About Energy Sachsen
Energy Sachsen
Energy Sachsen is the NRJ Group's Saxon youth station — a 24-hour full programme for 14–29-year-olds produced and broadcast from Leipzig. Built in 1993 by Gerhard Pötzsch as managing partner and launched on 21 June 1993, its founding shareholders were writers, musicians (members of the pop band Die Prinzen, the manager of BAP), artists and other creatives; the French NRJ Group remains the licensor for the corporate design (name, logo). Today the shareholders are primarily the Frank Otto Medienbeteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG and the NRJ Group. Regional programmes are divided between Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau and Hoyerswerda.
Overview
Energy Sachsen is a private CHR broadcaster for Saxony under the "Hit Music Only" slogan. In its first five years the frequencies carried an urban youth radio with interactive specialist shows ("Kommunikation und Krach", "Nur Deutsch", "1000 Watt"): newcomers, hip-hop, punk, metal and current pop alternated with moderation, news, studio guests and local figures as guest hosts. Six hours daily were broadcast locally from Chemnitz, Dresden and Zwickau with their own moderators — financially too costly, and without Media-Analyse listing the ad slots were hard to sell, so shareholders gradually formatted the station as CHR: tighter rotation, regionalised local windows, re-conceived through-routed shows.
History
The station was built in 1993 by Gerhard Pötzsch as managing partner; broadcasting started on 21 June 1993 (the French infobox dates the founding to 14 January 1993). After the first Media-Analyse listing on 1 April 1998 (51,000 listeners per hour), the station chain became increasingly commercially successful. In 2000 came the "Der große Wechsel" relaunch with the morning show "Knallwach" with Freddy (6–10 a.m., running nearly ten years); the programme scheme was comprehensively changed in August 2009 and August 2012. Since 1993 non-commercial radios such as coloRadio Dresden have held fixed slots on individual frequencies.

The Creative Founders
Energy Sachsen was built in 1993 by Gerhard Pötzsch — a Leipzig writer who served as managing partner from 1992 to 2001 — and its founding shareholders were writers, musicians (including members of the pop band Die Prinzen and the manager of BAP), artists and other creatives: a station founded by Saxony's cultural scene rather than by publishers. Broadcasting started on 21 June 1993, and the French NRJ Group remains to this day the licensor for the corporate design (name, logo). The creative-shareholder model gave the station an unusual profile in the German radio market, where most private stations were publisher-owned. From Leipzig a 24-hour full programme for 14-to-29-year-olds is produced and broadcast, with regional programmes divided between Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau and Hoyerswerda.
From Urban Experiment to CHR
In its first five years the frequencies carried an urban youth radio with interactive specialist shows — "Kommunikation und Krach", "Nur Deutsch", "1000 Watt" — in which newcomers, hip-hop, punk, metal and current pop alternated with moderation, news, studio guests and local figures as guest moderators. Six hours daily were broadcast locally from Chemnitz, Dresden and Zwickau with their own moderators and shows. The concept proved financially too costly — and the absence of an Energy Sachsen listing in the Media-Analyse made ad slots hard to sell — so business considerations moved the shareholders to a gradual formatting of the station as a CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) station: tighter rotation, regionalised local windows, re-conceived through-routed shows. After the first Media-Analyse listing on 1 April 1998 (51,000 listeners per hour) the station chain became increasingly commercially successful. In 2000 came the "Der große Wechsel" relaunch, centred on the morning show "Knallwach" with Freddy (6–10 a.m., running nearly ten years); the programme scheme was comprehensively changed in August 2009 and August 2012.
Leipzig's Youth Station Today
Today's shareholders are primarily the Frank Otto Medienbeteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG and the NRJ Group. Since 1993 non-commercial radios such as coloRadio Dresden have held fixed slots on individual frequencies — a remnant of the station's alternative roots. Under the "Hit Music Only" slogan Energy Sachsen remains Saxony's NRJ youth station, produced in Leipzig for the state's young audience.
Licensed in January 1993
ENERGY Sachsen was licensed on 14 January 1993 by the Sächsische Landesanstalt für privaten Rundfunk und neue Medien for the conurbations of Leipzig/Halle, Dresden, Oberlausitz and Chemnitz/Zwickau — and went on air on 21 June 1993, one of the first private stations in the former East Germany. From Leipzig a 24-hour full programme is produced and broadcast for 14- to 29-year-olds, with regional splits for Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau and Hoyerswerda. The owner is Frank Otto Medienbeteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG; managing director Christopher Franzen, programme director Oliver Harrington. The headquarters is at Thomasgasse 2 in Leipzig's city centre. As Saxony's dedicated CHR station, it complements the state's AC-oriented privates — Hitradio RTL Sachsen, Radio PSR, R.SA — with a sharper youth focus, broadcasting in the cities where East Germany's young generation came of age after reunification.
The NRJ Brand in Saxony
The ENERGY name links the station to the French NRJ Group, founded in Paris in 1981 by Jean-Paul Baudecroux — NRJ standing for "Nouvelle Radio Jeune". What began as a single Parisian youth station became Europe's largest radio group, exporting the CHR format across the continent: tight rotations of current hits, young voices, and the "Hit Music Only" slogan. The German network spans Berlin, Hamburg, München, Nürnberg, Stuttgart, Bremen, Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. In Saxony the brand arrived early — just three years after reunification — giving the new federal state's young listeners a Western-style hit radio of their own. The Hamburg media entrepreneur Frank Otto, whose group owns the Saxon licence, is one of Germany's pioneering private-radio investors, with stakes stretching from delta radio in Kiel to 98.8 Kiss FM in Berlin.
Leipzig's Hit Factory for the East
From Thomasgasse 2 in Leipzig, ENERGY Sachsen produces a 24-hour full programme for Saxony's young listeners — with regional splits keeping Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau and Hoyerswerda each feeling served. Managing director Christopher Franzen and programme director Oliver Harrington run one of the few stations in eastern Germany still explicitly programmed for 14- to 29-year-olds. Licensed in January 1993 and on air since 21 June 1993, the station belongs to the founding generation of private radio in the new federal states — on air barely three years after reunification. In Saxony's crowded private market, where Hitradio RTL Sachsen, Radio PSR and R.SA chase the 30-plus AC audience, ENERGY Sachsen owns the youth corner: hit music only, all day, from the city that was the cradle of the 1989 Monday demonstrations to the concert halls of Dresden and the industrial cities of the south-west.
