About CHLO 530

CHLO 530

CHLO, broadcasting on 530 AM as "AM 530," is a multilingual radio station licensed to Brampton, Ontario, and serving the Greater Toronto Area. Owned by Evanov Communications, the station airs primarily Punjabi and other South Asian-language programming, with weekend shows in Italian, German, Croatian, Tagalog, Bulgarian, and Spanish. Its studios are on Dundas Street West in Toronto's Eatonville neighbourhood, and its transmitter is on Sixth Line in Halton Hills. The station's long history stretches back to 1953 and includes one of the most storied callsign progressions in Canadian radio — and, in 2021, it became the first AM station in Canada to broadcast in HD Radio.

Overview

CHLO operates on 530 kHz as a Class B station, transmitting with 1,000 watts non-directional by day and reducing to 250 watts at night under restrictions placed on the frequency by international treaty. It is one of only a few commercial radio stations in North America broadcasting on 530 kHz. The call letters stand for "Hello," adopted in January 2019 to replace the long-running CIAO identity. The station's branding is simply "AM 530," and Wikipedia lists am530.ca as the station's website.

The multilingual format reflects the demographics of Brampton and the western GTA, one of the most diverse urban regions in Canada. Most programming is in Punjabi with other South Asian languages, while weekends add European and Filipino-language shows. The station's HD Radio operations on the AM band — a Canadian first — extend its technical footprint into digital broadcasting.

History

The station signed on December 23, 1953, broadcasting on 1090 kHz as CFJB, a daytime-only station owned by broadcaster Fen Job. Job was killed in a car crash in 1956, and his estate sold the station to CHIC Ltd. in 1959; the new callsign CHIC was adopted the following year. The 1960s saw the station build an ethnic broadcasting identity: Alekos Columbos hosted a 90-minute Greek radio show on Saturdays, and Klaas Mulenar preached in Dutch on Sundays, as ethnic programming grew in the schedule. In 1961 the owners launched an FM sister station, CHIC-FM on 102.1 MHz — the station that would eventually become the legendary CFNY-FM.

In 1964, CHIC became a full-time broadcaster and moved to 790 AM. From 1966 to 1969, in an era when almost all radio voices were male, the station tried something distinctive: an all-female disc jockey format under the slogan "Where The Girls Are," with regular newscasts and some features continuing to be voiced by men. In 1977 the FM station adopted the new callsign CFNY-FM, beginning its own storied history.

The AM station's ownership entered a turbulent period in 1979, when the owner went into receivership. The stations were acquired by Civitas Corp., owner of CJMS in Montreal; Civitas became Mutual Communications in 1980, and CHIC adopted the new callsign CKMW. Mutual sold CKMW to Patrick Hurley — incorporated as CKMW Radio Ltd. — in 1983, while CFNY was sold to Selkirk Communications. As CKMW, the AM station adopted the multilingual format it still airs — a format that has now defined the station for four decades, far longer than any of its earlier incarnations. Ownership of CKMW Radio was transferred to Evanov in 1985, bringing the station under the broadcaster that had already made multilingual radio a specialty. The station took the callsign CIAO in 1987, and in 1991 it moved to its current 530 frequency after CJFT in Fort Erie vacated the dial position to convert to the FM band, under CRTC Decision 91-331. The 530 frequency — one of the lowest on the North American AM band — gave the station a distinctive technical identity it retains today. In January 2019 the station adopted its current CHLO callsign, with the letters standing for "Hello": a greeting suited to a station whose business is speaking to many communities.

HD Radio milestone

On June 8, 2021, CHLO became the first AM station in Canada to transition to HD Radio on the AM band — a technical landmark for a band more often associated with decline than innovation. The digital signal runs alongside the analog 530 kHz transmission, bringing the station's multilingual programming onto digital receivers. The conversion was implemented with a Nautel NX3 transmitter, according to the manufacturer's case study on the project.

The station's technical evolution may continue: on June 18, 2026, Dufferin Communications (Evanov) applied to the CRTC to add a new FM rebroadcasting transmitter at 103.9 MHz in Brampton to rebroadcast CHLO's AM signal. The 103.9 frequency was formerly used by the now-defunct Dufferin station CIRR-FM Toronto and sits second-adjacent to CIDC-FM Orangeville at 103.5 MHz; the application also proposed relocating CIRR-FM's transmitter from Toronto to CHLO-AM's tower in Georgetown, which is owned by Dufferin. The outcome of the application is not publicly confirmed.

Programming

CHLO's multilingual format is anchored by Punjabi and other South Asian-language programming through the week, serving the large South Asian communities of Brampton, Mississauga, and the wider GTA. Weekend programming broadens the linguistic mix with shows in Italian, German, Croatian, Tagalog, Bulgarian, and Spanish. The format places the station among the GTA's multilingual outlets serving immigrant and diaspora communities with a blend of music, talk, and community information in their own languages — a role the station has played in one form or another since the Greek and Dutch broadcasts of the 1960s. Specific current program titles and hosts are not independently confirmed.

Coverage and audience

As a 1,000-watt daytime (250-watt nighttime) AM station on 530 kHz, CHLO's signal is oriented to the western Greater Toronto Area, with its Brampton licence and Halton Hills transmitter site positioning it for the communities where its multilingual audience is concentrated. The low nighttime power reflects the international treaty protections on the 530 frequency, which limit the station's after-dark reach. The 2021 HD Radio conversion gives the station a digital presence on the AM band, and the proposed 103.9 FM rebroadcaster would, if approved, add an FM signal in Brampton. Current audience figures are not publicly confirmed.

Ownership

CHLO is owned by Evanov Communications, the independent Canadian broadcaster founded by Bill Evanov. The station sits within Evanov's Ontario cluster alongside CIDC-FM (Z103.5) in Orangeville, CIRR-FM in Toronto, and CKDX-FM in Newmarket, among other holdings in Manitoba and Quebec. Evanov acquired the station's licensee, CKMW Radio Ltd., in 1985, and the company has operated the multilingual format ever since — making CHLO one of the longest-running ethnic radio services under a single owner in the Toronto market. The station's ownership lineage runs from Fen Job (1953) through CHIC Ltd. (1959), the receivership-era owners, Civitas/Mutual Communications (1979), and Patrick Hurley's CKMW Radio Ltd. (1983) to Evanov (1985–present). The station's ownership lineage runs from Fen Job (1953) through CHIC Ltd. Digital presence

The station maintains a live webcast, and Wikipedia lists am530.ca as its website. Its HD Radio signal on the AM band represents its most distinctive digital asset — the first such deployment in Canada, and a notable technical investment in a band where few broadcasters have pursued digital conversion. The station's stream is also carried by third-party radio aggregators. A dedicated standalone mobile app for the station is not publicly confirmed.
