About Move 100 (CIOO)
Move 100 (CIOO)
Move 100 (CIOO-FM) is Halifax's adult contemporary radio station — a Bell Media outlet broadcasting on 100.1 MHz with 100,000 watts, branded "Today's Best Variety." The station signed on November 1, 1977, as C100, and for more than four decades was one of Halifax's heritage AC brands. On December 27, 2020, Bell Media flipped it — along with nine other stations across Canada — to the "Move Radio" network, shifting from adult contemporary to hot adult contemporary. The call sign looks like "100," a nod to the original C100 brand.
Overview
CIOO-FM is a commercial FM station licensed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, owned by Bell Media through its Bell Media Radio division. It broadcasts on 100.1 MHz with 100,000 watts (Class C), with studios at Russell and Agricola Streets in Halifax (behind sister station CJCH-DT) and a transmitter on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park.
The station's format is adult contemporary (hot AC under the Move brand), affiliated with Premiere Networks. It switches to Christmas music for much of November and December. Its broadcast area covers the Halifax Regional Municipality. Sister stations in the Bell Media Halifax cluster include CJCH-FM (101.3 Virgin Radio) and CJCH-DT.
History
CIOO received approval to operate in 1976 and first went on air November 1, 1977, as C100 with an adult contemporary format. It was originally owned by Toronto-based CHUM Limited until the company's buyout by CTVglobemedia in 2007, and then Bell Media in 2011.
On December 27, 2020, Bell Media rebranded 10 stations across Canada — including C100 — under the "Move Radio" umbrella, shifting them from adult contemporary to hot adult contemporary. The Halifax station became "Move 100" with the slogan "Today's Best Variety." Most shows and hosts stayed the same through the rebrand.
C100 was a Halifax heritage brand for 43 years before becoming Move 100. The station received approval to operate in 1976 and first went on the air November 1, 1977, on 100.1 FM — the calls (CIOO) resembling "100." It was originally owned by Toronto-based CHUM Limited; the company's buyout by CTVglobemedia in 2007 and then Bell Media in 2011 brought the station into the Bell fold. The studios are at the intersection of Russell and Agricola Streets, right behind sister station CJCH-DT, with the transmitter on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park (Class C, 100,000 watts, 185.1-metre HAAT).
The C100 identity was built around adult contemporary and the Christmas-music tradition — the station switched to all-Christmas music for much of November and December, a fixture of Halifax holiday listening. On December 27, 2020, Bell rebranded the station as Move 100, part of a 10-station national rollout that consolidated AC stations under the "Move" umbrella with the slogan "Today's Best Variety" (Vancouver's QM-FM, Ottawa's Majic 100, Fredericton's Capital FM, and seven others moved the same day). The format shifted from adult contemporary toward hot adult contemporary, with most shows staying in place under the rebrand. A 100,000-watt Class C signal from Clayton Park covers the Halifax Regional Municipality with room to spare.
Programming
Move 100 plays "Today's Best Variety" — hot adult contemporary hits spanning current pop and recent favorites. The station's programming includes "Mornings with Erin & Peter" (weekdays 5:30–10:00 a.m.), Sammi middays, k8 Milton afternoons, and weekend specialty shows. It flips to all-Christmas music for much of November and December, a Halifax holiday tradition.
Coverage and Audience
CIOO's 100,000-watt signal covers the Halifax Regional Municipality. The station targets adult listeners, competing with Stingray's Breeze and AC outlets, Maritime Broadcasting's stations, and streaming services.
The CHUM connection runs to the station's very birth: in the 1970s CHUM Limited launched C100-FM (C One Hundred FM) in Halifax alongside stations like CKQM-FM Peterborough, making 100.1 part of the Waters family's growing radio empire from the start. After CHUM was bought by CTVglobemedia in 2007 and Bell Media in 2011, the station became part of Bell's national AC consolidation — first the Move rebrand, then the "Today's Best Variety" positioning shared with ten sister stations.
The Christmas-music tradition remains the station's most distinctive programming move. For much of November and December, Move 100 becomes "Halifax's Christmas Music Station" — in recent years flipping at 9 a.m. on November 21 (the 2025 flip launched with Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You"), in direct seasonal competition with Stingray's CKUL-FM 96.5 The Breeze, which typically flips earlier in November. The duelling Christmas formats are a fixture of Halifax radio's holiday season, and the station's social channels lean into the countdown. As with most Canadian stations, the flips wait until after Remembrance Day on November 11.
The C100-era features explain why the station mattered to Halifax mornings for decades. The Breakfast Club was the weekday morning program (6:30–10:00 a.m., extended from 6:00–9:00): originally hosted by Kelly Latremouille — who debuted in summer 1993 replacing John Biggs — with Peter Harrison and Moya Farrell until mid-2007. Latremouille's departure in late June 2007 brought Adam Marriott in as interim host; Brad Dryden joined on August 17, 2008, as her permanent replacement; JC Douglas replaced Dryden in August 2015; and Melody Rose replaced Farrell in January 2017 after Farrell retired from the station after 35 years. In November 2020, Douglas and Rose were released by Bell Media in programming changes — and in January 2021, Erin Hopkins joined Peter Harrison on the new Move 100 Morning Show, continuing one of the longest unbroken morning lineages in Halifax radio (long before the Breakfast Club, Geoff Banks hosted mornings for most of the 1980s, then Biggs). Other C100 staples included The Top 9 at 9 — a countdown of the day's most-requested songs each weekday morning and weeknight at 9 (when it began in 1993 it was the Top 7 at 7), Retro Request Sunday with Nicolle (Sunday 8 a.m.–noon, focused on '80s music; during the mid-'90s '80s boom it ran Saturday mornings for about eight years), the Atlantic Canada Countdown with Matt & Deb (Sunday 8–10 a.m.), and — until 2007 — the radio version of the MuchMoreMusic countdown.
Today the station's syndication runs through Premiere Networks (On Air with Ryan Seacrest airs here), the morning show is podcast as "MOVE Mornings with Erin and Peter" with features like the $1000 Minute contest, and the station streams through the iHeartRadio platform. In 2022, CIOO flipped from hot AC back toward adult contemporary — completing a full circle from the AC station CHUM launched in the 1970s.
Ownership
CIOO-FM is owned and operated by Bell Media, Canada's largest commercial broadcaster. Bell acquired the station in 2011 as part of its purchase of CTVglobemedia. Earlier owners included CHUM Limited (1977–2007) and CTVglobemedia (2007–2011).
The station's iHeartRadio page hosts the on-air schedule, contests and promotions, and the Move 100.1 podcast feed, keeping the "Today's Best Variety" brand in front of listeners between broadcasts.
Digital Presence
Move 100 streams live through Bell Media's iHeartRadio Canada platform, with podcasts and show highlights available on demand. The station maintains active social media accounts promoting its hosts, contests, and events. The station is associated with the iheartradio.ca/move/halifax web portal; Wikipedia lists that URL as the station's official website.
The station's history — from the 1977 C100 launch through the CHUM, CTVglobemedia, and Bell eras to the 2020 Move rebrand — is documented by Puget Sound Radio's industry coverage and in CRTC licensing records.
