About Domradio

Domradio

Domradio — officially DOMRADIO.DE — is the radio station of the Archdiocese of Cologne, broadcasting from studios directly beside Cologne Cathedral. Launched on Pentecost Sunday 2000, it was the first church-run station in Germany under the official sponsorship of a diocese, and it has since grown into a multimedia Catholic platform spanning radio, web TV, podcasts and a major news portal. Its programme combines a daytime companion service of news, culture and life guidance with live broadcasts of church services, all produced from the Domforum building at Domkloster 3, a stone's throw from the cathedral's doors.

Overview

Domradio describes its programme as built on information, inspiration and entertainment: a daytime companion service carrying news from the church and the world, politics, culture and society, alongside life guidance and counselling formats. The human person is placed at the centre of reporting on "God and the world" through reports, interviews and features. A distinctive regular element is the Saturday-evening broadcast — time-delayed — of the candlelight service from the ecumenical Taizé community. The station's name, DOMRADIO.DE, reflects the fact that its website went online a week before the radio launch in the then-young internet, making the web address part of the brand from day one. The operation is non-commercial and church-funded.

History

The Archdiocese of Cologne had been involved for years in the "Bürgerfunk" (citizens' radio) slots of local stations in North Rhine-Westphalia before pursuing its own station. The trial run came in August 1998: to mark the 750th anniversary of the laying of the cathedral's foundation stone, a two-week event radio was created, serving as the pilot for Domradio. On 11 June 2000 — Pentecost Sunday — Kölner Domradio went on air as Germany's first church station in the official sponsorship of a diocese, with domradio.de having gone live a week earlier.

Initially the station broadcast only on a Cologne FM frequency receivable in the city itself; over the years additional analogue and digital frequencies in other federal states were added. Domradio also served — and in some cases still serves — as a sustaining programme for local parishes with their own transmission facilities, mostly as web radio; among the better-known licensed examples, Studio Nahe carried Domradio together with its own local contributions on an FM transmitter from July 2007 to April 2019, before the parish expanded its own programming. Parallel to broadcasting, the station continuously built its internet activities: live transmissions of church services, expanded streaming, cooperation with partner broadcasters such as Vatican News, EWTN TV and Bibel TV, collaboration with church associations, aid agencies and the German Bishops' Conference, and ecumenical and interreligious communication.

In December 2024 the sponsorship of Domradio was transferred from the Bildungswerk der Erzdiözese Köln e.V. — the archdiocese's adult-education association — to a non-profit limited-liability company (gGmbH), giving the media operation a dedicated corporate structure. In 2025 the station marked its 25th anniversary with a thanksgiving service in Cologne Cathedral celebrated by Archbishop Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki, who recalled that Domradio had begun in 1998 as a two-week project for the cathedral pilgrimage and was now "a highly professional and widely read multimedia platform", urging church media to proclaim the Gospel courageously and independently.

Programming

The radio programme is a full daytime service: hourly information from church, politics, culture and society, magazine formats, life-help and counselling programmes, and religious content including live service broadcasts. The Saturday-evening Taizé candlelight celebration, broadcast with a time delay, is a long-standing fixture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when public services were suspended, Domradio guaranteed daily service transmissions from Cologne Cathedral via web TV — weekday and Saturday Masses and rosary prayers, Sunday Masses celebrated by Cardinal Woelki — distributed across its website, Facebook, YouTube, Bibel TV, radio and EWTN TV, and offered the stream free for embedding on any website. Beyond radio, the DOMRADIO.DE portal publishes daily video news, reports and features, maintaining audio, image and video databases and a podcast portfolio that extend the station far beyond its broadcast hours.

Coverage & Audience

Domradio broadcasts on FM in Cologne and the surrounding area (101.7 MHz), on DAB+ digital radio in southern and western North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in Berlin and Brandenburg, as a livestream on domradio.de and through its own app. The internet offering — with its reports, features, live service streaming, databases, daily video news and podcasts — reaches a national and international audience well beyond the terrestrial footprint. The station does not publish commercial audience ratings in the sources consulted; as a church-funded multimedia platform, its success is measured in reach across all channels, which Cardinal Woelki at the 25th anniversary described as that of a "widely read" platform.

Ownership

Domradio is the media outlet of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Until December 2024 it was sponsored by the Bildungswerk der Erzdiözese Köln e.V., the archdiocese's education association — itself one of North Rhine-Westphalia's largest continuing-education providers, reaching some 160,000 participants a year through Catholic education centres and family education sites. Since December 2024 the station has been operated by a dedicated non-profit GmbH. The studios and editorial offices are housed in the Domforum at Domkloster 3, the listed 1953 office building acquired by the archdiocese in 1991, which has served Cologne's church public-relations work since 1995 and Domradio since June 2000.

Digital Presence

Digital media are constitutive of Domradio's identity — the ".DE" in its name dates to the website's launch a week before the first broadcast. DOMRADIO.DE operates as a full multimedia portal: livestreamed radio, web-TV service broadcasts, daily video news, podcasts, and extensive audio, image and video databases. The station cooperates digitally with Vatican News, EWTN TV and Bibel TV, and its service streams can be embedded free of charge on external websites and shared via crossposting on Facebook. Apps and social media channels distribute the programme to mobile audiences. From a two-week event radio in 1998 to a 24/7 multimedia Catholic platform, Domradio's history is inseparable from the internet era it has inhabited since its first week on air.

From a Two-Week Project to a Multimedia Platform

DOMRADIO.DE began in 1998 as a two-week project for the Cologne cathedral pilgrimage (Domwallfahrt) — and grew into what Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, at the 25th anniversary thanksgiving service in Cologne Cathedral, called "a highly professional and widely read multimedia platform". The carrier is the Bildungswerk e. V. of the Archdiocese of Cologne; since June 2000 the station has been based at the Domforum, Domkloster 3, right next to the cathedral. The radio programme offers a daytime companion with information, inspiration and entertainment: news from church and world, politics and society. DOMRADIO.DE reports multimedia on Christian, ethical and social topics — radio, web-TV, Facebook, YouTube and the domradio.de portal.

Live from Cologne Cathedral

A cornerstone of the programme is the daily live broadcast of cathedral services: Monday to Saturday the 8 a.m. Holy Mass, the 6 p.m. rosary prayer and the 6:30 p.m. Mass; on Sundays the 10 a.m. Mass — transmitted via web-TV on DOMRADIO.DE, Facebook, YouTube, radio, EWTN.TV and Bibel.TV. The stream of the service broadcasts can be embedded free of charge on any website. DOMRADIO is heard on the internet via DOMRADIO.DE, the free "Radioplayer" app, DAB+ in NRW as well as Berlin and Brandenburg, and in Cologne on FM 101.7 MHz — the Catholic multimedia voice from the shadow of the cathedral.
