About TSN 1200 (CFGO)
TSN 1200 (CFGO)
TSN 1200 (CFGO) is Ottawa's all-sports radio station — the TSN Radio affiliate and flagship broadcaster of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. Owned by Bell Media and transmitting with 50,000 watts on 1200 kHz, the station has been the capital's sports-talk home since September 1998, when it abandoned music for sports as "OSR1200." Its history stretches back to 1964, when it signed on as CKPM, and includes a revoked licence, a Supreme Court appeal, and decades of Top 40 wars with crosstown rival CFRA.
Overview
CFGO is a commercial AM station licensed to Ottawa, Ontario, owned by Bell Media through its Bell Media Radio division. It broadcasts on 1200 kHz with 50,000 watts day and night from a six-tower transmitter array in Barrhaven, southwest Ottawa. Its studios are located at 87 George Street in downtown Ottawa's ByWard Market, in the Bell Media Building.
The station carries a sports format as the Ottawa affiliate of the TSN Radio network, with the slogan "Ottawa Sports Play Here." It is the flagship radio station of the Ottawa Senators (NHL), and also broadcasts the Ottawa Redblacks (CFL), Ottawa 67's (OHL), Atlético Ottawa (CPL), and Ottawa Blackjacks (CEBL), plus select Toronto Blue Jays and NFL games. The station is also available online via iHeartRadio and on FM through the HD Radio subchannel 100.3 CJMJ-HD2.
History
On June 7, 1964, Confederation Broadcasting signed on CKPM on 1440 AM with a middle-of-the-road format featuring popular adult music and a heavy local news commitment. In 1970, the CRTC revoked Confederation's licence, alleging the company had failed to meet its financial and management obligations. Confederation appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, which ruled in April 1971 that the company had not received a fair hearing before the Commission — a landmark case in Canadian broadcast law.
In 1972, majority interest in the station was sold to Baton Broadcasting. The station adopted its current CFGO call letters that year and moved to a Top 40 format to compete with top-rated CFRA, beginning a music rivalry that would last more than two decades.
On November 15, 1984, CFGO received CRTC approval to change frequency to 1200 kHz, keeping 50,000 watts day and night. The station moved to AM 1200 on January 5, 1986 — a nearly million-dollar project involving a new antenna system, transmitter site, and six tuning huts — significantly improving its signal across the Ottawa Valley from Pembroke to Cornwall. Rawlco Communications bought the station in 1987. Playing Starship's "We Built This City" as the inaugural song on the new frequency, Rawlco shifted the station from Top 40 to adult contemporary as "Adult Rock, Go 1200," with local actress Abby Hagyard (of "You Can't Do That on Television" fame) as morning co-host. When CFRA moved from contemporary hits to an AC/oldies mix in August 1986, CFGO reverted to all-hits within a month. On March 8, 1988, Rawlco relaunched the CHR format as "Energy 1200," downplaying the call letters; the station began broadcasting in C-QUAM AM stereo. In August 1997, the station changed its call sign to CJBZ and rebranded as "The Buzz," focusing on alternative and modern rock.
CHUM Limited acquired the station in the late 1990s, and on September 9, 1998, it flipped to all-sports — first as "OSR1200" (Ottawa Sports Radio), then as "The Team 1200," part of CHUM's national Team sports-radio network. The Team 1200 became an institution for Ottawa sports fans, with long-running shows such as the morning program "Three Guys on the Radio." CTVglobemedia acquired CHUM in 2007, and Bell Media followed in 2011. On September 30, 2013, the station was rebranded as TSN 1200, joining Bell's TSN Radio network alongside Toronto's TSN 1050 and Montreal's TSN 690.
The Team era (1998–2013) made 1200 AM Ottawa's sports-radio institution. "The Team 1200" branding, part of CHUM's national sports network, gave the station a network identity while the local shows — the long-running morning program "Three Guys on the Radio" foremost among them — built the loyal audience that sustained the format through ownership changes. When Bell rebranded the CHUM sports stations as TSN Radio on September 30, 2013, the station gained the television network's brand power: TSN 1200 alongside TSN 1050 Toronto and TSN 690 Montreal.
The Ottawa Senators flagship relationship is the station's crown jewel. In a hockey-mad market, carrying every Senators game — plus the Redblacks (CFL), 67's (OHL), Atlético Ottawa (CPL), and Blackjacks (CEBL) — makes TSN 1200 the default preset for Ottawa sports fans. The play-by-play rights are the economic engine of the sports format: game broadcasts deliver the appointment listening that talk segments alone cannot.
The 50,000-watt Barrhaven transmitter — the product of the 1986 million-dollar rebuild — gives the station one of the strongest AM signals in Eastern Ontario, covering the National Capital Region, the Ottawa Valley, and Western Quebec. The ByWard Market studios place the station in downtown Ottawa's media and entertainment district, shared with Bell's Ottawa radio and television cluster. And the iHeartRadio and TSN digital platforms extend the station well beyond the AM dial — essential in an era when younger sports fans increasingly find their teams through apps and streams rather than radio presets.
The current lineup is built around TSN Mornings with John "JR" Rodenburg, Steve Lloyd, and Matt Hamer, The Drive with AJ Jakubec, and Offside with Eric Macramalla, alongside Senators pre- and post-game shows and the RedBlacks Radio Show. The station's sports-rights history includes the Ottawa Renegades of the CFL, which named The Team 1200 its official English radio broadcaster in March 2002, with Dave Schreiber on play-by-play and former Rough Rider Jeff Avery as analyst. The 50,000-watt signal radiates from a six-tower array in Barrhaven, with studios at 87 George Street in the ByWard Market, and the station is also an affiliate of the Buffalo Bills Radio Network.
Programming
TSN 1200's weekday programming includes "TSN 1200 Mornings" (6–10 a.m.), "The Drive" with AJ Jakubec (2–6 p.m.), and "Offside with Eric Macramalla," alongside network sports-talk programming. The station's schedule blends local shows, expert analysis, and national TSN content.
Live play-by-play is the station's cornerstone: as the Senators' flagship, it broadcasts every Ottawa NHL game, plus Redblacks football, 67's junior hockey, Atlético Ottawa soccer, and Blackjacks basketball. The station's hosts are fixtures of the Ottawa sports scene, and its programming extends to podcasts and digital content through the TSN platform.
Coverage and Audience
CFGO's 50,000-watt signal from Barrhaven covers the National Capital Region, Eastern Ontario, and Western Quebec, with the directional array designed to serve the Ottawa Valley. The station targets sports fans — particularly Senators supporters — competing with streaming services and, for sports-talk listeners, with no direct commercial over-the-air rival in the market. It also streams via iHeartRadio and TSN's digital platforms.
Ownership
CFGO is owned and operated by Bell Media, Canada's largest commercial broadcaster, through its Bell Media Radio division. Bell acquired the station in 2011 as part of its purchase of CTVglobemedia. Earlier owners included Confederation Broadcasting (as CKPM, 1964–1972), Baton Broadcasting (1972–1987), Rawlco Communications (1987–early 1990s), CHUM Limited (late 1990s–2007), and CTVglobemedia (2007–2011).
Digital Presence
TSN 1200 streams live through Bell Media's iHeartRadio Canada platform and the TSN website, with podcasts of its shows available on demand. The station maintains active social media accounts, and its personalities extend the on-air conversation online. The station is associated with the tsn.ca/radio/ottawa-1200 web portal.
The station's history — from the 1964 CKPM launch through the licence-revocation saga, the frequency move, and the 1998 sports flip — is documented by the Canadian Communications Foundation's broadcasting-history.ca project and in CRTC decisions.
