About Antenne Brandenburg

Antenne Brandenburg

Antenne Brandenburg is the regional radio programme of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) for the state of Brandenburg. Launched in May 1990 by the GDR's Rundfunk der DDR and continued from 1 January 1992 by the Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB), it combines regional information with a popular music mix — a programme name conceived in the GDR's final spring, still on air today. Broadcasting from Potsdam, it is Brandenburg's public regional wave, with 535,000 listeners (Media-Analyse II/2026) — the rbb's strongest radio programme and one of eastern Germany's most-listened-to regional stations.

Overview

Antenne Brandenburg broadcasts from Potsdam across Brandenburg on FM, DAB+, cable, satellite, and livestream every day, from the morning news to the evening magazines. The rbb intendant is Ulrike Demmer. The station is financed through the broadcasting licence fee and radio advertising.

History

Antenne Brandenburg is one of the few East German radio programmes to survive reunification under its own name. It was launched in May 1990 — in the GDR's final months — by the Rundfunk der DDR as a regional programme for Brandenburg. When the Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg was founded on 1 January 1992 as the new public broadcaster for the state, it took over Antenne Brandenburg and continued it as the regional information station with a popular music mix.

The ORB years (1992–2003) built the station into Brandenburg's radio home: regional studios across the state, a music format balancing German and international popular music, daily news from Potsdam, and the patient work of earning a new federal state's trust — village by village, frequency by frequency. On 1 May 2003, the ORB merged with Sender Freies Berlin to form the rbb; Antenne Brandenburg continued as the rbb's Brandenburg wave, now produced from Potsdam alongside the Berlin programme rbb 88,8 — two states, two waves, one broadcaster.

The Survivor of 1990

Antenne Brandenburg's May 1990 birthdate makes it a historical curiosity: a GDR radio station founded after the Wall fell but before reunification. In the spring of 1990, the Rundfunk der DDR was democratising itself — the old centralised system breaking into regional programmes as the GDR's districts reconstituted themselves as federal states. Antenne Brandenburg was one of these transitional creations: a regional programme for the soon-to-be state of Brandenburg, launched by a broadcasting system that had months to live.

Most such transitional stations vanished in the 1991–92 reorganisations. Antenne Brandenburg survived because the ORB — founded 1 January 1992 under intendant Hansjürgen Rosenbauer — needed a regional programme and saw no reason to rename a station that already worked. The continuity is audible: a programme name conceived in the GDR's final spring still introduces Brandenburg's news in the 2020s. Few German media brands span the reunification divide so seamlessly.

Brandenburg: The Ring Around Berlin

The station serves Germany's most lopsided state: Brandenburg is the ring around Berlin — the "Speckgürtel" (bacon belt) of affluent commuter suburbs encircling the capital, surrounded by a vast rural periphery of villages, forests, lakes, and lignite mines. The commuter in Potsdam's Dutch Quarter and the farmer in the Uckermark inhabit different worlds; Antenne Brandenburg must speak to both.

The periphery's concerns dominate the regional reporting: the Lausitz's lignite phase-out and structural transformation, the Spreewald's tourism, the Oder region's Polish border dynamics, the Prignitz's agriculture, the demographic drain from the villages. The Berlin encirclement is both opportunity and threat: the capital's media market spills over, but so does its gravitational pull on the young. The station's 535,000 listeners — the rbb's best radio figure — suggest the ring holds.

The ORB Years: Building a Broadcaster

The Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg (1992–2003) was one of reunification's institutional creations: a new public broadcaster for a new state, built from the Potsdam studios of the old GDR system. Under Hansjürgen Rosenbauer — intendant from founding to the 2003 merger — the ORB launched three radio programmes (Antenne Brandenburg, Radio Brandenburg, Rockradio B), cooperated with the SFB on joint ventures (Radio B Zwei, Fritz, Inforadio), and established Brandenburg's public broadcasting identity.

The ORB's radio strategy was cooperation: rather than duplicating every format, Potsdam partnered with Berlin's SFB on youth (Fritz), information (Radio B Zwei, Inforadio), and culture (Radio 3). Antenne Brandenburg was the exception — the purely Brandenburg programme, the ORB's own voice. When the rbb merger came, this cooperative DNA persisted: the rbb's radio family is still essentially the ORB/SFB joint ventures under one roof.

The 2003 Merger: Equal Treatment

The 1 May 2003 creation of the rbb — from the 25 June 2002 state treaty — came with a constitutional clause: the broadcaster must treat Berlin and Brandenburg equally "with respect to the regional content needs". For Antenne Brandenburg, the merger meant a new parent but the same mission: the Brandenburg wave alongside Berlin's rbb 88,8, both produced under the rbb umbrella.

The equality clause is tested continuously: Berlin, with 3.7 million people and the capital's news density, naturally dominates; Brandenburg, with 2.5 million spread over a vast area, needs deliberate editorial attention. The regional studios — Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), Perleberg, Prenzlau — are the structural guarantee: newsrooms in the periphery, ensuring the Lausitz and the Uckermark are covered as thoroughly as Potsdam.

The Schlesinger Crisis

The rbb's 2022 governance crisis — the nepotism allegations against intendant Patricia Schlesinger, the public prosecutor's investigation, her resignation from the ARD and rbb leadership in August 2022 — shook the broadcaster profoundly. The interim leadership of Katrin Vernau and the election of Ulrike Demmer (announced June 2023) began the rebuilding. For Antenne Brandenburg, the crisis was distant — the Potsdam radio operations continued — but the reputational damage affected the entire broadcaster. The station's strong audience figures are part of the rbb's recovery argument: the programmes work, even when the management failed.

Programming

Antenne Brandenburg's format is regional information plus popular music: Brandenburg news, service, and magazine content framed by a broad popular-music mix of German and international titles. The regional studios — in Cottbus for the south, Frankfurt (Oder) for the east, Perleberg for the northwest, and Prenzlau for the northeast — supply reporting from across the large, sparsely populated state: from the Spreewald to the Uckermark, from the Lausitz to the Prignitz. The Cottbus studio also serves the Sorbian minority: the Sorbischer Rundfunk's Lower Sorbian programmes, produced jointly with the MDR, reach the Slavic community of the Spreewald through the rbb's frequencies.

Coverage and Audience

Antenne Brandenburg broadcasts across Brandenburg on FM, DAB+, cable, satellite, and livestream. Its 535,000 listeners (MA II/2026) make it the rbb's most-listened-to radio programme — ahead of radioeins, Fritz, and the Berlin wave — reflecting the station's deep embedding in the Flächenland, where the distances are great and the regional station is often the primary source of local news.

Ownership and Funding

Antenne Brandenburg is operated by Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, the public-law broadcaster for Berlin and Brandenburg and a member of the ARD, headquartered in Berlin and Potsdam. The programme is financed through the broadcasting licence fee and radio advertising. The rbb intendant is Ulrike Demmer, who took office after the broadcaster's 2022–2023 governance crisis.

Digital Presence

Antenne Brandenburg's online presence is integrated into the rbb's digital platforms, with livestream, programme information, podcasts, and the rbb's Brandenburg news portal. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
