About TVA

TVA

TVA is Canada's leading French-language commercial television network, owned by Groupe TVA, a publicly traded subsidiary of Quebecor Media. Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, the network operates six owned stations across the province — flagship CFTM-DT Montreal plus stations in Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, Saguenay, and Rimouski — and is available on cable nationwide, where it has long been the most-watched French-language network in the country.

Overview

TVA — short for Téléviseurs associés ("Associated Telecasters"), a name reflecting its origins as a cooperative of independent stations — is the commercial heart of French-language television in Canada. Its schedule combines Quebec-produced entertainment (variety shows, dramas, reality series, and talk) with TVA Nouvelles, one of Quebec's most-watched television news services, and major sports properties through its sister channel TVA Sports. The network's programming is produced overwhelmingly in Quebec, making it both a broadcaster and a pillar of the province's cultural industries.

The network's commercial dominance is longstanding: TVA has been the ratings leader among French-language networks for decades, regularly outdrawing its public rival Ici Radio-Canada Télé and its commercial competitor Noovo. Its prime-time schedule of Quebec star-driven variety, drama, and reality programming is a central ritual of francophone popular culture, and its news division sets the agenda for much of Quebec's political conversation.

History

TVA traces its roots to April 14, 1963, when CJPM-TV in Chicoutimi began sharing programs with CFTM-TV in Montreal, the largest privately owned francophone station in Canada; CFCM-TV in Quebec City joined the program-sharing arrangement in 1964. The informal link became a proper network on September 12, 1971, with CFTM as the flagship, and TVA launched the first private French-language network news service in Canada in 1972. Between 1973 and 1983, seven more stations joined, building a province-wide footprint.

The cooperative structure formalized over time: when the network was organized in 1971 its affiliates ran it as a cooperative — much as CTV operated — and in 1982 the cooperative became a corporation with the station owners as shareholders. Consolidation followed: in 1989 Télé-Métropole, owner of flagship CFTM and CJPM, bought out the Pathonic group, and the remaining station owners sold their outstanding shares in 1992. Quebecor became the network's owner in 2001.

The network grew into Quebec's dominant commercial broadcaster through the 1980s and 1990s, and in 1998 it became a national network, available on cable across Canada. Groupe TVA — the network's parent, controlled by Quebecor Media — expanded into specialty channels (TVA Sports, Addik, Casa, Évasion, Prise 2, Zeste, among others) and the TVA Publications magazine group, making it one of the largest French-language media groups in North America. In November 2020 the network refreshed its on-air branding with a new logo, and in 2026 TVA Sports secured a renewed 12-year French-language NHL sub-licensing agreement with Rogers, extending the network's sports footprint.

Programming

TVA's schedule is built on Quebec-produced hits: big-budget variety spectaculars, scripted dramas, reality competitions, and daily talk shows featuring the province's star system. TVA Nouvelles airs across the dayparts with flagship evening bulletins from Montreal and regional newscasts from the network's stations, and the network's public-affairs programming includes political talk and investigative magazines. Sports coverage flows through TVA Sports, the national French-language NHL rightsholder, whose games and studio programming cross-promote with the main network.

The network's entertainment slate leans on formats adapted for Quebec audiences and on original Quebec creations, with a star-driven variety tradition that has no real equivalent in English Canada. Morning and daytime schedules include talk and lifestyle programming, while weekends feature movies, sports, and family entertainment. TVA's programming strategy — overwhelmingly local, star-powered, and culturally specific — is the engine of its ratings leadership.

Coverage & Audience

TVA operates owned stations in Montreal (CFTM-DT), Quebec City (CFCM-DT), Sherbrooke (CHLT-DT), Trois-Rivières (CHEM-DT), Saguenay (CJPM-DT), and Rimouski (CFER-DT), with affiliated stations and rebroadcasters extending coverage across Quebec and into parts of New Brunswick and Ontario. Since 1998 the network has been distributed nationally on cable and satellite, serving francophone audiences across Canada.

The audience is the largest in French-language Canadian television: TVA has led Quebec's francophone prime-time ratings for decades, and its newscasts and entertainment specials routinely draw the biggest French-language audiences in the country. The network's cultural centrality in Quebec — where its stars, shows, and news anchors are household names — gives it an influence on public conversation that extends well beyond its ratings.

Ownership

TVA is owned by Groupe TVA Inc., a publicly traded company controlled by Quebecor Media, the Montreal-based telecommunications and media conglomerate. Groupe TVA's holdings include the TVA network, the TVA Sports specialty channel, a suite of French-language specialty services, TVA Films, and the TVA Publications magazine division. Quebecor's ownership ties the network to the company's Videotron cable and wireless operations, creating a vertically integrated Quebec media ecosystem. Rogers Communications holds a small minority stake in Groupe TVA.

Signature Programming

TVA's entertainment programming is the engine of its ratings leadership. The network's variety shows, reality competitions, and talk programs dominate Quebec television, and its prime-time schedule regularly captures the province's largest audiences. Star Académie — the Quebec music competition that has launched major recording careers — is among the network's signature franchises, and its seasons are cultural events in Quebec, generating the kind of province-wide conversation that few television programs anywhere achieve.

The network's scripted programming — dramas, comedies, and teleromans produced with Quebec's production community — reflects the province's distinctive television culture, in which locally produced French-language series routinely outdraw American imports. TVA's news operation, anchored by the TVA Nouvelles newscasts, competes fiercely with Radio-Canada for the province's news audience, and its public-affairs programming addresses Quebec politics and society with the intensity the province's distinct political culture demands.

TVA's morning and daytime programming — talk shows, lifestyle magazines, and service journalism — fills the schedule with Quebec-produced content, and the network's weekend programming features the variety spectaculars and specials that have been a TVA tradition since the network's early years.

Industry Context and the Quebec Television Market

TVA's position in Quebec television is without parallel in English Canada. No English-language private network approaches TVA's share of its market: the network routinely captures audiences that would be the envy of any broadcaster, and its dominance reflects both the strength of its programming and the structural characteristics of the Quebec market — where language creates a protected space for domestic production and where viewers demonstrate extraordinary loyalty to homegrown programming.

The network's competition with Radio-Canada — the public broadcaster's French network — is one of Canadian television's great rivalries, a contest between Quebecor's commercial powerhouse and the national public broadcaster for the allegiance of francophone viewers. TVA's commercial success funds the Quebec production industry at a scale that shapes the province's cultural economy: the network's commissions sustain production companies, employ performers and creators, and generate the exportable formats and concepts that travel beyond Quebec.

Within Quebecor, TVA is the flagship of a media empire that spans newspapers, magazines, digital platforms, and telecommunications. The network's integration with Quebecor's other properties — cross-promotion with Le Journal de Montréal, content sharing with digital platforms — creates synergies that reinforce its market position.

Digital Presence

TVA's digital hub is its official website (tva.ca), which offers program information, schedules, news video, and streaming access to network programming; Wikipedia's current listing gives tvaplus.ca as the network's web address, reflecting the TVA+ streaming platform branding. TVA+ provides live and on-demand streaming of the network's programming to authenticated viewers, and the network maintains extensive social media presences for TVA Nouvelles and its entertainment properties, distributing clips, headlines, and behind-the-scenes content. The network's streaming and digital strategy is closely integrated with Videotron's platforms, and TVA's shows are among the most-streamed French-language programs in Canada.
