.

Overview

Brantford — a city of about 105,000 on the Grand River, roughly midway between Hamilton and London — carries a rich industrial and inventive heritage: it was here that Alexander Graham Bell conceived the telephone, earning the city its "Telephone City" nickname, and here that major manufacturers like Massey-Harris and Cockshutt built the farm implements that opened the prairies. The Brantford Expositor is the city's daily newspaper and its institutional memory: the newsroom covers Brantford city council, the County of Brant, the courts, health care (including the Brantford General Hospital), education (including Wilfrid Laurier University's Brantford campus and Conestoga College), Six Nations of the Grand River — the largest First Nations reserve in Canada, adjacent to the city — and the OHL's Brantford Bulldogs.

The paper's identity is that of a classic Ontario community daily with unusual longevity: published without interruption since 1852, deeply embedded in the civic life of the Grand River region, and historically boasting one of the highest market penetrations of any Ontario daily — reaching, at its peak, more than 70 percent of adults in its coverage area.

History

The Expositor was founded in 1852 in a Brantford that was just finding its industrial footing on the Grand River. Through the following 170-plus years it documented every chapter of the city's story: the railway age, the rise of the farm-implement giants, the telephone experiments of the 1870s, the labour movement, two world wars, the post-war manufacturing boom, the industrial restructuring of the late twentieth century, and the city's twenty-first-century reinvention around education, health care and diversified manufacturing. The paper's own history notes that it has published continuously without interruption — a remarkable claim few Canadian newspapers can match.

The Expositor's newsroom holds a footnote in Canadian labour history: in the mid-1950s, its unionization marked the Newspaper Guild's first foray outside Toronto, as the young union expanded beyond the Toronto Telegram, the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star to organize the Brantford paper's employees — an early sign of the professionalization of journalism's workforce in smaller Ontario markets.

Through the twentieth century the paper passed through the ownership of Canada's newspaper chains before arriving at Postmedia Network in 2010. Its physical presence in the city changed with the industry: in 2010 the newspaper moved from its longtime downtown home at 53 Dalhousie Street to a business park at 195 Henry Street, and by April 2022 it had no local office at all — a familiar story of the digital era. The paper is now printed in Hamilton at the Hamilton Spectator's presses, part of Postmedia's consolidation of printing across southwestern Ontario.

Content and Sections

The modern Brantford Expositor is built around the Grand River region. City hall coverage anchors the news pages, with reporters tracking Brantford's council, budgets, planning, policing and the infrastructure of a growing city, and extending to the County of Brant's council and the town of Paris. The courts beat covers the region's legal community; health reporting follows the Brantford General Hospital and the region's health services; education coverage spans the school boards, Laurier Brantford and Conestoga.

The paper gives sustained attention to Six Nations of the Grand River and the Indigenous issues of the region — land claims, governance and community life — reflecting the reserve's proximity and importance. Business coverage follows the region's manufacturing base, agriculture and the growing education sector. Sports coverage centres on the OHL's Brantford Bulldogs — the relocated Hamilton franchise that brought major junior hockey back to the city — alongside the region's deep minor-hockey culture, lacrosse (the sport's Indigenous roots run deep in the region) and community athletics. Opinion pages carry editorials, columns and letters from across Brant, and feature sections cover arts, food, homes, health and community life. Your Brant Connection, the free Thursday weekly, extends the paper's reach to every household in the coverage area with community news, events and advertising.

Coverage and Audience

The Expositor serves Brantford and the County of Brant — a market of roughly 150,000 people across the city, Paris, Burford, St. George and the rural townships. Its audience is the region's manufacturing workforce, health-care and education professionals, agricultural community, Six Nations residents and the small-business owners of the Grand River valley.

The paper has historically claimed one of the highest readership penetrations of any Ontario daily — reaching more than 70 percent of adults 18 and over in its coverage area at its peak, with a daily paid circulation of about 20,000 (15,349 on weekdays and 16,048 on Saturdays as of 2011). As the region's only daily newspaper, its civic role is central: the primary source of sustained accountability journalism for Brantford's municipal government and the region's institutions. Its archives, reaching back to 1852, document the telephone experiments, the implement works, the labour struggles and the making of the Telephone City.

Ownership

The Brantford Expositor is owned by Postmedia Network Inc., Canada's largest newspaper chain, which acquired it in 2010 as part of its purchase of Canwest's newspaper assets. Within Postmedia, the paper shares national content, digital platforms and corporate services with the chain's other papers — including its southwestern Ontario siblings — while maintaining its Brantford editorial identity under editor Kim Novak. The paper is printed at the Hamilton Spectator's presses as part of Postmedia's regional printing consolidation.

Postmedia itself is publicly traded and majority-owned by the U.S. investment firm Chatham Asset Management. Like its sister papers, the Expositor has experienced newsroom consolidation, the closure of its local office and the centralization of printing as the chain has managed the economics of the digital transition.

Digital Presence

The Expositor's digital edition carries the paper's daily journalism online: breaking news, e-edition access, newsletters, photo galleries and community features, serving readers across the Grand River region and its diaspora. Wikipedia lists the paper's website as brantfordexpositor.ca; the project inventory could not load-verify that domain from its research environment, so it is cited here as an attributed claim rather than an asserted fact. The site operates on Postmedia's shared digital infrastructure, offering digital subscriptions and e-editions.

On social media the paper distributes breaking news, Bulldogs coverage and community stories to a following concentrated in the Brantford region. As of 2026, the Brantford Expositor continues to publish — six days a week in print and daily online — more than 170 years after its founding, still the daily record of the Telephone City.

Founded in 1852, the Expositor is one of Canada's longest continuously published newspapers: more than 170 unbroken years. Through the Grand River mill town, the Telephone City, the manufacturing age and the modern southwestern Ontario city, it has been Brantford and the County of Brant's record — the institutional memory of the region.
