About Blinker

Blinker

Blinker is a monthly German angling magazine published in Hamburg by the Jahr Top Special Verlag (Jahr Media). First issued in 1969, it is one of the long-established titles of the German fishing press, addressing all-round anglers with practical content on techniques, waters, equipment and the angling life. The magazine's editor-in-chief is Michael Werner, and its official website is blinker.de. It carries the ISSN 0720-4116. Since October 2018, the former specialist magazine ESOX — devoted to predatory-fish angling — has been integrated into Blinker, broadening the title's coverage of modern lure fishing.

Overview

Blinker appears twelve times a year and is sold at newsstands, in angling specialist shops and by subscription throughout Germany. It is part of the fishing portfolio of the Hamburg-based Jahr Top Special Verlag, one of Germany's leading special-interest publishers, whose titles also include the diving magazine Tauchen and the hunting magazine Jäger.

The magazine addresses the broad community of recreational anglers — from beginners taking their first steps at the water to experienced all-rounders. Its editorial formula combines practical instruction with entertainment: how-to features on techniques and rigs, portraits of waters at home and abroad, equipment tests, and stories from the angling life. The tone is accessible and enthusiastic, aimed at readers who fish for pleasure rather than competition. Whether the subject is a quiet morning at a local pond or an expedition to Scandinavian salmon rivers, Blinker treats every water and every angler with the same serious attention.

According to publisher figures, Blinker sells around 37,864 copies per issue. The publishing house is led by Alexandra Jahr and Ardalan Sheikholeslami as managing directors. The magazine's longevity in a competitive angling press — where it faces the Parey titles as well as numerous smaller specialist journals — testifies to the durability of its all-round formula and the loyalty of its readership.

History

Blinker was first published in 1969, in the early years of the Federal Republic's leisure society, when recreational angling was growing into a mass pastime. The magazine's name — "Blinker", the German term for a spoon lure — signalled its identity from the start: a magazine by anglers for anglers, rooted in the practicalities of the sport.

Through the following decades, Blinker established itself as a fixture of the German angling press, documenting the evolution of the sport: the rise of specialised techniques, the development of modern tackle, the growing importance of catch-and-release ethics and nature conservation, and the expansion of angling travel to waters across Europe and beyond.

A notable chapter in the magazine's recent history concerns its sister title ESOX. Launched in April 1992 as a specialist magazine for predatory-fish angling — its name the Latin genus of the pike, Germany's most popular predatory fish — ESOX was initially conceived as a sister magazine to Blinker for all-round anglers, sharing Blinker's practical section. From October 2009 it became an independent magazine devoted exclusively to modern predatory-fish angling, completing the Jahr Top Special Verlag's portfolio in the angling segment. In October 2018, ESOX was integrated into the Blinker magazine, bringing its predatory-fish expertise into the main title.

The Jahr publishing group's fishing portfolio extends beyond Blinker. The AngelWoche, a biweekly magazine for anglers and fishermen published in Hamburg by Jahr Media, has appeared since 1984 under editor-in-chief Frank Schlichting, with a sold circulation of just under 22,000 copies. Together, Blinker and AngelWoche give the Hamburg publisher coverage of both the monthly magazine and the faster biweekly news rhythm in the angling segment — a breadth few German special-interest publishers can match in a single hobby field.

Content and Programming

Blinker's content is organised around the angler's year and the angler's needs. Technique features explain methods from float fishing to lure fishing, from fly fishing to sea angling, with step-by-step guidance and rig diagrams. Water portraits introduce rivers, lakes, canals and coastal marks in Germany and abroad, with practical information on fish stocks, access, permits and seasons.

Equipment coverage includes tests and presentations of rods, reels, lines, lures and accessories, assessed for everyday usability by the editorial team. The integration of ESOX has strengthened the title's coverage of modern predatory-fish angling — soft lures, jerkbaits, vertical fishing and the specialised tackle these techniques demand.

The magazine also covers angling travel, nature and conservation topics, competitive angling, and the community life of angling clubs and associations. Reader catches, letters and photo features give the magazine a community character, while service pages provide addresses, dates and classified advertisements. Seasonal topics follow the angling year: spring predator seasons, summer holiday waters, autumn pike fishing and winter planning for the season ahead.

Blinker's journalism is written from the bankside rather than the desk. Its authors are active anglers who test the techniques they describe, and the magazine's credibility rests on this first-hand authority — readers trust advice that comes from waters they recognise, presented by writers who have stood where they stand.

Coverage and Audience

Blinker is distributed nationally throughout Germany, with its readership concentrated among recreational anglers — predominantly male, spanning all age groups from teenagers to retirees. Germany has around two million organised and unorganised anglers, and the angling press serves this large, equipment-intensive hobby community.

The magazine's audience is characterised by high engagement with the sport and substantial spending on tackle, travel and literature. For advertisers in the fishing tackle, outdoor, automotive and travel sectors, Blinker offers access to a precisely defined specialist public. The title's long history — more than five decades of continuous publication — has built exceptional reader loyalty, with many subscribers having read the magazine for years.

Ownership

Blinker is published by the Jahr Top Special Verlag (Jahr Media) in Hamburg, part of the Jahr media group. The Hamburg-based publishing house is one of Germany's leading special-interest publishers, with a portfolio spanning angling, diving, hunting and other outdoor pursuits. The managing directors are Alexandra Jahr and Ardalan Sheikholeslami.

The Jahr group's roots in special-interest publishing go back decades, and its Hamburg headquarters houses editorial teams for a range of hobby and outdoor titles. Within this structure, Blinker benefits from shared resources in production, photography and distribution while maintaining the distinct editorial voice that has characterised it since 1969.

The magazine's editor-in-chief Michael Werner leads the editorial team within the publisher's fishing division, which also produced the former ESOX title before its integration into Blinker and continues to publish the biweekly AngelWoche.

Digital Presence

The magazine's official website at blinker.de serves as its digital home, presenting current issues, angling news, technique features and community content between monthly issues. The site carries subscription offers and provides a platform for reader interaction.

Blinker is present on social media, where it shares catch photos, technique tips and issue highlights with the angling community. Digital editions of the magazine are available for screen reading. While the monthly print issue remains the title's core product — anglers traditionally value the physical magazine at the water's edge and at home — the digital channels extend its reach to younger anglers and provide timely coverage of seasons, conditions and events. With more than five decades of publication behind it, Blinker remains one of the defining voices of German recreational angling.

The website field in this profile reflects the title's official online home as listed in its Wikipedia entry. From its 1969 beginnings to the present, Blinker has accompanied German recreational angling through more than five decades of change in tackle, techniques and waters.
